Speaking during the Guadalupe County Commissioners regular meeting, Sheriff Joshua Ray expressed his intention to discontinue his office’s operation of the county animal shelter at the beginning of the next fiscal year.

On Thursday, Ray clarified his statements and offered a fuller accounting of his intentions and some of the rationale behind them. Providing animal services — such as corralling estray livestock, conducting animal cruelty investigations, performing rabies control authority duties and providing animal-related public safety — statutorily fall under the sheriff’s purview. So, those operations will continue, Ray said.

Running an animal shelter is a different story, he said. “We will still continue to try to provide the same level of services in relation to our statutory responsibility,” Ray said. “I have no intention of separating from our animal control officers. The enforcement aspect of what we do needs to stay with the sheriff’s office.”

Amid growing budgetary concerns and other considerations, the Guadalupe County sheriff on Tuesday let county leaders and residents know of his future plans for the local animal shelter.

The city of Seguin has seen more than its fair share of wrecks on Interstate 10 in the past three months.

Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 30, the city’s police and fire departments responded to 69 wrecks on Interstate 10, of which 63 occurred in the construction zone, Seguin Police Chief Jason Brady said Tuesday during Seguin City Council’s regular meeting.

Brady, along with city staff and police department personnel, met with representatives from TxDOT and Webber Construction to find solutions to reduce the number of collisions in the stretch of I-10 that runs through Seguin.
