Get into the holiday spirit with The Giving Issue. 🎁

Inspired by Telfair Museums’ new exhibit “Norman Rockwell & Peers: Illustrating Childhood,” on display through January, we reimagined holiday celebrations in their iconic style — with a Savannah twist — at the Printmaker's Inn. Plus, tour a Victorian home dressed in holiday finery; step inside a stylish snow globe filled with a wonderland of this season’s coolest gifts; and learn about the history of Watch Night Services – a New Year’s Eve tradition in the Gullah Geechee corridor – from renowned storyteller Lillian Grant-Baptiste.

ALSO IN THIS ISSUE: Auspicious Baking Company rises into a Whitemarsh empire; Greg Parker (Parker's) fuels positive community change; Sorry Charlie's Oyster Bar dives into oyster farming; local medical professionals discuss the importance of gut health; and our annual guides to gifting, nonprofit giving and retirement.

It’s all in the November/December 2024 issue of Savannah Magazine, now available on newsstands and at shopsavannahmagazine.com.

Husband and wife team Ashely and Deborah McCorkle conceived Southern Crafted as a love letter to their region. Featuring the works of the area’s preeminent creatives hailing from the Lowcountry to the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, the Bull Street shop offers handsome, hand-turned knives and bowls, metalworks and remarkable glassware meant for gifting and everyday acts of Southern hospitality.

So it’s not surprising the couple sprang into action when they heard about Hurricane Helene’s destruction of Asheville and the nearby Penland School of Craft. Southern Crafted is pledging 10% of their glassware sales through the end of the year to initiatives for rebuilding the famed River Arts District.

“Western North Carolina and the Appalachians are the heart of handmade craftsmanship, including furniture. It's where it all began in the U.S.,” Ashley says. “We want to help them out in any way we can, and they are really going to need it when the news cycle has turned over to something else. They will still be rebuilding far beyond November and December.”

When Melissa and Mike Pereyo, co-founders of apparel brand OOBE, set out to craft their ideal vacation home in Palmetto Bluff, the Greenville, South Carolina, couple dreamed of a private oasis with marshland views to serve as their family’s summer getaway.

One lot overlooking Cauley’s Creek offered the scenery they were looking for in spades, though the space was tightly bound on either side by neighboring homes. Seeking help to design a modern home that maximized the view without sacrificing privacy, the Pereyos turned to Tom and Leighann Markalunas of Markalunas Architecture Group and Leighann Markalunas Design. Few companies survive long enough to make it to 50 years, let alone 100. One Savannah-based business, however, has beaten the odds and is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year — and showing no signs of slowing down.

Byrd Cookie Company, led by fourth-gen owner Stephanie Lindley, has baked its way from a local gem to a national cookie powerhouse. Cranking out over two billion cookies a year, they run four bakeries and 26 shops across the Southeast, including seven right here in Savannah. With elite partnerships like Delta Air Lines and Disney, Byrd Cookie Company is on a mission to make the world a little sweeter, one cookie at a time. “All a house is, is bricks and mortar, and then it’s what you do to it,” says Lynn Rahn, whose name has become eponymous with interiors, home staging and her Mall Boulevard store, Clutter Furnishings and Interiors. For the uninitiated, Clutter is a vintage furniture consignment shop full of treasures and unexpected finds hand-selected by Rahn and her daughter, Brooke Chancey.

So when Rahn received a call from a real-estate agent asking her to take a look at the furniture in a new listing in The Landings, it wasn’t the furniture that caught her eye, but the bricks and mortar surrounding it. The designer and her husband, Jimmy, purchased the house and began a top-to-bottom renovation that – unbelievably – didn’t require making any changes to the existing layout. Take a walk inside the reinvented 1980s patio home filled with Rahn’s signature maximalist style: savannahmagazine.com/homes/lynn-rahn-updates-her-1980s-patio-home/

If you’re in the mood to go dancing under a disco ball, there’s only one place that stands out: Das Box

Located at 1006 E. Broad St., just four blocks from Forsyth Park, this bar-club-restaurant-pool hall, opened in October 2023, has quickly become a local favorite. It's known for its regular DJ lineup featuring Savannah staples like Basik Lee and Maggie Hayes, also known as Miss Paradise.

“Our tagline is ‘Contain yourself,’ but we want the opposite,” says the bar’s proprietor, D.H. Bathon. “We want you to be who you are inside Das Box. Das Box is what you make of it, and who is inside of it.” It's no surprise Das Box earned the title of ‘Best New Bar’ in our Best of Savannah 2024 reader-voted poll. Daniel Harthausen has fit a lot into his 29 years. The self-taught Korean American chef (who recently learned he’s also one-third Japanese thanks to 23andMe) spent eight years in the Richmond, Virginia, bar and restaurant scene, where he started his much-lauded pop-up, Young Mother. Soon after, he charmed and cooked his way up to the rung of celebrity, winning Dan Levy’s HBO Max cooking competition, “The Big Brunch” in 2022.

A year after securing the funding needed to start his own restaurant, Harthausen decided he didn’t want to be tied to a brick-and-mortar just yet. He still had more to explore. Along the way, he met Colin Breland — who owns Late Air Wine Bar, 2024 Runner-Up Best Wine Bar and Best Wine List, with his wife, Madeline Ott — at a natural wine fair. When Harthausen later saw their job post for a new chef, he came to Savannah on a lark but quickly realized the corner of Bull Street and Victory Drive is where he was meant to be. Get a taste of the heritage, humor and ambitions chef Daniel Harthausen brings to Late Air by reading more: savannahmagazine.com/taste/chef-qa-late-airs-daniel-harthausen
