Dirty van, clean engine… If only LIQUIMOLY Engine Flush cleaned the outside too 😂

The 4.6 Ton dually VW van just passed 400,000km and hasn’t had an oil change in way too long - so it’s definitely time for some Motorspülung, which is the German market name for Engine Cleaner aka Motor Flush.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pour about 500ml of the engine flush into the engine oil before a oil change - 500ml will work for a normal 4-7 litre oil capacity, then let the engine idle for 10 minutes - no driving or revving. Then drain the now super thin oil out, replace the oil filter, and put new oil in. Done ✔️

With how dark the oil always is on the old diesels, I wonder if it’s possible to ever get the engines clean enough to have golden coloured oil at the end of an oil change interval? Can a new Diesel engine even do that?

PVW Magazine - my first time holding our first independently published issue. Thank you everyone who has helped make this possible, who sent Elliott and I love, who helped with photos, words, layouts, and supported by advertising and by subscribing.❤️

In a year of car media changing so much, on YouTube, print, TV, and the interwebs, we wanted to make sure Performance VW stays as a print magazine, and stays healthy for the future.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The magazine has been going since 1996, but this, December 2024, marks the first issue that’s been independently published under enthusiast ownership.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s been a very small amount of Editorial-In-Chiefs since the start, and I want to outwardly give a huge thank you to for keeping the magazine what it is, for the last decades and for the future under his editorship.
⠀⠀
We believe car owners want a place to have their cars immortalised, and that readers want to have a place to read in-depth content with fantastic photography. And we appreciate every single person and company that feels likewise.
⠀⠀
If you’ve received your print or digital copy, we both sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed it. And if it’s still en route, thanks for your patience. With double the number of feature cars, readers rides returning, plus guest columns and many more articles. we put as much content in there as would fit.

Subscription copies are still en route for some, and we’re still learning the postage time, but it seems that the USA West Coast and a Canadian mail strike meant those are the slowest, and we’re working on how you can buy individual back copies in the new year. Die Sh*tbox at by .performance… Not finished but still hugely exciting! 😱😍

V10 rear engine, wide body, a period perfect front end, and the back half lifts up for access.. It’s one of those wild projects that just makes you smile - like Ruud’s W12 Fridolin from Netherlands did long before 🥰
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In my opinion, this Golf 3 takes big inspiration from the construction of the twin-engine VW Golf 2 Pikes Peak, with its space frame, the way the firewall is constructed, with folding rear half body work, and rear engine mounting style, plus the wild race suspension from KW, and I’m all in for it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But as the text explains, this is one of those projects that may have taken a back burner - which makes it somehow very relatable to a lot of car people. Here’s what the German text says :

2024 European and KW Berg Cup Championship winning car and driver with her dad’s beautiful Mk1 Golf that she piloted to the double win this year 💛

This 16v engine’d, Sadev sequential transmissioned, centre locked BBS wheel’d Mk1 has carbon doors weighing less than 5lb and a host other other top racey parts in the mix - check out the cut in the firewall for the exhaust headers…!

But probably by far the most impressive thing, is that this year it was so consistently fast and reliable, that it won overall honours in the European Hill Cilmb series, and its class - the famous Berg Cup.

Built a bit over 15 years ago and originally driven by Claire’s father, he handed control of the start button (..there’s no keys..) after Claire moved up through the ranks of karting in slalom events. The victory earned her a test drive for a WRC feeder series, which is ongoing this winter.

Back to back cross USA trips - Tiny VW west, Big VW east. Now I’m heading home in the T4 TDI Campervan while the Lupo lives with 💙

The van belongs to who bought it from after their long roadtrip that started at their HQ in Nürburgring to the in the USA. They then drove the whole way around the USA, ending in So Cal at the Sunday Morning Meet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, with an oil change in Fresno at the HQ, I’ve been heading home via Utah to say hello to - and record the first podcast, and now it’s a quick (… slow…) blast east back to Pottstown.

Thoughts? It was indeed complete with lots of tourist traps, and for some reason I was surprised at the distances between them, with lots of open space. Which makes complete sense having driven across America a lot, but somehow always imagine the Route 66 would be lined with more on the whole way.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some parts were beautifully restored, while others had been left to decay. Some of these were sad to see, while others were heartwarming. Of course lots of the scenery was amazing. And even when traveling next to the highways, it was easier to see and stop while on the smaller road.

Everyone along the way was very nice, and I’m glad that they’re able to sustain the history and themselves on the route.

Staying in a lot of the original famous motels and motor courts was fantastic, although obviously there charm was in how basic they were. Hot water and showerheads above head height were not guaranteed…
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve long dreamt of doing a big cruise on the road with friends and lots of modified cars, but given the condition of a lot of the roads and the distances, I don’t think it would be practical to do a large group over such distance in season so many days. Definitely possible, but not with really beautiful show cars practically.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Was doing it under a week okay? Yes, in my opinion for sure. But maybe 10 days would make it more relaxed and more time for museums - and side trips to cities nearby the route.

It’s another epic road trip on my bucket list - after Route 40 in Argentina, the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania, the lap of South Africa. And literally all on ☺️🥰

Now the car is with in California, and I’m driving a different and much larger vehicle home - the 2.5 TDI VW T4 camper that just drove across the country - en route to who bought it.

Route 66 in a VW Lupo continued after SEMA, back to Arizona, and west into California 💙🇺🇸🦅

The Bagdad was one of the VW highlights of the trip. There was a series of tourist in rental Ford Mustangs, who were great fun to talk to, but it was the VW Touareg V8 Premium on the side of the building that caught my eye.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It belongs to the owners, and although it’s almost 20 years old it’s their daily driver, and just like the Touaregs that I have. I saw they have a headlight missing - with the projector inside still working and held by tape - so I offered to send them a used unit from my parts pile which they gladly accepted.

Then it was on further west, for some of the most expensive fuel of the trip… and Barstow California, and LA.

The wastegate on the gas mask turbo housing is genius, even if I couldn’t picture it fully when we saw the mockups in the summer. Just mindblowing how well it all came together! 👏

I got asked to ship the car from Germamy to the USA for the show, and I’m incredibly happy have helped do so. The car looked amazing on the booth, where it was so exciting to see an old school VW Golf get so much love, and for the brand to flex what they could do with the insane gold plated intercooler setup, mounted between the seats.
