In April of this year, Isla Animals Rescue was evicted from their shelter space by the government of Isla Mujeres, leaving the rescue organization homeless like the abandoned animals they’ve worked so diligently to protect since 2001.

At the time of their eviction, Isla Animals had already adopted out more 100 dogs, performed more than 500 sterilizations and rescued more than 180 dogs from the streets (and some kitties too!) since the beginning of 2023.

In spite of the unthinkable setback, founder Alison Sawyer and the organization’s director, Trina Noakes, remained steadfast in their commitment to taking animals off the streets. They were blessed with a piece of property that they could use as a temporary location; they made plans to build a brand new shelter in Cancun with exactly the features and facilities needed (called Isla Animals Oasis); and they broke ground on Oasis in June.

The sooner Oasis is built, the sooner Isla Animals can get back to saving more animals in crisis. But they are in critical need of the public’s help.

Ballet Hispánico, the nation’s largest Latinx dance organization and one of America’s Cultural Treasures, is thrilled to announce its exciting lineup of performances and events in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). This year’s robust roster of entertaining and engaging programming, including will delight audiences and communities in the United States and Canada. Additionally, Ballet Hispánico will host Celebración Latina, this year’s community event in NYC.

Community Celebration. This year’s community celebration, Celebración Latina, will take place on Sunday, October 15, from 1:00pm-5:00pm. Family members of all ages are invited to join the celebration on Ballet Hispánico Way at West 89th Street from Amsterdam Avenue to the front door of Ballet Hispánico’s headquarters for live music, dancing and food from local vendors on the street and, inside the headquarters, for performances by the professional Company and students from the School of Dance, free dance classes and so much more!

Diálogos. Ballet Hispánico's signature conversation series, exploring the interconnections of the arts, social justice, and Latinx cultures, returns with Stonewall Diálogos: Creating Safe Spaces celebrating LGBTQIA+ Latinx heritage. This annual event will take place on Tue, 9/19 at the Stonewall Inn, 53 Christopher Street 5:30pm.

Congratulations are in order to my friend and Tennis press colleague for being featured in newspaper today. Nico has covered tournaments since 2006 & continues strong!

Nico continued covering the US Open as press and attended daily matches from 2006 -2019 without missing a day. The pandemic happened and he was then credentialed virtually for a couple of years. Myself, Nico and among other Tennis press reporters were back in NYC last summer to cover the US Open yet again. Nico was the one to stay thru the end of each match till the wee hours of the morning to interview winners.

Unless you are a press member attending the US Open, one will not understand how you would feel when you are selected to ask a question to a tennis contender and/or winner. Since there is limited time, only a few journalists are given the opportunity to ask questions, perseverance, determination and focus made Nico stand out especially this past year to be given that opportunity multiple times during the 2022 US Open.

Fans enjoyed another epic day of tennis in Rock Creek Park yesterday featuring a dramatic mix of sparkling victories and unexpected losses on Day 2 of main-round competition at the 2022 Citi Open.

While top seeds Andrey Rublev, Emma Raducanu, Victoria Azarenka, and 2019 Citi Open champion Nick Kyrgios breezed through their matches on Tuesday without losing a set, 2015 Citi Open champ Sloane Stephens, 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, 2021 Citi Open finalist MaKenzie McDonald, 2021 Citi Open semifinalist Jenson Brooksby, former World No. 7 David Goffin, and recent Wimbledon semifinalist Tatjana Maria felt the sting of stunning first-round upsets.

Kyrgios felt similar emotions after his opening singles loss at the 2021 Citi Open, a fact he pointed out in his post-match press conference Tuesday night.
