Sherman High School’s Spirit of Sherman Marching band has a sweet treat planned for those who come to see their “Dreamer’s Dreams” half-time performances at football games this fall.

Band Director Ryan Jenkins said the show features music and themes from all three of the “Willy Wonka” movies.

Jenkins said the show will introduce the younger generations to some of the tunes from the classic version of the show and the older generation to some of the tunes from the most recent remakes.

This week, Sherman city leaders said ‘no’ to a proposed battery backup plant on the outskirts of Herman Baker Park. In a four to two vote, the council denied a request for a specific use permit that would have allowed a 45-acre plot of land adjacent to a solar farm to be developed as a battery energy storage system.

The request was initially approved by the Sherman Planning and Zoning Commission in June. However, city staff, members of the public and members of the council expressed concerns about the site, including worries about safety and if the development was the best use for the property near a major city park and Interurban Parkway.

“We started a program called The Solution,” Watt said. “It is an amazing Drug and Alcohol program that is a hybrid system of online lessons and live sessions with inmates.”

Since that time, approximately 200 inmates have participated in the program and 75 have graduated. And only one inmate rearrested for drugs or alcohol. They have even had a few people go through the system twice.

The Solution is currently be funded by the jail’s commissary fund, so it doesn’t cost taxpayers anything.

The Solution is just one part of IGNITE.

“We are unique,” Southmayd Fire Chief Brent Thetford said. “There are situations that are inherent to every volunteer fire department, namely lack of adequate personnel and capable personnel. In Southmayd we have it even worse because we are such a small community. We don’t have that many able-bodied people to pull from so a lot of our volunteers actually don’t live in the community.”

Recently, the Southmayd Fire Department announced it had a new firefighter on its squad. Jack Thomas, 18, is the newest volunteer for the department.

Denison plans to invest in staff, street repairs and design of future facilities, among other expenses, over the next year following the approval of a six-cent property tax rate increase earlier this month. On Monday night, the city council approved a budget update that reflects this change in revenues and allocated funds for new projects.

Last month, the city council proposed a 10-cent increase to the property tax rate in an effort to balance the budget amid increasing costs, inflation and other expenses related to incoming growth. City officials said it was necessary to increase taxes in order to ensure services and operations as growth continues within the city.
