Member Stories: Helping a member advocate for her own well-being
Getting discharged doesn't always leave patients with a sense of relief. Instead, it can present a new set of challenges, such as adapting to new routines and medications. Without the right support, many people find themselves back in the hospital due to infection, stress-related incidents, or adverse drug events. To give people the help they need, Accolade’s intelligent technology empowers our team to proactively support members after they leave the hospital.
When a member was discharged after her hospitalization for a gastrointestinal bleed, our internal system went to work. It notified one of our nurses, who reached out to the member about her hospitalization, discharge, and ongoing symptoms. We listened to her concerns, helped her get in to see her primary care provider, and offered post-visit guidance. When her symptoms persisted, we helped her schedule a re-evaluation, connect with a pulmonologist, and find answers to her questions. We also worked with her to obtain a portable oxygen device and request work accommodations, so she could get back to working and living.
“Having a conversation with us and helping us help you with your provider is the best way to get the care that you know you deserve,” said Accolade solutions consultant, LaNara Scruggs.

Member Stories: Bilingual support helps close a gap in post-discharge recovery
Discharge from a hospital stay is a critical point in healthcare that Accolade routinely helps members navigate. From scheduling follow-up appointments to starting new medications to finding durable equipment, there are many elements of the hand-off from the hospital care team that can prove confusing or daunting for patients. Language barriers can further complicate post-discharge recovery, widening gaps in recovery care that lead to preventable hospital readmissions.
Accolade addresses these challenges by offering bilingual support to our members and their families, ensuring nothing gets lost in translation. Just ask our nurse, Sara Ludwig, who has firsthand experience of how our bilingual support can make all the difference. Member Stories: Guiding a member through maternity complications
Inadequate prenatal care significantly raises the risk of maternal mortality, neonatal death, low-birth weight, and health complications. Accolade is committed to providing quality physicians and ensuring healthy outcomes. That’s why, when a member who was due in 10 weeks—and hadn’t seen her physician in three months—reached out to us, we leapt into action.
We helped her schedule a next-day OB appointment and eventually switch to midwifery care. With trust built, the member reached out again when she tested positive for COVID and had to be admitted to the hospital. Our team was able to offer guidance as the member coped with her emergency c-section, COVID recovery, baby’s NICU stay, and postpartum care.
“This is what we do here; facilitating an open and caring environment for the members to be empowered to take charge of their own healthcare,” said Tara Bogan, Accolade registered nurse.

Member Stories: Helping a member resolve a denied treatment claim
Nearly 25% of people taking prescription drugs have difficulty with the cost of their medication. Being unable to afford prescriptions can affect adherence and overall health. So, when a 49-year-old member who’d been diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis (MS) had her treatment claims denied, the Accolade team went to work for her.
Ten months into treatment, despite prior approval, the member couldn’t get her long-term medication authorized. Our specialized claims and benefit team contacted the health plan to find the problem. This led to an appeal, which helped the member get the care she needed and saved her tens of thousands of dollars.
“By simply making that first phone call, this member was able to impact all of her future healthcare needs,” said Cathy Shorn, Accolade steward.
