Back in 1955, Pismo Beach was a clammer’s paradise, where locals and visitors alike could dig up their daily limit of 200 clams per person. Before restrictions began in 1911, clams were so plentiful that they were shipped by train and even used as animal feed. But as demand skyrocketed, regulations tightened—by 1947, commercial harvesting was banned, and today, the limit is just 10 clams per person, each at least 4.5 inches long. Thanks to these conservation efforts, Pismo clams—once scarce from overharvesting—are finally returning to local shores.

The Pismo Beach Pier has a long history of resilience against the elements. Originally built in 1924 by the Pismo Beach Pier and Amusement Company, it was dedicated on July 4 of that year, though it wasn’t yet complete. A powerful storm in 1926 damaged the seawall and washed part of the pier into the Wave Motel. Decades later, the storm season of early 1983 battered the coast for six weeks, ultimately breaking off a section of the pier, which floated north before being recovered and stored. By the time the storms ended, the original concrete seawall had lost its footing, leading to the construction of a new pier. In 1985, the rebuilt pier was formally opened in a dedication ceremony, marking its completion and return to public use. Today, the pier remains a beloved landmark, hosting events, ceremonies, Fourth of July fireworks, and surf contests.

A Historic Arrival, A Fiery Aftermath – In one of the biggest events San Luis Obispo had ever seen, President Roosevelt sent his Great White Fleet to the California coast in 1908, drawing massive crowds. It was a moment of celebration, patriotism, and naval pride. But in the years that followed, the same shores that had welcomed warships would become the site of tragedy, as oil tank fires raged through Port San Luis, filling the sky with thick, suffocating smoke. A town that once gathered to celebrate now gathered to watch destruction unfold.

Throwing it back to the days of abalone harvesting in Avila Beach. The Benton brothers, Ted and Bob, worked these waters with their boats, Vaminos and Muy Pronto, hauling in massive loads of the prized gastropod. Swipe to see Betty Benton and her daughter by a towering pile of abalone shells at Port Harford Wharf (now Port San Luis Pier). A glimpse into a once-thriving industry that helped shape the Central Coast.
