Congratulations to O'Dea High School on their fifth WIAA 3A state championship win!

The school held an assembly to celebrate the team and its state title, the program’s first since 2017. In attendance were students, faculty and staff, alumni, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and the Archdiocese of Seattle’s Superintendent for Catholic Schools Nicholas Ford, as well as Mick Hoffman and Andy Barnes, executive director and assistant executive director of WIAA.

O’Dea's victory over Bellevue not only meant the school won its fifth state championship, but that head coach Monte Kohler tied a notable state record.

A 15-foot icon of Christ the Teacher began greeting visitors to St. Nicholas Catholic Parish in Gig Harbor late October.

The icon, written by Giorgina Wells, is mounted on the church’s bell tower facing the street, visible to anyone passing by. Patrick Sharkey, director of operations at St. Nicholas, said this was the plan Father Mark Guzman had when he asked Wells to create the icon four months prior.

After a spectacular evening reopening ceremony Dec. 7, the cathedral was illuminated by daylight this time, when the procession of 170 bishops entered Notre Dame Sunday morning, followed by more than 100 banner bearers representing all of Paris’ parishes, and seven priest representatives of the various Eastern Catholic churches.

Rain and the “City of Lights” locked down due to high profile guests did not stop the crowds from arriving to Notre Dame Cathedral for its inaugural Mass.

"As the light of the Advent wreath, or the light of breaking dawn, the world awaits the charity of believers. Let us once again bask in the Light of Christ, who is our Light and Salvation (Psalm 27). As Christ illumines our darkness and frees us from gloom, he also sends us in his name to be the same light to lovingly lift others who are struggling, that what seemed improbable in the time of Isaiah may be a reality for others today."

Advent heightens our awareness of fresh new possibilities still hidden within the Reality and Mystery of God.

Nearly 170 bishops from France and around the world will participate in the celebration, along with one priest from each of the 106 parishes in the Archdiocese of Paris, and one priest from each of the seven Eastern Catholic churches, accompanied by faithful from these communities.

On Dec. 8, the second Sunday of Advent, the inaugural Mass, with the consecration of the high altar, will take place at 10:30 a.m., presided over by Archbishop Ulrich with President Macron attending.

Five years after Parisians lined the streets, wiping tears as Notre Dame Cathedral burned, the faithful will have their jewel back as it reopens.

In today's Advent reflection, Archbishop Etienne encourages and reminds us of "the importance of seeking to prayerfully know God’s will in each of your lives. To do this we need prayer, silence, sacraments – especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation – and God’s Word. We need Jesus Christ, and to be intimate in our relationship with the Lord, profoundly sensitive to the inspirations and promptings of the Holy Spirit in our life."

How often do we stop to reflect if my life is in accordance with God’s will? After all, we pray each day in the Lord’s Prayer “your will be done.”

Msgr. Gray told OSV News there are “three reasons” for renewed interest in Archbishop Sheen’s canonization, which has been evidenced by a surge in visits to his tomb, requests for both relics and for his more than 50 books, and reports of favors and graces received through Archbishop Sheen’s intercession.

Despite a few delays in recent years, the canonization of Venerable Fulton J. Sheen is “inevitable,” said the head of the foundation supporting his cause.

The St. Andrew Christmas Novena is not your typical nine-day novena. This short, beautiful meditation, also called the Christmas Anticipation Prayer, is traditionally recited 15 times a day from Nov. 30 — the feast of St. Andrew — through Christmas Eve.

For families, try praying it together once a day, maybe after lighting the Advent wreath or as part of your prayers before dinner.

After decades of dreaming, more than 10 years of fundraising and countless prayers, the members of Vietnamese Martyrs Parish joyfully celebrated the dedication of their new church Nov. 24.

Gathered at the foot of the 23 steps leading to the church entry, parishioners cheered, whooped and applauded when their pastor, Father Thanh X. Dao, received the keys from Archbishop Paul D. Etienne for the ceremonial opening of the church doors.

Concelebrating the dedication Mass with Archbishop Etienne were Archbishop Joseph Nguyen Chi Linh of Hue, Vietnam (Father Dao’s hometown); Benedictine Abbot Marion Q. Nguyen of Saint Martin’s Abbey in Lacey; and more than a dozen priests.

“Local churches and groupings of churches are now called upon to implement, in different contexts, the authoritative indications contained in the document, through the processes of discernment and decision-making provided by law and by the document itself,” he wrote nearly a month after the synod’s close.

Approved by the pope, the synod’s final document “participates in the ordinary magisterium of the successor of Peter.\"
