Hilltromper Silicon Valley

Hilltromper Silicon Valley We're the nature-worshiping, fun-loving adventurer's guide to the South Bay & SF Peninsula.

Hilltromper is a one-stop outdoor recreation resource for nature lovers, hikers, mountain bikers, birders, climbers, amateur lepidopterists and all the other people we call "Hilltrompers." We create researched guides to local parks and trails, a calendar of outdoor events, news updates on recreational and environmental news and a guide to the community organizations working to make the world a bet

ter place. In short, we want to help people get outside and connect with nature, so we give them all the information they need to do that.

🏃Do your goals for the New Year include getting healthier, connecting with nature, or getting outside?🦹‍♂️ Then, kick-starting those goals with a First Day Hike into The Forest of Nisene Marks.

🏃‍♀️Join a State Parks Interpreter for a 4.0 mile, 3.0-hour walk to discover the history and prehistory of this redwood forest. You will hike to the site where the town of Loma Prieta used to be, see the remains of the sawmill, and discover fossils deep inside the redwood forest. This is a light to moderate hike, so bring water, snacks and dress warm with layers.

👫👭We’ll meet at the Georges Picnic Area next to the steel bridge about one mile past the kiosk on Wednesday, January 1st, @ 9:00 am. Though this is a free event, there is a day-use auto fee of $8.00. California State Parks and Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks are making this event possible. Continuous rain will cancel the hike.

Can you imagine seeing this huge chute?! You can learn more about this soon to be new county beach in our recent article/park page: https://siliconvalley.hilltromper.com/article/don-horsley-county-park-tunitas-creek-beach

The farmlands surrounding Tunitas Creek were once used for hay and oat farming and cattle grazing. One of the landowners, Alexander Gordon, wanted an easier way to get his goods to market. In 1872, he designed Gordon's Chute, which was built off of the cliffs at Tunitas Creek Beach. Farm goods could be loaded from the clifftops, and move down the chute to waiting ships below. Although the chute was destroyed in a storm in 1885, some eyebolts are still embedded in the cliff face.
