B**g County Citizens Criticize Officials Over Wasteful Spending

Residents of B**g County have expressed outrage over what they describe as wasteful spending by county officials, following comments made at the dedication ceremony of the refurbished B**g County Superintendent's Compound.

At the ceremony held on Saturday evening, County Development Officer Sedekie Homosapien Kromah clarified that the ongoing construction of a new three-story administrative complex, valued at $300,000, is intended to house the County Administrative Officer, the County Development Officer, and the Finance Officer, along with their families.

This announcement contradicted earlier speculation that the building would serve as a guest house for high-profile visitors.
The construction is taking place adjacent to the Superintendent's residence, prompting backlash from local citizens.

Many are questioning the allocation of funds from the county's social development budget, arguing that these resources should be directed towards projects that directly benefit the community, such as scholarships for underprivileged youth.

"We don’t see any justification for using public funds to build a complex for officials who already have homes," stated one resident. "These funds should be used to improve the lives of our people, not to enhance the comforts of our leaders."

Criticism has also been aimed at Superintendent Loileyah Hawa Norris, with residents claiming her administration has been marked by wasteful expenditure. They highlighted the recent purchase of three vehicles costing $75,000 for county officials as an unnecessary drain on resources, emphasizing that the Ministry of Internal Affairs is responsible for providing official vehicles.

Concerns over the financial implications of vehicle maintenance, alongside the expensive construction project, have further fueled public discontent.

Many B**gese believe that county officials are prioritizing their personal benefits over the pressing needs of the community.

As debates continue, local residents are calling for increased transparency and accountability from their leaders, urging them to focus on initiatives that will foster real improvement in the lives of B**g County citizens.

Court Issues Injunction Against United Methodist Church Conference Amid Leadership Dispute

Gbarnga, B**g County – The Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in B**g County has issued a Preliminary Injunction against the United Methodist Church (UMC) Liberia Annual Conference, preventing its leadership from proceeding with a scheduled conference. The legal action stems from a motion filed by L. Orlando Boyce I, District Lay Leader of the St. Paul River District in Montserrado County, citing concerns over church governance and internal disputes.

Presiding over the case, Resident Circuit Judge Boima Kontoe issued an order restraining Bishop Samuel J. Quire, Jr., Administrative Assistant Rev. J. Joel Gould, and Conference Lay Leader Tolbert Nyenswah from holding the conference until further court deliberations.

The court's writ, addressed to B**g County Sheriff Perry Kennah, commands the UMC Liberia leadership to cease all conference-related activities and appear before the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court on February 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. to justify why the injunction should not be upheld.

Additionally, the court directed the respondents to submit their resistance to the motion before the February 24 hearing.

In a separate legal maneuver, the Supreme Court of Liberia, through Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay, Sr., has issued a Writ of Prohibition, effectively ordering all parties to return to the status quo ante and halting further judicial proceedings.
The Supreme Court has scheduled a conference on February 18, 2025, where all involved parties will present their arguments before Justice Gbeisay. The directive also states that UMC Liberia Annual Conference activities will continue as usual until a final ruling is made.
The dispute, which appears to stem from internal disagreements within the United Methodist Church in Liberia, underscores ongoing tensions over church governance, regionalization policies, and doctrinal differences.

AU Endorses Liberia’s Bid for UN Security Council Seat: President Boakai Vows to Champion Africa’s Interests

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Liberia’s diplomatic aspirations gained momentum at the 38th Ordinary Summit of the African Union (AU), where the continental body formally endorsed the country’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026-2027 term.

President Joseph Boakai, addressing African leaders at the summit, expressed deep gratitude for the AU’s support, pledging to advance Africa’s collective interests on the global stage.

Liberia’s Commitment to Africa’s Priorities
In his remarks, President Boakai highlighted Liberia’s historic contributions to African diplomacy and its steadfast dedication to peace, security, and sustainable development.

“We are grateful and pleased for the Union’s endorsement of Liberia’s candidacy for one of Africa’s non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council for 2026-2027. We seek your continued kind support that will allow us to serve the continent and be a voice of change, particularly on issues of peace, security, women, youth, and development,” President Boakai stated.
He emphasized Liberia’s readiness to advocate for Africa’s most pressing concerns, including:

Conflict resolution and peacebuilding
Economic development and trade expansion
Climate resilience and environmental justice
Youth and women’s empowerment
A Call for African Unity and Justice
Outlining Liberia’s agenda for the UNSC, President Boakai stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of conflict on the continent, particularly the link between resource exploitation and instability.

"Liberia’s leadership intends to champion initiatives that tackle the root causes of conflict on the continent, particularly the link between resource exploitation and instability. It is imperative that we, as African nations, unite in our pursuit of justice and reparations for the atrocities committed against our ancestors. This is not only a matter of historical justice but also a critical step toward the sustainable development and prosperity of our people," he added.
Strengthening Liberia’s Diplomatic Influence
The AU’s endorsement sets the stage for Liberia to campaign globally for the UNSC seat, alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is also vying for a non-permanent seat.

Since taking office in January 2024, President Boakai has prioritized national and international engagement, leveraging Liberia’s storied history in pan-Africanism and conflict mediation to bolster its global influence. Under his leadership, Liberia has intensified its contributions to peacekeeping missions and diplomatic mediation efforts, reflecting its commitment to fostering stability both within its borders and across the continent.

The 38th AU Summit marks a significant step in Liberia’s quest to secure a platform on the global stage, where it aims to be a strong advocate for African priorities.
