Synopsis:
Carlo Pittore, an exuberant, larger-than-life figurative artist and activist is discussed by a small group of friends and fellow artists who founded the Union of Maine Visual Artists in 1975 and gathered at a late afternoon al fresco picnic to assess Carlo’s impact. He died in 2005 at the age of 62. Says art author Edgar Beem, “The conversation is so casual and honest it’s almost as though Carlo had just stepped away from the table for a moment rather than for all eternity.” His advice to young artists to strike out, follow their dreams, and “Do It” was palpable… as was the love for him and the hurt he sometimes caused. Memories and perspectives clash. Carlo painted n**e models while singing and dancing to Verdi’s opera at his Academy of Carlo Pittore creating works often compared to Lucian Freud and Alice Neel. Fearing the AIDS epidemic he fled New York in the late 80s. Jonathan Katz, a founding figure in q***r art history, said he didn’t think Carlo’s interest in female n**es was a cover for his homosexuality. He found them beautiful. The film captures Carlo's ambition for artistic greatness, his infectious personality, his struggle with sexual identity, and complicated legacy.

Homelessness Film Premieres Saturday June 29 4-6pm w/ a panel including Speaker Rachel Talbot Ross, Cullen Ryan, Tracey Hair, Dr. Katie Spencer White, and James Raines, moderated by Melody Lewis-Kane https://wix.to/IegKCZq
at the UU Congregation of Castine, 86 Court Street

Synopsis: BUILDING HOPE gives us hope that there is and end to the suffering of homelessness if there is the will to make this happen. The stories are complex and hard to bear: the lack of affordable housing; substance use disorder; anxiety and depression; despair and lack of self esteem; domestic abuse; trauma; poverty; encampments; prison time; lost loved ones; brutal weather. How can this happen in “the richest country in the world?” This long U.S. reputation has brought throngs of asylum seekers escaping the fear of cartels and dictators, yearning to be free, hoping for a better life. This is what BUILDING HOPE is about even though it’s hard to even think that there is hope. But there is. We can all make a difference. The event is free. RSVP to [email protected]
