🚨Wanted Felon assaults K9 Onyx and Officer🚨
Last night Deputies were called to a residence near Asher for a welfare check. While Deputies were on scene they learned there was a male subject in the residence, Johnnie Byrd, who had active Felony warrants for his arrest out of Pottawatomie County and Ponotoc County. You might remember Byrd from two years ago, when he eluded and hit a Deputy head on during a pursuit.
Deputies waited patiently and exhausted every option to allow Byrd to come out peacefully. Byrd chose not to come out of the residence after several warnings. Eventually entry was made into the residence. Less than lethal options were utilized, but unsuccessful. During entry Byrd threw a hammer and a knife at one point at Deputies, then took hold of a speaker and speaker wire and began throwing it around with the speaker attached.
K9 Onyx was utilized to apprehend Byrd. Byrd then assaulted K9 Onyx, by hitting him with speaker wire in the snout and head. An assisting Officer was also assaulted as an attempt was made to arrest him.
Byrd was eventually taken into custody and booked into the Jail on his warrants, assault and battery on a peace officer, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police canine, resisting arrest, and obstruction. His warrant had a bond of $100,000.00 and for his new charges he received a $50,000.00 bond.
Like all arrested, this is just an arrest, not a conviction.
(Onyx and the assisting Officer are ok)
