Contemporary & Classy: Downtown Sarasota.

While our area is flooded because of Hurricane Debby, I wanted to cheer you up with a new article about sunny Sarasota. Today's focus is on the contemporary architecture of Sarasota's downtown and a few of my favorite spots to eat and shop. This is my personal experience; I call it "dating the city," and I always strive to find something unique and sophisticated. Ok, let's go.

I want to highlight two contemporary design buildings that stand out downtown.

Starting a downtown adventure is easy with convenient parking options. Our relatively small downtown area is very walkable. Although we have a few choices of convenient parking, my favorite is the Palm Avenue garage, known for its central location and ample space to hang out. Located at 1289 N Palm Ave, this garage was designed by Jonathan Parks Architect and awarded for its design. It features a striking facade inspired by the wind-filled sails of a ship, reflecting Sarasota's connection with the sea. The design allows natural light and ventilation, making it a pleasant and safe environment. Moreover, the garage is LEED-CS Gold certified, incorporating eco-friendly features such as solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations.

One of my favorite features is the open-top roof parking on the 6th floor, which offers a stunning view of downtown Sarasota and the bay. It's a popular spot for photoshoots, capturing the beauty of the cityscape. The garage is conveniently located close to the Opera House and some of the best restaurants in Sarasota, making it an ideal starting point for a day or evening out in the city. Two notable spots nearby are Buddy Brew Coffee, perfect for a quality coffee break, and Kojo, an Asian-inspired dining experience known for its classy interior and excellent service.

Moving further, another contemporary building I love to visit is The Mark, located at 111 S Pineapple Ave. Completed in 2019, this mixed-use development designed by Hoyt Architects features 157 luxury condominiums, 35,000 square feet of retail space, and 15,000 square feet of office space.

The Mark stands out for its modernist architecture, characterized by clean lines, expansive glass windows, and open floor plans that create a sense of space and light. The exterior of The Mark is sleek and contemporary, with a bright white facade that contrasts beautifully with the blue skies of Sarasota. The design includes large terraces with glass railings, providing residents with stunning panoramic city views. The ground floor houses upscale dining and shopping options, making it a lively hanging spot. Its central location on South Pineapple Avenue puts it in the heart of the downtown action, close to cultural landmarks and making it an attractive place to visit and explore.

If you love to read paper books like me, welcome to Bookstore 1. It is a beautiful space with a fantastic choice of books and helpful staff, creating a pleasant experience. I enjoy spending time at bookstores and libraries, which are quality and chill spots.

Almost next door, opposite Bookstore 1, is the exquisite North Star Fine Jewelry & Gift Boutique. With elegant interiors, unique design jewelry, original artwork sourced from local artists, and luxury gifts, this boutique is a treasure. The owner and founder of the boutique is one of my favorite women in our city. Almost next door, opposite Bookstore 1, is the exquisite North Star Fine Jewelry & Gift Boutique. Sarasota's downtown is a contemporary treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered. The next time you visit, carve out some time to explore this vibrant area.

Marguerite Barnett, the co-founder of the famous Siesta Key Drum Circle, is a woman with beauty and a strong personality who keeps the balance between being a surgeon and a dancer.
One of the most interesting life stories I ever heard.

I connected with Marguerite because I wanted to write about the famous Siesta Key Drum Circle, where she is one of the founders, knowing nothing about her incredible life path. So, I decided to write a separate article about this beautiful soul. In her early 70s, Marguerite defies age with her vibrant spirit and impressive achievements. Her journey, from an accomplished medical career to her passionate engagement with dance, is a testament to her resilience and dedication.

My first education was in architecture, so I'm always curious about old houses' history and design elements. Living in the historic Laurel Park district, I'm inspired to highlight our unique, charming neighborhood where each house and garden tells a story, creating an open-air museum of Sarasota's heritage.

There are few original buildings left in downtown Sarasota. Today, I wanted to discuss our neighborhood's history and drop a few pictures here.

Laurel Park was founded in the 1920s, and the neighborhood saw most of its growth from 1920 to 1927. Two hundred seventy of its buildings contribute to its status as a historic district, with 20 of those buildings designated as historic sites by the City of Sarasota. Narrow sidewalks and classic, cozy architecture make the neighborhood feel welcoming and friendly, with a small-town, suburban feel.

Although the majority of the buildings in the historic district can be classified as Frame and Masonry Vernacular, the community also has distinctive examples of the Mission Revival, Mediterranean Revival, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow-style residences.

Also, a few houses were described as Craftsman Bungalow style and were associated with construction during the Florida Land Boom of the 1920s. One of them is located on Oak Street. It was constructed more than a hundred years ago by Amish craftsmen at their community in Sarasota and then assembled at the plot where it's now located.

This same style of charming house can be found at John and Mary Erbs Home, built in 1925, on Ohio Place, a street within Laurel Park.

I love to walk in our district, explore my neighborhood, and discover new architectural details. Observing the old trees and plants that add character to the area is fascinating. I feel compelled to document these original structures and aged trees before they are overshadowed by new construction.

I couldn't have written about Denise Kowal.

Most Sarasota residents know the Burns Square Historic District in downtown Sarasota and Denise Kowal, the owner of the most spectacular building in the square.

Kowal is also a luminous figure within the kaleidoscope of Sarasota's artistic community and the founder of the famous Chalk Festival.

https://chalkfestival.org Check it out. It will be held this year from November 8 to 10, 2024, and will be absolutely fantastic, with many international artists involved.

The Siesta Key Drum Circle: Rhythm of Joy.I have intended to write about the Siesta Key Drum Circle for quite some time....

The Siesta Key Drum Circle: Rhythm of Joy.

I have intended to write about the Siesta Key Drum Circle for quite some time. This event holds a unique and special place in my heart, as it brings back vivid memories of my time in Goa, India. In an artistic global community, we gathered for a drum circle every sunset. The Siesta Key Drum Circle evokes those cherished moments of adventure and connection, resonating with me profoundly.

On a hot summer day, June 9th to be precise, as the sun descended over Siesta Key, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I made my way to the beach, guided by the distant, mesmerizing sound of drums. I had heard much about the legendary Siesta Key Drum Circle and was eager to experience this unique event firsthand. The rhythmic beats grew louder with each step, pulling me closer to a gathering that promised vibrant energy and unforgettable vibes.

Arriving at the beach, I was immediately struck by the sight before me. A small group of dancers, already lost in the rhythm, moved gracefully in the sand, their movements setting the stage for what was to come. Within an hour, the circle expanded, filled with people of all ages and backgrounds, all drawn together by the irresistible pull of the drums. The atmosphere was electric, a blend of pure joy and high vibration that could only be felt, not adequately described.

The origins of the Siesta Key Drum Circle date back to the early 1990s when David Gittens, an intriguing figure with a rich past, started the first entire moon drumming event. David, an African American who once thrived as a renowned fashion photographer in the 1970s, had an epiphany one day. Tired of the excesses and superficiality of his life, he abandoned his career and sought solace in the East Indian islands. There, he reinvented himself, eventually returning to Sarasota, where he became a mediator in the family court system and discovered West African drumming.

David's first drum circle was a modest affair, held at Beach Access 8, where a dozen drummers and dancers gathered around a small fire. The gatherings grew in popularity, necessitating a move to a more prominent location to accommodate the ever-increasing number of participants. Today, the Siesta Key Drum Circle is a weekly ritual, drawing hundreds of people every Sunday to celebrate the rhythms of life.

One of the most captivating figures at the drum circle is Dr. Marguerite Barnett, a Harvard-trained, double-board certified cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon. Marguerite’s life is a tapestry of remarkable achievements and passions. Born in Japan and adopted by a fundamentalist Chaplain in the U.S. Army, she grew up on military bases around the world. Her parents disapproved of her love for dance, but she pursued it nonetheless, using belly dancing to fund her medical studies at Harvard. I met Marguerite a few days before the event when she told me about her exciting life path, her story I highlighted in another article.

Marguerite’s connection to dance is deep and varied. She has mastered many forms, from belly dance and classical Indian Bharatanatyam to Sufi dances to Flamenco and fire dance. At the Siesta Key Drum Circle, she performs with her husband, Shawn Bowen, a multi-instrumental musician and photographer. Their shared love for music and dance anchors the drum circle, although they emphasize that it is a communal, leaderless entity.

The drum circle itself is a vibrant symphony of sound and movement. Drummers create a hypnotic rhythm with African djembes, didgeridoos, and acoustical zithers. At the center, a glowing LED ball, surrounded by a wreath of flowers and fern leaves, marks the focal point where dancers orbit like planets around the sun. The energy is infectious, a unique blend of joy and lightness that lifts the spirit and frees the soul.

As the evening progressed, more and more people joined the circle, moving to the beat, their faces illuminated by smiles and the warm glow of the setting sun. Children twirled sticks, a young woman skillfully maneuvered a hula hoop, and a belly dancer unfurled long ribbons of silk. Amidst this joyous chaos, Marguerite, often balancing a scimitar on her head, distributed flowers from her garden to drummers, dancers, and onlookers, fostering a sense of connection and community.

The Siesta Key Drum Circle is more than a weekly event; it is a communal heartbeat that unites people from all walks of life. It reminds us of the importance of letting go of our daily routines and reconnecting with the simple, profound joy of being alive. It’s where you can rediscover the inner child within you, dancing freely under the moonlit sky, swept up in the pure energy that flows through this magical gathering.

Whether you’re a local or a tourist, the Siesta Key Drum Circle offers an unparalleled experience of rhythm, community, and joy. It’s a celebration of life in its purest form, where the beats of the drums and the dancers’ movements create an unforgettable symphony of human connection. So, if you find yourself in Siesta Key on a Sunday evening, follow the sound of the drums and let the high vibrations sweep you away.

Sarasota's All-In-One Hangout Spot.

Today, I’m sharing a hidden gem I recently discovered near Sarasota Bradenton International Airport: Amuse 5 Bakery. This place perfectly blends charm, creativity, and great food, making it an instant favorite of mine.

Amuse 5 is the creation of Claudia Diaz, a chef with a true bohemian spirit. Inspired by her travels to Europe, Claudia designed this vibrant café with a French flair—think golden-framed mirrors, crystal chandeliers, and plush velvet upholstery. It’s a feast for the eyes and the soul.

There’s an interesting story behind the name “Amuse 5.” Claudia was inspired by the French concept of “Amuse Bouche,” which means "amuse your mouth." The “5” represents creativity. Fun fact: Claudia includes a “5” in her signature every time she signs. It's these personal touches that give Amuse 5 its unique vibe.

Walking into Amuse 5 Bakery, you're immediately struck by the inviting ambiance and chic décor. It's the perfect spot to lose track of time, whether catching up with friends over breakfast, enjoying a solo brunch, or unwinding with a glass of wine.

But what about the food? Every dish at Amuse 5 is made in-house with love and care daily. This means the team gets up early to make it fresh from scratch for you. It's a culinary delight that will leave you craving more. And don’t even start on their coffee—Italian and Colombian blends brewed to perfection, making it the perfect pairing for any meal or conversation.

What truly sets Amuse 5 apart is its commitment to fostering a sense of community and connection. With live music events, cozy seating areas, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, it's the kind of place where every guest feels special.

Since opening in October 2020, Amuse 5 has quickly become a beloved hangout for locals and visitors. Whether you're in the mood for a leisurely brunch, a quick coffee break, or an evening of live music, Amuse 5 has something for everyone.

For Sarasota tourists and guests, I especially want to point out that Amuse 5 is the perfect spot to enjoy a last bite and soak in the city's vibrant vibes before heading to the airport. It captures the essence of Sarasota’s charm and creativity, making it a must-visit.

Check out their website and follow them on Instagram for updates and the latest menu offerings:

I’m lucky to live just a few minutes from Selby Gardens, my go-to spot for recharging and finding inspiration. This place is unique—it is stunning and the world’s only botanical garden dedicated to epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads, and ferns.
Selby Gardens is hosting an extraordinary exhibition, "Yayoi Kusama: A Letter to Georgia O’Keeffe," but time is running out! There's only one month left to experience this unique showcase of nature-inspired art.
In the 1950s, a young Yayoi Kusama contacted Georgia O’Keeffe for guidance. O’Keeffe’s response, filled with encouragement, was a turning point for Kusama, giving her the confidence to move to New York and pursue her art. This exhibition is a tribute to their inspiring connection and a platform to showcase their nature-inspired works.

Explore Selby Gardens, renowned for its incredible collection of epiphytic plants. Soak in the beauty of the plants, and immerse yourself in the fascinating works of Kusama and O’Keeffe. Bring a friend and make a day of it—you won’t regret it!
