They lean more heavily into their hardcore adjacent inspiration much more frequently in their earlier music–before the band temporarily broke up in 2012–and the intense, driving sound of their earlier EPs and singles has remained immensely popular among MOTFD’s fan base to this day.“

“I had originally planned to slip out of my seat, grab my gear, and head out near the end of the set, around when everyone starts begging for an encore, but little did I know how much I would have regretted leaving early. I wasn’t aware of the Foo Fighters tradition to not say goodbye at live shows. Instead, they play “Everlong”. …I would be lying to say I didn’t spend the entire set hoping they’d play it. It’s evil to keep everyone waiting until the end, but it made it so much more impactful when I finally heard it.“

Prof. Dick Flacks marks the 60th anniversary of the Mississippi Freedom Summer project, a pro voting-rights, anti-white supremacist organizing initiative in 1964, with special guest Paul Lauter, a lifelong activist, scholar, and author with ties to the freedom schools of that period.

Freedom songs from that summer will be heard along with this oral history.

"Culture of Protest" airs each Thursday afternoon in the summer at 4pm PDT.
