Understanding the Costs of Cable Internet

Understanding the Costs of Cable Internet http://wp.me/p5EDaD-D

Every day I see cable providers touting their internet services as the latest and greatest internet technology available for businesses. Why wouldn’t they? Just the other day I saw an ad for a 300MB connection going for $64.99. While I do think it is exciting to be able to have bandwidth like that at home to power all my devices, business owners and IT professions should think twice before making this type of connection their primary internet access for their employees. 4 Tips for selecting a hosted VoIP provider:

1. Identify the features you need—and the ones you don’t....
A lot of hosted VoIP providers offer a wide array of features, but what features will you really use in your daily operations?

2. Talk to other business owners....
Find other businesses similar to yours—in size, industry or number of employees. Talk
to your closest colleagues, bring it up at networking events and poll your LinkedIn
connections. Ask them for recommendations on business phone systems, the types of
features they use and any pitfalls they’ve encountered along the way.

3. Scale for future growth....
Don’t think about your phone system as a quick fix. Recognize it for the virtual machine
it can be. Think about the features you need today, and picture what your business might look like three years from now. Then, find a provider that’s poised to grow with you.

4. Look under the hood....
All hosted VoIP technology requires a voice network to operate. When you’re selecting a hosted VoIP provider, it’s critical that you know about the network—who owns it, who maintains it and who to call with issues. Ask your sales rep what’s behind their platform. A look under the hood should reveal a well-oiled machine that doesn’t rely on borrowed parts to keep the engine running.

How BYOD Became the Law of the Land

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is causing more headaches for IT Departments. MaaS (Management as a Service) is a quick solution for this...

RIM failed to understand that the iPhone would quickly displace its Blackberry in the corporate world. But it compounded that error with an even bigger mistake. It failed to understand that the iPhone changed the rules of IT by ushering in the era of Bring-Your-Own-Device.

What is "SIP" and how can it save a company money?

SIP stands for Session Internet Protocol. SIP is used for setting up, modifying, connecting and disconnecting a two-party or multiparty communication session. SIP is typically used for executing video or voice calls over the internet. So what is a SIP trunk? In the most basic terms, it is a single voice connection that is placed over an Internet connection. The VoIP “trunk” is connected to a provider who, in turn, routes the calls through their gateway. The significant savings are possible because the provider that routes the calls can offer packages at dramatically lower costs. This is because a significant portion of the call travels, at almost no additional cost, over the IP network or the Internet, and the provider can eliminate low capacity network lines and replace them with multiple capacity IP connectivity. Furthermore, because the calls are placed on the most economical route, over the carrier’s IP backbone and then to the media gateway, charges are reduced by eliminating tariffs that would normally be placed on numerous connections.

What is MPLS?

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a standards-approved technology for speeding up network traffic flow and making it easier to manage. MPLS involves setting up a specific path for a given sequence of packets, identified by a label put in each packet, thus saving the time needed for a router to look up the address to the next node to forward the packet to. MPLS is called multiprotocol because it works with the Internet Protocol (IP), Asynchronous Transport Mode (ATM), and frame relay network protocols. MPLS allows most packets to be forwarded at the Layer 2 (switching) level rather than at the Layer 3 (routing) level. In addition to moving traffic faster overall, MPLS makes it easy to manage a network for quality of service (QoS). For these reasons, the technique is should be adopted as networks begin to carry more and different mixtures of traffic across multiple locations.

Class of Service vs. Quality of Service.....

Class of Service (CoS) is a way of managing traffic in a network by grouping similar types of traffic (for example, e-mail, streaming video, voice, large document file transfer) together and treating each type as a class with its own level of service priority. Unlike Quality of Service (QoS) traffic management, Class of Service technologies do not guarantee a level of service in terms of bandwidth and delivery time; they offer a "best-effort."
