Warming Shelter Job Description
Position: Warming Shelter Guest Services Worker
Status: Non-Exempt, Temporary on call, Nov 15, 2022 – March 31, 2023
Where: Santa Maria, Lompoc, Santa Barbara, Carpenteria
Shift: Varies based on activation which is weather driven; approximately 4-12am; 12am-7a
In general, the Warming Shelter Guest Services Worker is responsible for the safety and supervision of consumers who use Warming Center Overnight services.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
1. Welcome and record attendance for participants, and supervise participant movement.
1. Maintain a safe, friendly, supportive and inviting environment.
2. Work compassionately with those who have difficulty engaging with service providers.
3. Effectively resolve conflicts among participants and de-escalate potentially violent situations.
4. Monitor participant activities and food distribution.
5. Responsible for setup of Warming Center services including handing out bedding and other amenities.
6. Ensure participants adhere to rules, especially related to behaviors that are unsafe – if necessary, notifying public safety personnel to help with clients who exhibit inappropriate or unsafe behaviors.
7. Respond appropriately to emergencies.
8. Maintain daily recordkeeping and reports.
9. Ensure facility is maintained in a clean and orderly fashion.
10. Provide information to supervisor after each shift regarding the number of participants, any need for supplies, incident reports, etc.
11. Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
High School Diploma
Experience:
1. Ability to work effectively with homeless individuals of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
2. Interest in helping volunteers and participants feel welcome while insuring a safe environment.
3. Willing to work when called for duty.
4. Ability to develop rapport, provide information, and refer with sensitivity to cultural issues.
5. Display a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently.
6. Possess excellent time management skills and the ability to work with minimum supervision.
7. Preferred previous experience with social services and/or homeless programs.
Requisite Skills:

1. Must pass a criminal, background check and not be on probation or parole or have warrants out for arrest.

3. Must be sensitive to client and volunteer needs and be able to manage multiple priorities.

4. Must conform to HIPPA regulations regarding client confidentiality.

5. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with and support diverse faith communities.

6. Effectively communicate with and relate to diverse, multi-ethnic, homeless, and low-income adults and children with multiple barriers.

7. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening according to federal guidelines.

Department: Emergency Shelter

Job Title: Shelter Staff

Pay Rate: $17

8am-4pm Monday-Saturday FT/PT available

All Good Samaritan Shelter employees working in California are required by the California State Public Health Officer Order of July 26, 2021 to be fully vaccinated and up to date with a booster. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination and booster is required or proof that you are in the process of becoming fully vaccinated and up to date with a booster. Staff will be required to test twice a week until fully vaccinated and up to date with a booster. Medical or sincerely held religious exemptions may be requested. All staff with an exemption must test twice weekly.

Wearing of face masks is required for all staff until further notice.

Job Summary:

The Emergency Shelter Staff Workers provide support and assistance in carrying out day to day operations of the Emergency Shelter by performing the following duties:

Responsibilities:

Β· Implements structure of Emergency Shelter program and services for day to day operations

Β· Prepares incident reports, client file documents, program attendance cards and data collection as necessary and maintains records of program related activities

Β· Interacts with adult clients

Β· Assists other Emergency Shelter staff in providing client services

Β· Fulfills other essential responsibilities and duties as may be assigned and/or required.

Β· Oversees client medications in accordance with agency and certification standards

Β· Attends meetings as directed in representation of the agency

Β· Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Β· Assist with food preparation and distribution

Β· May perform observed drug testing

Β· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:
Β· Professional verbal and written communication skills.

Β· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Β· Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.

Β· Ability to accomplish goals and produce valuable results with minimal supervision

Β· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Β· Excellent professional boundaries

Β· Maintain and execute confidential information according to HIPAA standards

Β· Exercise mature judgement, and are highly motivated, self-starting and proactive

Education and Experience:

Β· High school diploma or equivalent.

Β· Be able and willing to work flexible hours which may include evenings or weekends

Β· Have or be able and willing to obtain CPR/First Aid training Provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination

Β· Have reliable transportation and:

Β· A valid driver’s license

Β· The ability to qualify for Good Samaritan Shelter insurance coverage

Successfully complete the following as a condition of hire:

Tuberculosis Test Background Screening Drug Test

Work Environment
The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using alcohol and drugs, and who may not be attentive to basic personal hygiene, health and safety practices. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client’s use of alcohol and drugs, and lack of personal hygiene. The employee must be ready to respond quickly and effectively to many types of situations, including crisis situations and potentially hostile situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in an office setting. Sometimes work may become stressful when working under pressure.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, stoop, talk, hear, reach above and below shoulders; use hand and finger dexterity, keyboarding and making and receiving telephone calls. The employee may be required on occasion to lift and or carry up to 20 lbs.
