Manuela Czernatowicz is an inventive User Experience (UX) Designer Manager from Prague, Czech Republic who researches, designs, and analyzes data to improve our digital products. Manuela’s most fulfilling parts of being at Accolade are getting to work with genuine people, connecting with women in our Women Empowering Women Employee Resource Group (WEW ERG), developing software, and making Accolade’s member experience as seamless as possible.

Growing up, you could always find Manuela creating something: painting, assembling glass pieces, and hand-dying fabrics called batik. Her love of creation combined with her study of psychology led her to discovering UX.

In her first internship as a UX Designer, Manuela strengthened her skills in writing, researching, and building mockups, but she emphasizes her most important skill learned was networking, collaborating, and problem-solving with diverse groups of people.

There are so many people Manuela is inspired by to be her best self every day at Accolade. She is grateful for her UX team members who are always willing to help and give a good laugh. “They exemplify how much you can achieve through hard work, but I also call them friends, and amazingly we are all working towards the same goals.”

Manuela also points to the Women Empowering Women ERG, “It takes a village to achieve anything. To be able to find women who are willing to help other women, give support when needed, and have access to amazing mentors within the WEW ERG is something I am proud of.” Manuela shared that much of what contributed to her success is the support of her team, ERG, and mentors throughout her time at Accolade.

Manuela’s advice to other young professionals is: “Do not be afraid to connect with people. Find people who drive you to be your best self and challenge you in the best ways possible.”

Halley Thaxton (she/her), a Digital First Response Supervisor from Apache Junction, Arizona, ensures her team has the resources they need to succeed. She is also the Treasurer for our Women Empowering Women Employee Resource Group (ERG).

Halley understands the challenges of advocating for one's health. She endured a 12-year journey of endometriosis and adenomyosis. Her struggle began with excruciating menstrual cycles that caused vomiting. Her parents took her to a doctor, and they found a small ovarian cyst. The doctor prescribed birth control, but her symptoms persisted.

After the birth of her first child, Halley returned to the ER due to pain. Doctors initially misdiagnosed her with appendicitis. Post-surgery, the surgeon informed her that her appendix was fine, but her uterus appeared boggy. Her gynecologist dismissed her, suggesting pregnancy as a solution. Furious, Halley never returned.

Fortunately, Halley finally met a doctor who believed her and her symptoms. After years of searching, an ultrasound confirmed she had adenomyosis, where endometrial tissue grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. Surgeons removed endometriosis adhesions and performed a hysterectomy, the standard treatment for adenomyosis. This supportive doctor transformed her life, demonstrating the difference compassion can make.

“In many ways, I became disillusioned with healthcare. I had to fight to make doctors believe in my pain. When I met my last doctor, he immediately believed me. I was so shocked, I cried.”

Today, Halley helps Accolade members prepare for their medical appointments, ensuring they ask the right questions and find new providers if dissatisfied with their care. “I find purpose in ensuring our members know we will believe them and advocate for the care they need.”

Melani Facundo, a social media manager from San Francisco, CA, connects with our members and community on Facebook. She builds community online, and here at Accolade as a member of our Asian Pacific and Friends Employee Resource Group. Melani is committed to creating an environment for others to learn while integrating Accolade’s core values.

"As a second-generation Asian American, being part of the Asian Pacific and Friends was a way for me to better understand and explore my cultural identity along with those of my peers. Additionally, growing up, I didn’t see much Asian representation in the media and leadership positions so, being part of a group that advocates for and supports that representation inspires my personal growth”.

Melani's curiosity is her driving force. In elementary school, she loved puzzles and finding ways to think creatively, earning her the nickname 'The Detective'. Her curiosity and outlook on life propelled her towards her passions.

Straight out of university, Melani joined The Pill Club, a pioneering women’s health startup specializing in patient support. With a desire to do more for patients and a passion for creativity, Melani was given the opportunity to produce content for the company’s social channels eventually building their online presence to over 100K followers, spearheading brand partnerships.

Melani's curiosity continues to thrive at Accolade. After discovering her passion for creative environments, she completed courses in digital marketing to strengthen her foundations, obtained a certificate in Visual Design from the General Assembly, and took various other classes to bolster her content creation and creative skillsets.

“There is always an opportunity to expand on my curiosities here at Accolade! From working cross-functionally with different teams, to coffee chats and learning from leaders – I know I can explore my interests, learn about others and their work, and know I am supported every step of the way.”

Melani finds fulfillment in her role by trying new ideas and not being afraid to try again. “I look at social media like one blank canvas you can always add to and iterate on. I try to look for those moments where I can display the creative part of my brain so that I can connect with our members in that safe little pocket of the Internet we have created. My advice: Always stay curious and be as empathetic as possible.”

Nancy Costlow (she/her) is a senior director of clinical shared services from Scottsdale, AZ who leads our team of nurses, social workers, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other clinicians. 🌵

Nancy is a part of our Women Empowering Women Employee Resource Group and is constantly inspired by the amazing women who work at Accolade.

From a young age, Nancy's father's work in his Chicago pharmacy inspired her. She observed how her father supported people and recognized the impact pharmacists have on others' lives. "Pharmacists play a crucial role in healthcare, often serving as the final point of contact for patients before they commence a new treatment. We are truly on the front lines, which is extremely powerful," Nancy said.

Nancy will never forget her experience working at an overnight pharmacy when a woman came in seeking burn cream. The woman shared with Nancy that the previous night she had accidentally spilled boiling water on her leg while cooking. Upon hearing this, Nancy asked to see the woman’s burn, which she revealed on her leg, immediately noticing it was turning black.

Realizing she might be this woman’s only contact with a healthcare provider, a concerned Nancy urged the woman to go to the emergency room. Although the woman initially brushed Nancy off and started to leave, Nancy noticed she was accompanied by her husband and baby. Nancy pulled the woman’s husband aside and adamantly instructed him to take her to the emergency room immediately. Nancy even offered to watch their baby because she was so determined to ensure the woman received the necessary care. Just a few hours later, he returned in the morning to thank Nancy for saving his wife’s life. The woman had been admitted to a burn unit and was receiving treatment for her severe burn.

This is just one moment of many that comprise the most rewarding aspect of Nancy’s role. Every day, she witnesses the impact she makes, whether financial, emotional, or physical.

“I love being able to use my skills to help others. As a pharmacist, I learned specific medication information and how to use it to assist others. As a leader, I use those experiences to provide my teammates with a unique perspective. Through my leadership and experience, I can impact both the members and teammates I serve.”

“I call diabetes the silent killer,” Marjorie Johnson, United employee.

Marjorie initially reached out to Accolade to help manage her diabetes medication and doctors appointments. That’s when her Care Advocate introduced Marjorie to an Accolade partner that provides life changing type-2 diabetes reversal and weight loss expertise: Virta Health.

Marjorie thought her diabetes diagnosis would control and limit the rest of her life, but with the support of her Accolade Care Team partnered with Virta Health, Marjorie is well on her way to living her healthiest life.
