Community sends troops off to Cuba with gifts and food

Many volunteers from community organizations from Cypress and Los Alamitos banded together to honor and send off the 11th Military Police HHC unit, which departed May 29 from the Joint Forces Training Base for a mission at the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp in Cuba. Also the USO was on hand to provide deployment swag bags for each service member. This detention center still holds 40 of the most notorious suspected terrorists which are still be held by the United States. Major Daniel Alix said their mission will be to rebuild the security infrastructure surrounding the facility. In the video, Art Garcia, the owner of Maderas Steak and Rib in Los Alamitos, serves up “spicy or regular” mac and cheese to go with their Kiwanis hamburgers and hot dogs as the grateful service members enjoyed a meal before they boarded the flight out. Los Al Griffin girls score a 1-0 victory at Newport Harbor

Los Alamitos’ Griffin soccer girls made clear their dominance of the Sunset League in a 1-0 victory recently over Newport Harbor. Paige Thompson got the goal on this 25th minute corner kick and Los Al improved their season’s record to 16-0-3. Griffins coach Pat Rossi said the victory was sweet. Click to watch the winning goal.
