SKYLAB is on the Portland Interior Design Tour on SEPT 21. Come check it out!

The complex where they now work was updated in the mid-1940s. It consists of two prefabricated steel warehouse buildings connected by an enclosed walkway. The buildings have arching roof forms, and the easternmost structure features a 60-foot skylight, which allows sunlight to enter the work areas. Skylab and PDX Contemporary Art share this 10,000-square-foot space, which includes a kitchen, dining room, listening lounge, 3D print space, and workspaces with an industrial aesthetic. To create a welcoming environment, natural elements like cross-laminated timber, wood cabinetry, and four 15-foot-tall trees have been incorporated into the design.

The Portland Interior Design Tour is produced by GRAY magazine and Modern Architecture + Design Society, and sponsored by Marvin.

The great room was opened up to create a larger living space with custom built-ins and a plaster fireplace. The second story was reworked for added storage and another bathroom featuring beautiful plasterwork. A large sliding door and refinished den now opens up to a landscaped backyard with a patio and sauna.

CRAFT at Maison&Objet: Ceramic artist Malin Ida Eriksson was selected for the Rising Talent Craft Award. An expression of her experience of the passage of time, she fills dried and unfired clay with ink-colored water, which seeps out onto white paper. She uses these abstract images to inform her sculptures in black or white enamel. (images 1 and 2)

Blacksmith Benoit Wintz uses ancient forging techniques on wrought iron in a technically challenging way to highlight the elegance and softness of the material. (images 3 and 4)

iNFLUENCE: While conceptual installations draw crowds and conversations, the enduring power of design can also take a more subtle approach. Universo Satellite, an exhibition at Salone del Mobile earlier this year (conceived by design world celebrity Marva Griffin Wilshire, curated by historian Beppe Finessi and designed by Ricardo Press Bello Dias) proved a testament to Salone’s enduring influence on international furniture design. Read more about Carla's take on the experience on our website.

We've rounded up our top picks of new products and presentations from Milan Design Week, including Faye Toogood’s Rude Collection (shown) -- celebrating female energy, womanhood, and s*x through abstracted fleshy forms and blood-red blob designs.

Ennio Fazioli, founder of MIM (Mobili Italiani Moderni), shares his archive of images that capture the iconic Italian furniture brand’s rich cultural history.

Designer Andee Hess of OSMOSE discusses the JM House, a Tutor-contemporary in Portland's West Hills that will be featured in the Portland Interior Design Tour on Sept. 12.

PODCAST: Brandon sits down with Jeffrey Ramirez, brand designer and partner at the New York-based GRAY award-winning firm The Up Studio. They talk about simplifying the design process, the critical role of branding in effective communication, the advantages of transparency in pricing, and much more!

In the spotlight: Seattle based firm Workshop AD.

We're ready to book!

This gorgeous desert retreat, with interiors by stylist and designer Sydney Ballesteros, is vacation-ready, just 10 minutes outside of Pioneertown, near the majestic Joshua Tree National Park.

Ballesteros, a Tucson native whose work is deeply inspired by her multi-generational Sonoran desert roots and Mexican-American heritage, worked to honor the heritage of the adobe house, layering it with rich colors and textures, filling in the rooms with a mix of vintage and bespoke furniture and art.

Located near Joshua Tree National Park, the Bust'n B Ranch is a tranquil high desert escape with sophisticated Southwestern charm. The interiors of this one-story adobe house near California's Pioneertown were renovated to capture the beauty of the surrounding landscape and honor the history of adob...

GRAY and Modern Architecture + Design Society are headed to the Washington D.C. metro area to for an interior design tour on April 6, and you're invited to join us!

We're looking forward to walking through these inspiring homes IRL, meeting the designers in person, seeing the materials and décor they are using, and getting fresh ideas.

The lineup includes:

A rare opportunity to step inside the iconic, midcentury modern Four Pavilions house, originally designed in 1975 by Hugh Newell Jacobsen, FAIA. Jim Luigs Designs refreshed the interiors and Richard William Architects won a national RADA award for its latest restoration and renovation. Photo: courtesy ListModern.

A 700-sq.-ft. short-term rental. DIH Designs reimagined a small space into a 2 bd, 2 bath residence with clever solutions for maximal living spaces and concealed storage. Photo: Abisade Adepoju.

A house designed by Valeria design Studio is situated on land where the art patron, educator, civil rights activist, and philanthropist Peggy Cooper Cafritz once lived. Features lighting as art by designers HENGE, Tom Dixon, Artemide, and more.

A historic Georgetown row house by Lisa & Leroy. Its maximalist décor captivates a modern eclectic aesthetic. The renovated, modestly-sized home is now a functional, inviting space designed for entertaining and living comfortably. Photographed by Jenn Verrier.

A sleek and cozy open-concept home by EL Studio. For its energetic young family, the location of this former Craftsman bungalow was right, the size was right, but the house as it was, was all wrong. Now, it has a better layout, more storage, and plenty of room for gathering. Photographed by Anice Hoachlander.

An interior led by the homeowners' love for Santa Fe Dancing Kokopellis. This house designed by inner loop design features colorful wallcoverings made of natural fibers, interesting tile, and a custom walnut fireplace surround. Photo: inner loop design.

Thank you to all participanting designers and to for sponsoring.
