Sandusky School board nears decision on wellness program

The Sandusky Board of Education is expected to decide next Tuesday whether to accept the state funded School Wellness Program.
The Tuesday, Jan. 16 meeting at 5:30 p.m. will come on the heels of a special board meeting on Jan. 8, where members heard a presentation from the local health department and hospital about how the wellness program would work at the school, and took questions from the large audience in attendance.
Sandusky officials learned in February 2023 that the grant application submitted by the Sanilac County Health Department to implement the program at the school was approved but needed final approval from the board.
The deadline for the board to approve the interagency agreement with the health department is this month. The funding will pay for a registered nurse and social worker in the elementary and junior-high school buildings full time, Monday through Friday, and to remodel the current board of education room in the junior-senior high for office and storage area for the wellness program.
Parental consent forms would be required for students younger than 14 to receive services, with parents having the right to approve or reject services for their children. Students ages 14 and over can legally receive mental health services without parental consent, but with a limit of 12 visits, or four months.
Nursing services can range from treatment of minor injuries on the playground to assisting in managing chronic illness and training school staff.
Mental health services can range from individual and group therapy to wellness techniques.
Staff hired under the program cannot provide abortion counseling, services, or make referrals for abortion services. They also cannot prescribe, dispense or distribute family planning drugs or devices, such as condoms.
Although some School Wellness Programs in other districts administer vaccinations, the Sandusky program will not, stated Katie O’Mara, wellness program director at the health department.
O’Mara said the health department and school officials felt parents can obtain vaccinations for children elsewhere.
Some audience members, and school board members, expressed concern on the need for more parental involvement in the type of services provided to children.
O’Mara, however, assured the audience that there will be an emphasis on parent involvement “from day one.”
Audience members also spoke in support of the program, noting that while the school currently has social workers on staff more are needed, and the only “nursing” type services currently available are provided by office secretaries.
Superintendent Kurt Dennis pointed out that the school would have the ability to terminate the wellness program at any time, with 60 days advance notice, and said he would be monitoring the program.
A board committee is expected to meet this week with staff from the health department and McKenzie hospital, which will provide the mental health services, to discuss amending the proposed interagency agreement to address concerns of the board and community.
At the conclusion of the approximate two-hour discussion on Jan. 8, audience member Mike Smith, who had posed several questions, commended the board on the way the meeting was handled.
“I’m so proud of this board,” said Smith. “You asked the hard questions…we hammered it out…I think you’re doing a great job.”
In other business, the board voted to hire Megan Pearce as the new business manager. Pearce will replace Kendra Messing, who has been hired as business manager for Croswell-Lexington Schools. Pearce is currently the business manager at Capac Community Schools.
