This is an isolated, hard-to-reach patch of red Navajo sandstone hidden within the desert expanse of Vermillion Cliffs. The unique formations that rise and swirl are covered in a grey rocky layer that makes the entire landscape look as if it was covered with icing. In some spots, the stone layers are completely twisted just like an enormous marble cake 🍰

This extraordinary geology is not easily explained even in the present day. Some geologists hypothesize it is a result of "soft sediment deformation" meaning the contortions occurred back in the Jurassic period when the sand was saturated and not solid rock yet.

To this day though, experts are still trying to figure out just how the Earth created this beautiful work of art. We are in awe just walking among this treasure

We took a day trip outside Las Vegas to visit the area known as Nelson. Originally called Eldorado in 1775, by the Spaniards who made the original discoveries of gold in the area that is now Eldorado Canyon. The town was the site of one of the first major gold strikes in Nevada and one of the biggest mining booms in state history. Gold and silver were discovered here around 1859. The rush to the canyon began in 1861, several mining camps were established in the canyon, and a steamboat landed at the mouth of the canyon on the Colorado River, called Colorado City. Disagreements over ownership, management and labor disputes resulted in killings so frequent as to be routine & ordinary. Despite the sinister reputation of the mine, it along with others in the town produced several million dollars in gold, silver, copper and lead. The mines in the canyon were active from about 1858 until 1945.
