Tim Goedken is passing Lango Dairy to his daughters: twins, Sarah and Tara, and their younger sister, Courtney.

“They’ve always been involved and had their responsibilities on the farm, so I hoped that one day maybe one of them would come back,” Tim said. “My first thought when they wanted to come back (was that) I was relieved.”

For Monica Evers, the Winona State University December 2024 student commencement speaker, her address was all about the biggest life lesson she has learned as a dairy farmer: gratitude.

Evers is the daughter of Jerry and Tammy Evers. She is part of Evers Dairy, which milks around 2,600 cows near Kellogg, Minnesota.

After two years of planning and construction, the West Branch project of Novilla RNG LLC has two renewable natural gas digesters in operation and is now injecting RNG into the lines of Sioux Center, Iowa.

The digesters receive manure from four dairy farms. The first is Maassen dairy, operated by Aaron Maassen and partners, Adam, Stefan and Lee Maassen, near Maurice. The other three sites are operated by the Hoogland family.

The Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association awarded the Wisconsin Outstanding Holstein Boy and Girl to Evan Hathaway of Barneveld and Ainsley Noble of Lancaster.

“Being a member of the (Wisconsin) Junior Holstein Association has taught me that you can dream big, but you have to work hard to make those dreams become a reality,” Noble said.

For Garret and Alicia Miller, juggling dual roles is an everyday reality that brings both sacrifice and reward.

At Garret’s full-time job, he spends mornings and afternoons in Wisconsin working as a milk inspector for the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. At his second job, he spends weekends and weekday early mornings and evenings working on his family’s dairy farm near Kellogg, Minnesota.

“It’s always been my lifestyle,” Garret said. “I’m not the type to sit around and let grass grow under my feet. … The reward (is) in the end, seeing the crops grow, harvesting the crops, and … raising the calves.”

Garret and Amber Duske along with their kids — Emmit, Hazel, Colton and Charlotte — have focused on making their farm more efficient so they have more time to give back to the community and be with family.

“You could constantly stay busy for 16 hours a day seven days a week,” Garret Duske said. “I don’t see enjoyment in that. I didn’t get married and have kids to not be able to see them.”

In 1926, a young country schoolteacher from Spring Grove started as a herdsman at Boulder Bridge farm in Excelsior. The farm was owned by the George “Nelson” Dayton family who established Dayton’s department store in Minneapolis, which eventually became Target Brands Inc.

That young teacher was the late Olaf Kjome, a future recipient of the prestigious Klussendorf Trophy and a future five-time Gold Star Guernsey breeder.

Heidi Heller has always enjoyed baking and bringing a smile to the faces of friends and family. She has turned that passion into a fledgling business, Lucky Charms Cheesecakes, to continue to spread joy.

Heller grew up on her family’s dairy farm near Cecil, Wisconsin. Although her family’s herd left several years ago, she continues to maintain a small herd of registered Brown Swiss, which she breeds under the Lucky Charms prefix.

With their back to critical habitat and surrounded by about 100 houses in a mile radius, the Reuters knew that expanding their dairy farm was not an option. Today the Reuters milk their herd with two Lely Astronaut A5 robotic milking units that they started using May 4, 2021.

“We can’t really grow in size, so you have to make that up in efficiency and production,” Phil Reuter said.
