🚨 Breaking News! Election Anxiety Overshadowed by Banana-Slug Gate
🤯 In a shocking development, California’s newly designated state slug, the banana slug (Ariolimax californicus), has been accused of devouring the state flower, the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica). Witnesses claim they saw the notoriously sluggish creature chomping down on the bright orange petals of the beloved wildflower, leading to widespread outrage, social media uproar, and whispers of potential criminal charges.

Meet the Mariposa Lily!
🦋 Meet the Mariposa Lily!
🌻 Mariposa lilies (Calochortus sp.) are charming, late-spring flowers that bloom throughout California. There are several species of mariposa lily that can be found in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz County, including the butterfly mariposa lily (Calochortus venustus), yellow mariposa lily (Calochortus luteus), clay mariposa lily (Calochortus argillosus), and more. These lilies are in the same genus as the white globe lily (Calochortus albus).
🤓 The name “mariposa” comes from the Spanish word for butterfly, because the mariposa lily flowers often bear some resemblance to the pollinators. Mariposa lilies are perennial wildflowers, meaning they bloom year after year in the same spot. If you see a mariposa lily this year, mark the spot you saw it on a map and you will likely be able to see it in the same place next year. These lilies bloom from large underground bulbs, which served as an Indigenous food source.
