🔥 November 14, 2024 Pile Burn Update 🔥

📌 Missoula Ranger District: Fire managers plan to burn up to 7 acres of hand piles on the Granite Graves project located at the junction of Granite Graves Creek and Highway 12. Smoke may be visible from Highway 12.

📌 Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District: Fire managers may burn up to 30 acres 11 miles west of Thompson Falls. Smoke may be visible from Highway 471.

📌 Seeley Lake Ranger District:
The Seeley Ranger District will conduct up to 60 acres of hand pile burning located 5 miles northwest of Seeley. Smoke may be visible from Highway 83 and Seeley Lake.

📌 Superior Ranger District:
Pile burning operations are planned for the Johnson Camp landing piles located 5 miles northeast of Superior in the Johnson Creek drainage. Smoke may be visible from Superior.

🔥 November 12, 2024 Pile Burn Update 🔥
Pending favorable conditions, firefighters on the Lolo National Forest are planning to conduct pile burn operations today to reduce hazardous fuels from previous vegetation management operations.

📌 Missoula Ranger District:
Firefighters plan to burn 3 acres of machine piles located in the Grizzly Campground up the Ranch Creek drainage. Fire managers may also burn up to 57 acres of hand piles on the Granite Graves project, located 4 miles up the Howard Creek drainage. Smoke may be visible from Highway 12.

📌 Ninemile Ranger District:
Firefighters plan to conduct pile burn operations on the 41-acre Frenchtown Face project located approximately 4.5 miles east of the Ranger District in the Sixmile drainage. Smoke will likely be seen from Frenchtown and the surrounding area.

📌 Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District:
Pile burning is planned for the Knowles and Henry Deemer project areas. Fire managers may burn up to 30 acres of hand piles east of Paradise and 40 acres of landing piles 3 miles northwest of Paradise. Smoke may be visible from Paradise, Knowles, Quinns, Highway 200 and Highway 135.

🔥 November 5, 2024 Pile Burn Update 🔥
Lolo NF fire and fuels staff completed 207 acres of pile burning yesterday across many of our districts, work will continue today and throughout the rest of this week, as conditions allow.

📌 Missoula Ranger District: Firefighters will continue pile burning up to 60 acres, 3.5 miles northwest of Lolo Hot Springs .5 miles south of Wagon Mountain and Howard Creek junction. Smoke may be visible from Highway 12.

📌 Ninemile Ranger District: The district plans to burn up to 24 acres of piles located in the Cromwell Creek drainage 3 miles west of District Office. Smoke may be visible from the Ninemile Valley, Alberton and Interstate 90.

📌 Superior Ranger District:
The Superior Ranger District will continue pile burning on the Hall Wood project area located 5 miles north of Superior. The district also plans to pile burn on the West End project located southwest of Haugan. Smoke may be visible from Superior and Interstate 90.

📌 Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District:
District personnel plan to conduct up to 60 acres of pile burning on two different project areas located in the Prospect Creek drainage and 11 miles west of Thompson Falls. Smoke may be visible from Highway 200 and Camas Prairie.

📌 Seeley Lake Ranger District:
Firefighters will conduct up to 50 acres of pile burning on the Westside Bypass Project area located 4 miles northwest of Seeley Lake. Smoke may be visible from Seeley Lake and Highway 83.

🔥 November 1, 2024 Pile Burn Update 🔥

📌 Missoula Ranger District: Firefighters will continue pile burning up to 40 acres, 3.5 miles northwest of Lolo Hot Springs off Forest Road 33 at the junction of Wagon Mountain Road and Howard Creek Road. Smoke may be visible from Highway 12 and Lolo Hot Springs.

📌 Superior Ranger District:
The Superior Ranger District will also continue pile burning 10 miles southwest of Superior near Lost Meadows. Fire managers will burn up to 10 acres of landing piles. The piles are a result from previous management operations on the Lost Creek Timber Sale. Smoke may be visible from Superior.

Updates from the Seeley Lake Ranger District:

🔥 Pile burning started near the Ranger District Office and other burning locations include the Westside Bypass area and some piles in the Morrell and Monture horse pastures.

🌲 The last vegetation harvest project in the Westside Bypass area will happen soon. This includes getting rid of hazard trees near recreation residences, secret beach and Riverpoint Campground.

🗒️ Forest planning following the Lolo National Forest plan revision continues and will pick up visibility again in the new year.

✅ Work completed this summer: West Fork Bridge replaced, Deer Creek Bridge under contract to be replaced, Seeley Lake Campround under contract for improvements, more timely road maintenance.

Pile burning today in the Lolo National Forest.

🔥 October 29, 2024 Pile Burn Update 🔥
Pile burning efforts will continue today across the Lolo National Forest to reduce hazardous fuels from previous vegetation management operations.

📌 Seeley Lake Ranger District: Firefighters will conduct up to 2 acres of pile burning on the Morrell Falls project area located 8 miles north of Seeley Lake. Smoke may be visible from Seeley Lake and Highway 83.

📌 Plains/Thompson Falls Ranger District: Firefighters will burn up to 38 acres of piles located 3 miles north of Plains, and 11 miles west of Thompson Falls. Smoke may be visible from Plains, Thompson Falls, and Highway 200.

Fuel moisture, wind, temperature, and ventilation for smoke are all considered before beginning a pile burn. Smoke and flames are often visible and are a normal part of slash pile burning operations. Snow helps contain the piles and firefighters monitor the area during and after the burn.

Once ignited, piles are monitored by firefighters until declared out. Piles may smolder, burn, and produce smoke for several days after ignition. While smoke may linger in the area, removing these large accumulations of woody debris minimizes fire danger.

The Nevada Lake Fire is a prescribed burn that got away, burning at 207 acres eight miles east of Helmville and half a mile north of Nevada Lake.
