This is Osaka Castle, most of you know it as a major tourist attraction, known for its beautiful park, museum, and panoramic views of Osaka city.

It stands as a symbol of Osaka's rich history and architectural prowess, drawing millions of visitors each year to admire its imposing stone walls and iconic five-story main tower.

But did you know that this picturesque landmark was once the site of one of Japan's most pivotal and bloody conflicts?

In 1614, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, launched a massive assault on Osaka Castle, then held by Toyotomi Hideyori, son of the late ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in what would become known as the Winter Campaign of the Siege of Osaka.

The siege began on November 19, 1614, when Tokugawa's forces, numbering around 200,000 men, surrounded the castle and its defending army of approximately 100,000.

Tokugawa's army employed a variety of siege weapons, including arquebuses, cannons, and mining techniques to weaken the castle's formidable defenses, while the defenders under generals like Sanada Yukimura and Gotō Matabei fought fiercely to repel the attacks.

Despite the Toyotomi forces' valiant efforts, by December 22, 1614, Tokugawa had breached the outer defenses and forced Hideyori to negotiate for peace.

A truce was negotiated, with Hideyori agreeing to fill in the castle's outer moats and dismantle some fortifications, but this proved to be merely a temporary respite.

On May 8, 1615, hostilities resumed in what is known as the Summer Campaign, with Tokugawa's forces, now bolstered to nearly 250,000 men, launching a final assault on the weakened castle.

The decisive Battle of Tennōji on June 3, 1615, saw the complete defeat of the Toyotomi forces, with key commanders like Sanada Yukimura falling in combat.

In the aftermath, on June 4, 1615, Hideyori and his mother, Yodo-dono, committed su***de as Tokugawa's forces stormed the castle's keep.

This marked the end of the Toyotomi clan and solidified Tokugawa Ieyasu's control over all of Japan, ushering in the 250-year period of peace and isolation known as the Edo period.
