🎃 Spooky season is upon us, folks! Let's take a trip back in time to the origins of Halloween - the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced "sow-in," not "sam-hain" - so Grace doesnt "akshully" you at a party).

Samhain (literally translating to "summer's end") marked the end of harvest and the beginning of winter and the dark half of the year. (And Grant gets to wear his flannel, finally!)

The Celts believed the veil between our world and the spirit world thinned, allowing spirits and fairies to cross over. Talk about some otherworldly party crashers!

To ward off these supernatural guests, people would light bonfires, wear costumes (called "guising"), and carve creepy faces into turnips (or "neeps" if you're feeling extra Scottish). Imagine trying to fit a candle in a turnip - no wonder we switched to pumpkins!

As Christianity spread, Samhain got a makeover and became All Hallows' Eve. People would go "souling," knocking on doors for soul cakes in exchange for prayers. (It's like trick-or-treating, but with more guilt trips.)

Don't forget the traditional bannocks - oatcakes baked with a bit of magic. Single ladies would put trinkets in the dough, hoping to predict their future husbands. (Spoiler alert: It's probably not as effective as Hinge, Shelby.)

So next time you're bobbing for apples or stuffing your face with candy, remember - you're participating in a tradition older than your great-great-great-grandma's ghost! 👻
