Namibian landscape and heat are no joke… We had a fuel pump issue in the 40° temperatures, but unsure of it was overheating or a vapour issue, but we are making great progress while trying to stay hydrated and cool.

We always have a live GPS tracker on, along with details of the Two orphanages that we are raising money for, which you can see on the xjamiex website.

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA!
Thank you for an amazing welcome! We are stunned and so appreciative!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There meeting was at the Pupkewitz Goldwagen store - nearby their VW dealership - and filled the whole street and parking lots with awesome cars and people.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
K-swapped Mk1 Track car? Yup!
Citi Golf R-Line? Yup!
Mk3 on air with 1.8T swap? Hell yeah!
Slammed Polos and Caddy’s and so much more? Definitely!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We met a ton of new friends, learnt about the capital city, and also got to make some small repairs on the car, thanks to Goldwagen and some other people helping out. Truly a wonderful welcome and evening, and we thank everybody again!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our next stop will be the border from the media into South Africa, and then Cape Town on Monday evening. We estimate we have 3,000-3,700km to to go depending on our route.

The incredible Serra de Leba mountain road in Angola - the crowning jewel road on our trip across Southern Africa, and maybe one of the most incredible roads in the world…?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Located between the city of Lubango, and the coastal town of Moçâmedes Namibe, it climbs 1,845m / 6,053ft above sea level, and I definitely rank it alongside other roads such Transfargarason, Großglockner, Jebel Jais, in my humble opinion.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The road is part of a park, with a very small access fee, which winds through a variety of different landscapes after defending the curves, each very beautiful.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
First it turns to vegetation (with some locals wearing traditional attire, and other selling fruits and vegetables), then changes to dry valleys with beautiful rock formations, and a final drop down to the start of the arid desert and the sea.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes, it’s quite remote (okay, perhaps it qualifies as very remote?), with only fuel stops at each town on the end of the 100 miles / 160km full stretch), and many many hours driving from any capital city, but it is truly worth it, and I’m so glad to have visited the road with the Mk1 Citi Golf and two friends.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How about a daydream of returning with R edbull or similar, to fix the potholes for the locals, and then some incredible proper filming…? In the meantime, will be posting up on YouTube with a full drive in the slammed Golf with gepfeffert.com - The suspension made by 🥰

The coast at the Namib Desert. One of my bucket list places. We’re at the northern start of the desert, which runs 2,000km south, from Angola, through all of Namibia, to the northern part of South Africa. We’ll do that 2,000km and 2 border crossings by Sunday (today is Friday)..

We made it through the first part of our longest most remote days - 8 hours of gravel and broken tarmac, with no signal and villages with mud walled thatched roof homes only. The surfaces and average speeds were brutal. We got stuck once, but otherwise slow and steady progress. We are now approaching the Namibian border and the Caprivi Strip - with 2,000km to cover as quickly as is safely possible.

Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya) was SENSATIONAL. It far exceeded expectations! And that we drove there in a lowered Citi Golf feels a little surreal 😅
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I didn’t have the highest high hopes - I was wondering if it might be overhyped and I’m not really a waterfall person per se, but honestly it was incredible and I could have spent a full day watching the water and rainbows and the micro-rain forest that surrounds it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think it deserves its place on the list of Wonders of the World. I did not realise how long and winding the falls are - Niagara Falls is very simple and straight forwards compared to the winding turns and different sections here. And so many rainbows, absolutely everywhere. It really was strikingly beautiful ❤️🌍

Two very different solutions to a snapped clutch cable end - which so many people have said they have experienced too! 😅
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The nice version is a machined and welded beauty built for super simple installation at the DRD HQ in Johannesburg. It could prove to be a nice upgrade for any cable in the future. It requires no tools, and can be installed instantly once the remainder of the plastic end is removed. Super clever 😍
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The other solution (mine..) is a bunch of random pieces from an old school hardware store here in Livingstone, Zambia. It only needs a wrench or socket to install, should pivot nicely and is uhh, janky to say the least 😂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanks again to everyone that suggested solutions and good luck. We did drive the car by rev matching once reaching civilisation, and it did really well.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If anyone wants to know how to do that for the future, with the engine off, put the car in first gear, and then start the car making it lurch forwards until it fires and then you are driving. You can shift when the engine speed matches the transmission speed, when it will just smoothly pop into gear. You can only fully stop, by putting it in neutral or stalling it. Then you have to switch the engine off and start again.

Epic and wild end to the day, after the clutch cable snapped - we are safely posting from an Italian restaurant near a hotel called Fawlty Towers in Livingston, Zambia.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The 80 km 50 miles with no clutch cable was mainly super smooth, happily rev matching the shifting, and starting in first gear.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a final twist, when we followed the directions to try to make it to an Airbnb address, it was incorrectly 4 km into a township in the wrong direction, which we realised when the roads started to run out. Some lovely local people helped push the car when we had to do a three point turn after getting stuck. Sincerely lovely people. So we eventually bailed on reaching the Airbnb (whose support team have been great - 2 minute phone call and sorted), and got two rooms at the Fawlty Towers hotel.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Somehow starting the car on the starter to pull into the parking seems like a totally plausible sketch from the old TV show 😂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A huge massive mega thanks to everyone who commented with support and ideas. The cable is from a Honda, and is a fairly common failure point on VW and Honda alike. I should have carried a spare - there was talk of it but it didn’t happen. My bad. We have a small variety of parts but not that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s a plethora of fix options, which are much easier now that we’re in a town, but as is flying in to rejoin us tomorrow, we will likely get a replacement upgrade end solution invented by - and I may fix this cable to have a backup also. A lovely bit of timing coincidence.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now we have some pasta on order, and air conditioning in the rooms. And our hearts are warm from the support and well wishes - this was a small one, made a wee but more difficult by the pot holes and speed bumps and heat. But we’re smiling and high fiving and safe. Thanks y’all ❤️

Clutch cable end just snapped in Zambia. I drove 40 miles / 70km to a toll booth in 4th gear, and have now stopped and removed the cable. We can fix it somehow but not here on the side of the road realistically.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are 15 miles / 23KM from Livingstone, Zambia. (Which is next to Victoria Falls). Honestly, this is supremeluck, as once we leave Livingston, we have 3,000KM to our next major city or if we make a detour, it’s 900 miles / 1,500km to a city.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is a cable from a different car for the motorswap - being a slightly unusual part, I probably should’ve been carrying a spare. Hindsight is 20/20.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My brainstorming right now while it’s all happening live, is to:
1) find a parts store and look for something that will fit.
2) find a junkyard, same as above.
3) find a motorbike repair shop and put a new end from another cable on or otherwise make something work.
4) Find a 3-axis CNC machine, with some CAD software, and make something. I’m not the best CAD drawer, so having a 3-D printer on hand to rapid prototype first for test fitting would be best. That way I could make a two part clamp around version out of aluminium that will probably never break.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As always, we are live streaming our GPS location and there’s a link to support our charities on my website. 🥰

Huge thank you to everyone we met in Harare, Zimbabwe late night at Faith Fuels - and to the family owned fuel station for letting this scene out of a Fast and Furious movie happen, with music and cars and people everywhere around the pumps and garage!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We never know what to expect in each country, and each stopping point, but every stop in Zimbabwe was a completely amazing surprise, especially thanks to VW Team Zimbabwe.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think it’s most traveler’s dream to get to meet and chat with local people, and for us that also includes to learn about their cars and modifications., and the rules and laws that go with them, and to really get to hang out is incredible. I think it’s an experience that a few travellers, especially on such tight schedules are so lucky to experience.

We have a live video shared on IG that goes around most of the many cars - so sorry for not so many photos!

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We left Johannesburg later than hoped, but thanks to the huge prep and work by we think the car is in the best possible shape for the unsupported drive. Including the new chopped lowered roof rack, with laser cut side pieces!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The car feels great, on its first full drive with 3 passengers, 2 spare wheels, 2 40L fuel cans, large electric cooler, plus tools, spare parts, clothes, cameras, and a dozen cans of octane booster to keep the 20 valve motor swap happy. Oh, yeah, and no A/C….

Johannesburg - what a turn out, thank you!
Day 0 of our 15,000kM trip across Southern Africa.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tomorrow we leave South Africa for Botswana, but before we left and organised an impromptu car meeting, and I am so grateful and surprised by the turnout!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We met and chatted with so many people, I didn’t take nearly enough photos sorry! There were at least 4 different Citi R-Line or Rox, multiple great Nissan 2xx, some great Honda Civics, and all sorts of Jetta, Polo, Golfs from early Mk1 though Mk8, plus BMW old and new, Porsche, and much more. Such a great car city!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanks to for selling me a roof rack, and I also bought a 15” Citi Velociti alloy wheel as a full size spare (I didn’t get your SN sorry, but thanks!).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And so now, it’s time to pack, watch the Eagles game, and then final work at DRD early tomorrow before we leave.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’ll share our live tracker website tomorrow, and will find a spot to meet people in Gaborone, Botswana tomorrow evening - we welcome suggestions. Thanks all!
