A 42-year-old Sandusky man convicted of crimes against children will spend up to 50 years behind bars in a sentence the judge called a “Christmas Gift” to the residents of Sanilac County.

“The best Christmas gift I could give the people of this county is to give you a significant sentence, which is what I am about to do,” Sanilac County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Wrathell told Terry Aben, who was found guilty by a jury in October on 28 charges of criminal sexual conduct, and possession of child po*******hy.

Most of the orange barrels are gone, and the main throughfares are open to traffic through Sandusky’s downtown business district.

Following months of construction, M-46 and M-19, the state highways that run through Sandusky and intersect at the downtown traffic light, are again open to motorists, providing access to businesses hurt by the drop-off in customers who shopped elsewhere rather than deal with street closings, detours, and parking issues.

This Saturday, Nov. 30, the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce invites you to rediscover Sandusky’s restaurants, shops and businesses during the 15th Annual Small Business Saturday. Sixteen businesses are participating in the shopping day with one-day specials.

A group of local citizens and business owners in the Carsonville, Port Sanilac area have come together to take care of “some folks in town,” as Gail Innis, of Port Sanilac, puts it.

Innis spearheaded a group of about 10 volunteers who worked with 18 businesses to bring the “Not the Grinch, It’s Grassroots Generosity” project together for the first time this holiday season.

“We really wanted to cover things not covered by food stamps (or other assistance),” said Innis at a recent Port Sanilac Business Association meeting.

While celebrating Thanksgiving this week, Innis said it is important to remember that the first word in the holiday is thanks, and the second word is giving.

What she and other volunteers hope to do is give a beautiful holiday to residents who may be struggling this year, and the group has already identified several families to receive a portion of the donations, and some will be given to local senior citizens as well.

Businesses throughout the communities will have trees designated for the giving project, and each is asking for a specific type of donation.
