"We can’t change our past . . . We can’t change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that’s our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you react." -Charles Swindoll

An outline is an essential part of your writing journey, like water is an essential part of any hike.

You might be surprised that a lot of writers when asked if they have an outline, respond that they don’t. “I know where I’m going,” or the classic response, “I have an idea.”

An idea of where you want to go with your book is great. That’s a start. An outline is like a map to your book. It’ll help you get where you want to go faster.

Writing is not easy. It can even be agonizing. Writer's block. Distractions. The struggle is real. But I guarantee you, not writing is worse. The time you spend writing is worth it.

The publishing process is long and arduous. It requires a lot of you. That’s why we have to focus on what you can control.

❌ You don’t get to control the New York Times Bestsellers List.

❌ You don’t get to control changes at your publishing house.

❌ You don’t get to control the size of that other author’s platform (even though you’ve worked twice as hard as they have!!!).

✔️ But you do get to control and prioritize time to write and edit.

✔️ You do get to control the things you say “Yes” to and the things you say “No” to.

✔️ You do get to control the effort you are putting into growing your platform.

Telling yourself you have a choice helps to fight against the strain of all the juggling. You’ve made a commitment to control what YOU can control.

The biggest difference between writers winning this battle and losing it is how they respond. Let me give you an example. Recently during a one-on-one coaching call, the writer I was speaking with lamented how many rejections he’d harvested. There were hundreds. The writer was losing hope. Here’s what we did: We listened to the rejections. What were people saying? How could we use that information to reshape and rethink his book project? Suddenly, what felt like hundreds of rejections felt like a path to a better book.

The biggest difference between writers winning this battle and losing it is how they respond.

A writer can’t control an agent taking on another writer’s book similar to the one that she just queried, nor can she control a publisher that already did “a book like that one.” These things are out of your control. But the numbers favor those who see rejection as a staircase helping them to climb to the top of their goals. Each stair, each rejection, gets you closer to that “Yes” – that representation you’ve been seeking or the book contract that is going to launch your work. Without rejection, The Resistance is winning.

Every writer wants to know how to build a stronger platform. We get constantly asked, How much is enough? What number should I shoot for?

When asked how much money is enough, John D. Rockefeller famously said, “Just a little bit more.” The same goes for platform numbers. More is always better. Even if you have a large platform, it could be a bit bigger, right? Most writers are in platform infancy. So what do you do when you’re pulling together your proposal and you want to talk about your platform that you wish was, “Just a little bit more?”

For 3 ways to talk about your platform when you don't have one, check out this week's blog post: https://www.authorcoaching.com/blog/what-to-talk-about-when-you-talk-about-platform.

Thicker skin begins with building repetition. You’ll get stronger and tougher as you go. And when you’re feeling like your skin isn’t thick enough, remind yourself to focus on the things you can control.

If your goal is to write a book, give yourself a daily word count goal. Here’s an easy one: 250 words a day. That’s easy (Goals should be easy, BTW). If you write 250 words a day for six months, you’ll have 45,000 words. Most books contract for 55,000 words. A daily word goal helps combat procrastination while providing a finish line. Plus, we bet you’ll crush that goal and go over 250 words.

Marketing can’t save you; only value can. The best marketers know you have to give your audience consistent value if you want people to listen to you.

That’s why it’s important to stop what you are doing today and ask yourself, “What value am I bringing to my audience?”

When your audience responds to the value you are bringing, you are going in the right direction. Keep adding value.

Professionals know when to wave the white flag. What we mean is: If you’re going to be late on your manuscript, it’s better to surrender now rather than wait until the night before - or worse, the day of - your deadline to communicate about your delay. It’s just like when you’re stuck in traffic and know you’re not going to be on time. When your manuscript deadline is a month out, and you’re way behind schedule, don’t make the mistake of telling yourself you’ll make up the time by speeding on the freeway. It’s good manners to let your agent and editor know right away. That way they can help you. But it will also help your editor manage your project in relation to all of their other projects. Like we said before, they’ve got a lot of books they are working on. Giving them a heads up as soon as you can will not go unnoticed. Professionals manage their careers, while amateurs believe they can write 35,000 words in two weeks.

You might get into a disagreement over edits in a conversation with your editor. Your editor has suggested a change you don’t agree with and now the two of you are at an impasse. "Seek first to understand," as Stephen Covey says in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Giving your editor a chance to speak their mind and explain further will help them both be heard AND feel seen by you. Here’s something else to remember whenever you find yourself in conflict with your publisher: Don’t forget that they do this for a living. They work on a lot of books, and there’s a lot of wisdom stored up. You are only working on one book, while they might be working on many more this season. Listen to what they have to say. Their perspective is important.
