Are you a mentor? Do you have a mentor?

Andi Lucas here, 👋 yes and yes are the answers for me. 💜

Back in the early 2000s, I edited a colleague’s book called “The Mentoring Mosaic.” Upon doing so, I realized I’d never had a real mentor before. I decided then to challenge myself to become the mentor I never had.

I wholeheartedly believe in mentoring my team.

At Hummingbird Marketing Services, I lead weekly 1:1 and full-team meetings to provide individual support and unity in our efforts. Both settings create space for professional development and team bonding. Being a mentor to Julia and Elizabeth (shown here) is an equally rewarding experience as they challenge me and teach me more about myself.

This past fall, we launched our first Learning Internship Program to hone emerging talent with critical industry experience, giving Julia and Elizabeth the chance to be mentors themselves. Through this program, we’ve maintained a business culture of mutual appreciation and respect where all team members feel valued. Thank you to Angelinna and Maddy for being such creative, driven, and fabulous interns!

I also believe in mentoring other business owners, especially those just starting out.

To that end, I work with Business Impact NW — a non-profit organization helping small businesses start and grow. I offer mentoring, webinars, consulting, and more to their clients regarding all things marketing.

Through this partnership that started in 2017, I’m able to meet and mentor so many new business owners throughout the Pacific Northwest. There’s nothing like seeing someone grow and thrive through a mentorship — and you create a lifelong relationship with that person.

Finally, I am a mentee.

Since starting Hummingbird Marketing Services, I have had the pleasure of working with three different business coaches — currently, Coach Dave Erland, who I also see as a mentor. The success of my business today is, in many ways, a testament to that mentorship and coaching. In addition, I seek mentorship from other business owners who inspire me.

Today is International Mentoring Day. 🙌🏻 I encourage you to start a mentorship practice in your life and your business. Whether for yourself, for your staff, or for your community, mentorship cultivates growth and new perspectives.

Andi Lucas Andi Lucas is the founder and owner of Hummingbird Marketing Services. She has more than 25 years of professional writing and editing experience as well as almost 15 years of digital marketing and web development experience. Originally from Ohio, Andi graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Arts in News Journalism. She has worked for consumer and trade magazines across the country—from Stonington, Maine, and Richmond, Va., to Boston and Los Angeles. Andi moved to Seattle in 2007 and worked in digital marketing and traffic management at Amazon.com until launching Hummingbird Marketing Services in 2015.

Nici Lucas Nici Lucas is the Marketing Director of Hummingbird Marketing Services and has more than 25 years of business operations, marketing, writing, and management experience. She graduated from Case Western Reserve with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and spent 17 years working for Diebold Inc. Being both left- and right-brained, Nici combines business operations and management experience with her creative side in the areas of photography, social media, branding, and creative writing. Based in our Cleveland headquarters, Nici can help grow your business by creating a new marketing and branding plan or strategizing to enhance your current marketing tactics.
