Some frames + BTS from our shoot with The Gospel Coalition last month during their TGC Women’s Conference.

Like most events we shoot, this was more about the WHAT of your event than the WHO of your event. A centralized conference like this gave us the opportunity to capture almost 40 different authors, speakers, and other collaborators who are from all parts of the country and the world.

In 3 days we captured 11 podcast episodes and 20+ straight to camera pieces. Big thanks to our team who pulled off this ambitious production.

Excited to be a part of this marketing panel a week from today with Approved Mortgage!

Aside from participating, I'm just as excited to hear from these other panelists as all of them have experiences very different from my own. On a panel of marketing experts, I think its fair to say I'm just the video guy 😆 Humbled to be a part of this group!

The in person spots are gone but there is still room to sign up for virtual attendance! Sign up link is in the comments.

Here’s the deal about gear…

I don’t think any of my clients care about what new camera, lens, microphone, etc. I’m using to capture their projects. Yet that’s something we videographers, producers, technical artists, etc. care maybe a little too much about.

I know my clients care that their experience is seamless—that I’m not going to let gear get in the way of the stuff we are creating. This of course means having reliable stuff. Having tools you know well and therefore won’t hold you up. Having tools that won’t interrupt the creative flow. But it also means…

Caring more about how you can tell stories and create impact with your gear than about the gear itself.

I once heard a wise technical artist say, “we can get fixated on spec’s, when the people we serve are really more concerned about capabilities.” Many of us got into these creative fields because we fell in love with the tools and the process.

But I’m always reminding myself to be more in love with the finished product and what the tools can accomplish.

Yes… My newest lens here. Which I’m pretty stoked about because it’s a technical masterpiece of a piece of gear. But definitely more excited that it has the potential to elevate my work in some cools ways.

Kinda glad the ‘stache is gone now. Kind sad at the same time.

Can add headshots to any of the other video branding work we do together.

Or some 90s style glamour shots? Maybe? Someone? Please???

This platform wants to put you, put me, put everyone in a box.

Without boxes, how can the algorithms work? It knows which categories you and I are uniquely interested in. Which boxes to bring to us on a regular basis that will keep us scrolling, liking, commenting, over and over again.

Some boxes I fit in…

📦 Videographer: thats why I made this page and maybe why you follow me.

📦 Marketer: I didn’t attend school for this, or even held the title for more than a week. But I’ve been around this world enough to speak the language and hopefully make my videos work better for my clients.

📦 Musician: I could once boast I could play 12 or more. Piano, bass, and guitars get the most attention from me these days.

📦 Producer: easily the best catch-all word. I got acquainted with it in the radio, music, and live production worlds.

📦 Dad: one of my favorite boxes. Some build a whole platform or following around this one. That’s not what I’m here to do but it’s who I am.

📦 Foodie: cooking is one of the best ways for me to relax. I like that it’s an art form in itself and always an easy one to enjoy.

📦 Professor: more on this one later 😏 let’s just say it applies to one of the other boxes. I’ll leave most of y’all guessing for now.

Unfortunately platforms like these make it hard to express the whole person we each are. I see some do it well. But I have also noticed that these algorithms don’t seem to reward showing the whole self as well as I’d like.

If you made it this far, drop one or two of the 📦’s you fit in and why.

Looking back (this one just two months…) on Baptisms last November as I finish the recap video for tomorrow’s services.

This is the first video shot in our new facility. And while it’s nice to have all the new tools (real stage lighting, a cinema camera in the booth for great “out” shots, room mics for those great audience reactions…) the thing I’m celebrating the most is that this was the most people I’ve had to put in one recap video. The most baptisms I’ve captured in any given Sunday. Praise the Lord 🙌🏻

If what we are doing isn’t about life-change, then the tools I mentioned are just idols.

Excited for all the others we will dunk in that tank in the coming years.

It’s been a minute since I took the opportunity to introduce myself here. I’m Ethan Hardwick. Laughter is my job. Tears are my game. Law is my profession.

Nope. None of that is true. But if you’re the hardcore Office fan that I am, you completed that Michael Scott quote in your head before you finished reading it.

In the last couple weeks of my professional life I:

💥Filmed my first wedding
💥Produced a kids’ volunteer training video
💥Edited a sneak peak of that wedding (72 hour turnarounds are INTENSE)
💥Music directed & played keys at a Sunday morning service
💥Trained volunteers at another church on their new sound console
💥Started Filming a promo video package for a Newborn Photographer
💥Did final revisions on an educational course that started preproduction in February

I recently enjoyed a piece of performance art that really had me thinking about the labels we give ourselves the others around us. Algorithms reward people who niche down and aim at a narrow audience. Take on a specific label. I don’t fit one label as a creator very well, but that 👆🏻 kind of variety in my work I value immensely. I suspect your life, work, passions don’t fit one or two labels, either.

And I’ve even been dreaming about some stuff that doesn’t look like any of 👆🏻 that stuff up there, too. So…

What do you want to create next? 😏

“Can you make sure to get video of us feeding the goats?” Kelsi asked me when we had our first inquiry call.

One of the best parts of a couple’s “special day” is the fact they really can make all the details unique to represent who they are. And when your venue backs up to a pasture and you love goats, seize the opportunity ☺️

Kevin and Kelsi’s day was unique and special in so many ways beyond just this detail, and since this was my FIRST wedding as a videographer, I felt so honored to be trusted to capture it for them.

I have so much great footage of their beautiful ceremony, it was hard to pick just the highlights. But thankfully their full wedding film is coming soon (including, yes, more goats… 😆)

The heat of summer is still here, and while I already can’t wait for fall, one of my favorite weeks of the season was capturing our ministry’s summer camp.

Students from multiple Michigan and Indiana churches gathered for a collective experience at Lake Ann Camp. The week was filled with incredible worship, preaching of the word, and of course, loads of fun (is it summer camp without it?) Here were some of my favorite bits.

It’s not very often I take the time to make something just for myself, but last week we were at the family farm with Jack. I had my camera, *one* vintage lens with me, and a few simple moments outside.

I’m notorious for capturing these moments and then letting them sit on a hard drive. And I certainly didn’t have any free time when I started editing this project 😂 but it is life-giving to occasionally make things just for the sake of making them.

Got to start the day with some color work on these talking head teaching videos.

When I started doing video, what to do at this stage of post production really perplexed me. I of course started with just trying to get the best colors out of camera but never knew how to fix things in post when that didn’t work out. And not knowing how to color grade meant my stuff looked pretty blah.

I’ve come a long way, but like most things, the further you get into it, the more complex it gets 😆

For today, pleased with how these are looking.

This is a short excerpt from the video that opened our Easter services this year.

I did something for this that I haven’t done in awhile, which was to create my own music bed. In this case it ended up being a necessity since the piece synchronized with our opening song. Always fun to have a crossover project where I can use both my music and production skills.

Worth the payoff in person 💯 but unfortunately that makes it a little harder to share here.

Still, I think this excerpt gives a feel for the finished product. Even if it’s just half the story. Voiceover written and performed by who (as always) crushed it 🙌🏻

Don’t have a clever place I’ve posted the link to the full service (including how it tied in with the worship set,) but you can hunt it down if you start here: .church

I must have shot and edited a dozen event recap videos like this one in the last year or two. In fact I don’t always share them here. Working in so many different formats, these can often seem formulaic to me compared to my other projects.

But people’s unique stories are what always make these special. Some good stuff in this video 💯

Also almost completely shot this on a I’m still a Sony guy, but it’s always fun to get to work with some different tools occasionally.
