Ethiopia – February 2025 – Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Djibouti’s long-serving Foreign Minister, has been elected as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) after a closely contested election at the 38th Ordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa. His victory, secured with 33 votes in the final round, marks a significant diplomatic achievement for Djibouti and signals a new chapter in the AU’s leadership

Human Rights Under Siege: How security forces in Oromia fuel terror, fear to control residents through lawlessness.

In mid-January 2025, Human Rights Watch (HRW) published its overview of the human rights situation in Ethiopia for 2024. The report stated that human rights continue to be violated, pointing to extrajudicial killings, unlawful imprisonments, arbitrary arrests, attacks on civilians, and restrictions on freedoms of expression. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) moreover reported that Ethiopia is among the worst jailers of journalists in Africa. The Freedom House ranked Ethiopia as “not free” in 2023, and the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index for 2024 ranked Ethiopia at 134th place (of 142 countries).

These reports are, unfortunately, similar to those issued over the last years and read like “business as usual” in Ethiopia. This is, I argue, not the case. I believe that the human rights situation is not only significantly worse, but also that the reasons, motivations, and nature of human rights violations are new and quite unprecedented. Yet again, the international community ignores what is going on and is without much hesitation supporting the sitting Abiy Ahmed government and its copious projects on urban beautification

2025 Second Annual Garre Conference in Nairobi, Kenya . The event pooled together delegates from Kenya 🇰🇪, Somalia 🇸🇴, Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and chad 🇹🇩

The idea of fostering unity and collaboration across borders is crucial, especially in a time when communities worldwide are increasingly interconnected. It seems like this conference provided a meaningful platform for sharing stories, building solidarity, and advancing collective progress.

The Garre community truly embodies the power of cultural preservation and adaptation. Despite being spread across multiple countries, their shared identity and strong sense of belonging across borders is a testament to the depth of their heritage and resilience. It’s fascinating that in Chad, they are known as Tub and Goran, showing how they’ve managed to blend into different societies while maintaining their roots.

The Chadian delegation's presentation must have been incredibly impactful, showcasing the Garre community's resilience and commitment to both cultural preservation and national development. It’s inspiring to see how communities can maintain their identity while playing a significant role in the broader social and economic fabric of their countries.

9 million Ethiopian children have been forced out of school.
More than nine million Ethiopian children are currently out of school. They are caught in the crossfire of armed conflicts, natural disasters, tribal tensions and economic hardships.

In 2023, Ethiopia had a total school-aged population of 35,444,482 children, about 52% of them primary school-aged. In the same year, only 22,949,597 children were enrolled in schools, leaving over 35% of school-aged children out of school. In the past year, the ongoing humanitarian crisis has worsened the situation, forcing even more children out of school.

Armed conflict erupted in 2020 between the federal government and Tigray regional government. The crisis was compounded by armed resistance to the government in the two largest regional states, Amhara and Oromia. There are also ongoing conflicts between the pastoralist communities of the Afar and Somali regions.

The numbers tell the story. As of November 2024, around 10,000 schools were damaged and over 6,000 schools were closed due to conflict, violence and natural disasters. The worst hit regions are Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, Somali and Afar.

The 32nd anniversary of the founding of the Somali Regional State in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 is being celebrated.

As this day commemorates when the people of the Somali Regional State acquired a unique flag, administration, defined boundaries, a constitution, a parliament, their own government, and gained constitutional rights to self-governance.

It is worth recalling that on August 21, 2023, the Executive Council of the Somali Regional State approved the commemoration proclamation marking the Somali Regional State Day to be celebrated annually on January 23rd, the date when the first parliament of the Somali Regional State convened and elected the first president of the region.

The government seems to be relentless in deepening the social crisis in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. In the latest string of what appears to be politically motivated action against public servants, Addis Ababa City Administration terminated over 400 City Bus Service employees.
A BBC Amharic report published on Wednesday indicates that the employees are terminated as of January this year.
Government did terminate the employees on alleged grounds of “assignment and reassignment” to positions in the structure.
The Anbessa Bus service that served the city for over 70 years was merged with Sheger Bus (which was established recently) about two years ago under the guise of “better service delivery.”
Employees say the number of employees terminated is 480. However, the bus service says the number is only 382. However, it is clear that thousands of families will be negatively impacted given the unbearable cost of living in the capital city.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali administration has been deepening neoliberal practices over the past few years in addition to taking measures allegedly motivated by the organization of the city administration.
Employees who served for over 10 years including cleaning staff and guards are among those terminated. Some of them are near their retirement age. Some of the employees terminated have reportedly a university education in addition to experience.
The termination of the employees is rationalized as part of a “reform process” – according to a BBC Amharic report. However, employees accuse the city administration of terminating them arbitrarily and unfairly.
The government fired hundreds of city employees who served for decades about a year or so ago. The action was framed as a form of promoting “efficiency” in the city administration.

Ethiopia announced that it will collaborate with a new African Union force against Islamist Al-Shabaab insurgents in Somalia, which is set to deploy later this month.
Somalia had previously indicated that Ethiopian troops would not participate due to strained relations between the Horn of Africa countries after landlocked Ethiopia signed a maritime agreement with the breakaway region of Somaliland to gain access to the coast. But after months of wrangling, the two neighbors last month agreed to a detente in a deal brokered by Turkey. Eddy Micah Jr. talks to Somalia's
