Flesk Publications

Flesk Publications www.fleskpublications.com Flesk Publications pride itself on being different. The result is a unique and individual collection produced with passion.

Since 2002, Flesk Publications has been promoting the arts through quality collections.

“The company was founded as a direct result of my desire to publish the art books I wanted to buy myself,” states publisher John Fleskes. A creative approach is pursued by exploring the aesthetics of each artist in order to design a package that serves as an extension of him or herself. Flesk produces a full l

ine of art books featuring the best of comics and graphic novels, fantasy, illustration, pinup and fine arts. Fleskes shares a passion for the arts and feels a responsibility in making sure he represents his artists with the best books possible while also raising the art form. “We hope to educate the public to expect a higher standard from publishers,” continues Fleskes. “We take our work very seriously yet enjoy the process. Whether it’s a 16-page chapbook or a 300-page oversized art book, we give each collection our full attention to meet our standards first. I have a self-drive that makes this approach a natural part of what Flesk Publications is all about. It isn’t a policy, it’s who we are.”

I like looking at art late at night to rest my brain. I found this Al Williamson sketch online. It reminds me just how much Al is one of my favorite artists. It also reminds me about how much I'm itching to work on another collection of his work. I have a few ideas that I'll run by the Williamson family as soon as we wrap up the William Stout Comics three volume set. --John

Watching Diamond Comic Distributors and the new owners work so hard to do the wrong thing has been like watching a train wreck in slow motion with far too many publishers onboard as kidnapped passengers.

Reading about how companies like Dynamite and Fantagraphics, along with many, many others, are having to fight for their inventory is like seeing DCD lighting that train on fire as they are all going over a cliff. The DCD lawyers are all wearing parachutes and have jumped out like D.B. Cooper holding onto massive bags of cash. Just take a look at their fees collected to see what I am talking about.

I'm intentionally being a bit dramatic about this. And I have good reason. Seeing how publishers are being treated so poorly is something I take personally.

If you are curious about how the DCD bankruptcy is affecting us, I count my blessings that we do not use them as our book trade distributor. They owe us $6,253.40 for ElfQuest Covers books that we delivered to them in December 2024. It would cost me more in lawyer fees to try and collect this money and it would be very doubtful that we could secure what they owe to us. We have no Flesk stock/inventory with them on consignment. As soon as the bankruptcy was announced on January 14th I immediately stopped shipping or soliciting any of our books to and with them. I also informed our distributor PGW/Ingram to not ship DCD any of our books. I didn’t trust them to pay us and I’m so glad I made that decision early this year.

I predicted the possibility of Diamond’s demise back in late 2020. DCD spent too many years being the sole distributor to the comics market. When a new distribution option was available to DC, Marvel, then later to Image, DCD didn’t make the necessary adjustments from being a monopoly to having to compete with other distributors. In 2023 and 2024 I kept asking myself how they were still not in trouble? It turns out they were but kept their struggles hidden. I’ve been reading the court documents that are very revealing and show just how messy the situation was for years. I could go on and on about this at length, but overall it’s a shame to see so many publishers being hurt by the DCD bankruptcy, along with the poor communication and handling by the new owners. I can't see how any publisher would want to work with them going forward.

For store owners or publishers, how is the DCD bankruptcy affecting you?

Vicky and I are back after 5 days in SoCal that consisted of research, hiking, surfing, walking along the coast, and visiting artist friends. One of the awesome individuals who we saw was Daren Bader, who made this beautiful painting that I'm sharing here. It was great catching up with him!

We went to the Flesk office this afternoon to get caught up on the orders that arrived while we were away.

Now for some much needed sleep!

Tran Nguyen's cover painting for the upcoming Fantastic Four #3 has been revealed and it's gorgeous! This issue comes out in September. The interior art is by Humberto Ramos, who if you're not aware, is one of the best comic artists working today.

Also available in September are Tran's two art book collections from Flesk, Spectres and Ambedo. We're overjoyed to be working with Tran to release these big beautiful books that collect her paintings. All Tran fans are in for a treat in September!
