The original La Mirada Christmas House

If you grew up in La Mirada, or even if you didn't, you might remember it or you might have taken your kids to see it, or both.
It was on Ramo Drive, just steps from Hutchinson School and people walked from all the surrounding neighborhoods to view it.
It had an approximate 15-year run and it was created by Chris and Tom Wilkinson.
The Dickens-theme display began as a tribute to Chris’ son, Joey, who died in March of 1984 in a motorcycle accident, and to raise money for the Whittier Women’s and Children’s Crisis Center.
Did you know the City of La Mirada changed its own tree-lighting event in 1994 as to not coincide with the very popular event on Ramo?
It's hard to believe in our entire archive, we cannot find any photos of the house. Sounds like it's time to start going through our old shoe boxes full of photos here.
The following is a story from the December 1, 1994 edition of the L.A Times written 30 years ago by John Canalis. We have also provided a link. We extracted the text from the story in case you hit a paywall; we're sure they won't mind!

Tom and Chris Wilkinson, who transform their property into a “Christmas House” each year to raise money for charity, will light their display Sunday after two months of preparations.
Hundreds of onlookers are expected to show up Sunday to inspect the Wilkinson's latest extravaganza, which includes about 70 Christmas trees, a sled with model reindeer, a miniature Ferris wheel, a miniature ski slope, a model train, a Nativity scene, dozens of model figures and 10,000 lights stretching from the front lawn to the roof of their home at 14371 Ramo Drive.
The 6 p.m. lighting also will feature carolers, a disc jockey and about a dozen children dressed as elves.
The event has proved so popular with residents in previous years that the city has rescheduled its own tree-lighting ceremony for Dec. 8 to avoid a conflict, said City Manager Gary Sloan.
A man dressed as Santa Claus will be stationed in the couple’s garage nightly from Monday to Dec. 24 to pose for photographs with those who donate $5 to an organization that helps abused children. The Wilkinson's said they collected $5,000 last year.
The Wilkinson's have been decorating their home for 11 years and raising money for charity for the last eight years. The display will stand until Jan. 1.
“If we didn’t really care about each other, we would never make it through Christmas, because this is very, very stressful,” Chris Wilkinson said.
