Ray Sands started dairy farming in 1948 at the age of 17 upon high school graduation. He retired from milking cows in 2008 at the age of 77. Throughout his life he also played in a band called The Polka Dots from the age of 18 until age 91.

Holsteins found a home inside the barn of the Heiar farm in the early 1920s. Now, more than a century later, Tom Heiar is continuing the family tradition of milking cows. Heiar is the fifth generation on the family farm, recently taking over for his father, Mark Heiar.

It was Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin that suggested cheese be a key ingredient in the recipe found in the Christmas-themed movie, “A Cherry Pie Christmas,” that debuted this fall. Produced in partnership with DFW, the movie was filmed entirely in Door County.
