Fifteen minutes after the scheduled start of the “Abolition. Feminism. Now.” speaker event, the line still runs all the way through Quarry Plaza. Some have brought their own copies of the book, and others have already taken out their wallets to buy a copy.

On the other side of the stage, Angela Davis, Gina Dent, Erica R. Meiner, and Beth E. Richie huddle together with event organizers in anticipation for what is about to happen. It’s the first time all four writers have been physically present in the same place together since the book’s release.

Everyone is excited.

Our last post from the John R. Lewis College Dedication is an opinion piece written by the Editorial Board.

As College Ten takes on a new name, we urge the university to live up to the legacy of the man behind the college.

While John R. Lewis stood for social justice and “good trouble” in advancing civil rights, UC Santa Cruz ignored the demands of the BSU and threatened those who stood with COLA protesters.

Do not allow the name of John R. Lewis to be used performatively. Allow for good trouble to truly spark on our campus, and uphold the values of Congressman Lewis.

While there were many people who took to the podium for the college dedication, these three keynote speeches addressed the audience in ways that were unique from each other and in unity with the demands of the Black Student Union.

During the John R. Lewis College dedication, BSU President X Starr looked both UC President Michael Drake and UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Cynthia Larive in the eye and had one message for the both of them. Start listening to your student

To Starr, the same urgency given in renaming College Ten wasn’t given to Black students on campus whose demands to Chancellor Larive regarding actions to support Black students’ equitable access to housing, food resources, and mental health care has not been fully addressed.

From the backlog: Due to the recent leak from the Supreme Court, students locally and across the nation have been protesting the possible overturn of Roe v. Wade. UC Santa Cruz students are no different — armed with signs, chants and compassion, students took to the street to be heard.

Since its early days in the American Studies department, the student-led course format has aided in the organization and strengthening of communities at UC Santa Cruz. This quarter, student leaders head two courses under the Critical Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES) department: CRES 45 Pilipinx Historical Dialogue and CRES 70B the Black Radical University? class.

Although students have historically exercised their academic autonomy through these spaces, university policies have barred validation of this political education. In response, generations of students have demanded they have access to community-building classrooms and decolonized curriculum. Students involved in CRES 45 and CRES 70B speak to us about how their organizing work is realized through these classes and the importance of non-hierarchical learning spaces in the cultivation of community.

For the past four years, May 5 has been a day of remembrance for thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG). This year, we are urging our readers to pay attention.

We must do better to protect Indigenous women and girls moving forward. In order to do that, we must first understand the interconnecting violences that are imposed on Indigenous communities all over Turtle Island.

Many Santa Cruz street vendors grow worried over the City Council’s recent 4-3 decision to heighten vending regulations. In addition to expanded permit requirements, the move prohibits setting up on a popular portion of Beach Street during the summer, and bans vending on the Santa Cruz Wharf.

The Santa Cruz Starbucks branch on the corner of Ocean and Water Street will become the first branch in California to officially unionize on May 11, 2022.

The accomplishment comes in the face of anti-union propaganda, union vote delays, and union discouragement from the corporation, toward both their store and stores across the country.
