Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is the precursor to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and it is the newest trend in cannabis extracts. THCA is not intoxicant as THC, but it converts to it through heat treatment undergoing the decarboxylation process. This compound has multiple benefits, and it may open new doors for the cannabis industry.

Why THCA over THC extracts

THCA extracts have a higher purity, no smell, and more versatility in terms of how it can be utilized compared to THC containing extracts. [1] THCA may have many health benefits including brain protective in the treatment for Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, anti-inflammatory properties, anti-tumor, appetite stimulant and anti-insomnia among others. Nevertheless more studies and clinical trials should be done in order to assess THCA potential. [2] Overall, THCA has similar benefits to THC, but without the undesired psychotropic effect.

Distillation of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) leads to one of the most potent cannabis products on the market. However, pure THC distillate lacks all but THC. In other words, it’s missing many but not all of the desirable characteristics of cannabis plants, such as taste and smell. Fortunately, distillate manufacturers and even consumers can remedy this by adding back to the distillate what was lost.

Terpenes and THC Distillation

Cannabis terpenes are chemical compounds that produce the smells and tastes consumers find pleasing. They also have powerful medicinal properties and have attracted the attention of the pharmaceutical and health industries for their medical potential.

Solventless concentrates are quickly becoming the new gold standard in the cannabis extracts niche. It’s one of those fairly rare cases of simplicity meeting luxury.
According to BDSA, a cannabis market analyst firm, in the first quarter of 2018, there were only 4 rosin v**e cartridge products sold in Colorado. Fast forward to the first quarter of 2021, and they became 160. That’s a 40-fold increase in 3 years!
The same trend can be observed in California, going from 16 to 28 products in the same period. The reasons behind the rapid rise in solventless concentrates’ popularity are a few.
Safety and Purity
This is the first and most obvious one. In fact, it’s perfectly logical not just within the cannabis world, but the worlds of wellness, foods and drinks as a whole in which safety and purity are becoming a bigger priority as a result of our increased access to information on health and the hazards to it.

09/26/2022

Typically cannabis potency is determined by the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, the main psychotropic cannabis constituent, going from 4% in the 80’s up to highly concentrated products like shatter, oil or edibles containing even 95% THC. Nevertheless THC is not the only responsible for the potency of a cannabis variety. It is a common mistake that people consider the THC content strictly and directly related to the healing capabilities of cannabis, but it should be noticed that the effects depend on the overall plant composition: cannabis produces hundreds of different compounds including various phytocannabinoids, terpenoids, sterols and flavonoids. The synergistic effect of all the cannabis constituents is called “entourage effect” and it was first postulated by Mechoulam and Ben-Shaba in 1998. [1] According to their hypothesis, the action of major active cannabinoids can be enhanced by other minor cannabis constituents which contribute both in the sense of additional therapeutic effect or in enhancing the premeability of cannabinoids in human tissues. [2] There is evidence that a full-spectrum cannabis extract has more effect compared to a purified single cannabinoid.

As the delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-8) market continues to grow, customers are beginning to put an emphasis on quality. [1] Live resin extract is a product that not only preserves terpene profiles of cannabis plants, but it can be made in order to contain high levels of THC-8.

What is Live Resin Extraction?

During traditional extraction, cannabis is dried, and often heated, leading to degradation of many thermolabile compounds such as terpenes. Instead, live resin extraction relies on freezing the plant material right after the harvesting and using cold solvents to perform the extraction in order to keep the plant composition closer to its original natural state.

In recent years the cannabis industry has exploded and one of the products quickly gaining popularity is cannabis resin which is a concentrate. [1] Cannabis concentrates are available in many colors, chemical profiles, and consistencies.

Unsurprisingly, understanding what cannabis resin is can be challenging since there are different types. In our article, we’ll discuss the difference between live resin and cured resin to better understand which is right for you.

Before identifying what live resin and cured resin are and the difference between the two, we want to briefly detail what exactly resin is. In the case of cannabis, resin is a blanket term for concentrates. A resin is typically a waxy and sticky substance that is produced by the trichomes of a cannabis plant. A cultivator will extract the resin from cannabis plant’s trichomes, the tiny frost-like crystals found on a bud.

pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, but how does it affect phytochemical stability? We know that the lower the pH, the more acidic the solution, and the higher the pH, the more basic or alkaline the solution. These changes in pH can have a significant effect on plant phytochemicals.

Phytochemicals are naturally occurring compounds that are found in plants, responsible for their organoleptic properties and resistance against bacteria, fungi, pests and environmental stress. Some phytochemicals also have important health benefits and are commonly used as active pharmaceutical ingredients to treat various issues and diseases. For example, some phytochemicals act as antioxidants, protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals.

The stability of phytochemicals during the extraction process is affected by many factors, including pH.

09/21/2022

Pressure is extremely important in the extraction and refinement processes of organic materials, including Cannabis derived products. Cannabis contains over 400 chemical entities, with 80-100 of those being cannabinoids. [1] Consuming unrefined Cannabis will thus expose consumers to all 400 of these chemicals, some of which may have desirable effects and some of which may be toxic. [2] Therefore, laboratory methods to extract desired compounds and refine them can help ensure a purer product. Pure, refined products are not only important to ensure reliability in research efforts on Cannabis products, they also help protect the users from undesired exposures to toxic solvent residues, pesticides, heavy metals etc.

There are numerous ways to extract cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), or other classes of compounds like terpenes or flavonoids from Cannabis plants. The most popular techniques involve using solvents to extract the desired plant components and then ev***rating the solvent away, thus leaving the desired extract. Many laboratories use supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2 ) with properties between a liquid and gas: in this state CO2 expands like a gas to fill its container, while also keeping the density of a liquid. The critical point in the case of CO2 is reached at 31.1 °C and 73.8 bar.

The pH level shows the acidity or basicity of a particular aqueous solution and represents the logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen cations in a solution. In relation to cannabis, the pH spectrum levels affect nutrient availability and the overall health and structure of the plant.

Where should cannabis soil fall on the pH scale?

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 as the middle value corresponding to a neutral pH. When it comes to determining which end of the pH scale a compound lies there are two extremes: values that are higher than 7.0 are considered alkaline or basic, while those lower than 7.0 are acids. [1] The typical pH range that cannabis was found to thrive was determined typically as anywhere from 4.0 to 7.0. However researchers at North Caroline State University (NCSU) did find that “cannabis is not prone to iron deficiencies when the substrate pH nears 7.0”. [2]

As the botanical extraction market grows and becomes increasingly competitive, manufacturers look for new ways to increase extraction efficiency and yield. A botanical extraction business hinges on the ability to extract as many of the desired botanical compounds from the plant material without degrading or compromising them. Most of this comes down to the extraction conditions, solvent and the used technique.

While research is generally being conducted on specific plants and compounds, there is progress being made into understanding which conditions are ideal for maximum extraction yields. Researchers have found that pH does play a significant role in how effective a solvent is at extracting the desired compounds.

09/16/2022

Once a process has been tested, approved and optimized, the upscaling consists in various steps before the plant is set up. After a laboratory scale machinery, a pilot plant is built in order to confirm the measures and data collected for the large scale production. [1] The implementation of a novel processing technology needs a science-based approach where all the process aspects and risks are evaluated in a laboratory environment to predict the large-scale industrial process behavior

Detailed knowledge of chemical engineering is required in order to scale-up a chemical process, nevertheless in the case of heated liquid phase batch reaction and certain processing steps, a five-step procedure can be adopted to go industrial scale production.

Synthetic compounds are commonly used as food additives and in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, but safety concerns may be linked to them. [1] Phytochemicals are a suitable alternative to synthetically produced molecules, but they need to be properly isolated from the plant source in efficient and safe ways: researchers are continuously looking at implementing botanicals extraction in the attempt to optimize the process and obtaining high-quality extracts. [2]

As highlighted in a recent study investigating the methodology and optimization of phytochemical extraction from the plant Thymelaea hirsute L., [3] various factors can affect the quality and yield of the final extract:

09/09/2022

Supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) can be used as solvent for the extraction of active compounds from botanical sources. Plant material is ground to a desired particle size and placed into the extraction chamber of a closed loop system. The solvent is held to or above its critical pressure and temperature, 72.8 atm and 31 °C respectively, reaching its supercritical state and behaving in the middle of a gas and a liquid. Passing through the extraction chamber, the supercritical CO2 will extract plant constituents. The relatively low operating pressure and temperature allow the extraction of thermolabile molecules without altering the extract composition and the modulation of the operating parameters permits the selective extraction of different compounds. [1] An extract obtained with supercritical CO2 can keep a very similar composition to the one present in the original plant substance, keeping also the full spectrum of scents and flavors: the whole plant terpenic fraction extracted with supercritical CO2 remains intact and unlike other extraction methods, it is possible to keep in the final product even low molecular weight terpenes which contribute to the overall benefit of the plant extract.

09/08/2022

The majority of techniques used to extract cannabidiol (CBD) from h**p involve the use of solvents. Nowadays one of the most common method for extracting CBD rely on supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2). Supercritical fluids are somewhere between liquid and gas states. The “critical point” of CO2, the point above which it reaches the supercritical state, is 31 °C and 1,070 psi. [1]

To extract CBD, h**p is placed in a vacuum chamber/extractor, which is then filled with CO2. When pressure is applied to the chamber, the CO2 turns to liquid, and this liquid absorbs the h**p constituents, including CBD. CO2 is then removed from the extract releasing the pressure and it is then recicled and recondensed to be used again for another extraction. Although this process is safe and produces good yields of CBD, the remaining CBD is often not alcohol free if the process is preformed with a co-solvent like ethanol. The resulting CBD containing extract can be further refined to create CBD isolate or distillate. In general it is important to avoid solvent residues in the final extract because these could be harmful if above the safe limits and could reduce the overall product quality.

The therapeutic potential of psychedelic substances like psilocybin and psilocin are continuing to become more widely known. The Biden administration has already mentioned to the press that it anticipates psilocybin and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (M**A) will most likely be approved by the FDA as treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within the next two years. [1]

Decriminalization efforts in the United States are removing barriers to access. Campaigns to increase public awareness of different psychedelic therapies are piquing interest. All of this together is driving a wave of innovation throughout the psychedelic, medical, and scientific communities.

Various psilocybin and psilocin extraction techniques already exist. Water extraction was a popular method before better ways to extract the psychoactive substances from magic mushrooms were found. Methanol and ethanol extraction techniques were previously found to provide higher yields.

n the ever-evolving 21st century, botanical extraction processes have matured to the point where botanical and plant matter can be easily extracted in many different ways for a number of different end-products in a rather quick period of time. Just browse the many articles in this blog alone to get an idea of the advancements and technologies that currently constitute the industry as a whole. It’s exciting to see the evolution of the processes and how far they’ve advanced from the days of techniques such as enfleurage that is an age-old means of plant oil extraction.

Arcaic extraction

Used as a means by ancient Egyptians to obtain fragrances from flower petals, enfleurage (a name later derived by the French, meaning “to saturate with the perfume from flowers”) is a more-delicate method of extracting the essences of certain flowers so as to not destroy their biomass during the process. Flowers such as rose, jasmine, violet, and daffodils among others contain so many desirable natural scents, but are just too fragile and full of thermolabile products to be heated. That’s where enfleurage and its room temperature application of animal fat as a solvent comes into play.

Cold Pressed Extraction is the process of using mechanical force to extract essential oils from plant materials. As the name suggests, this is a “cold process” requiring little to no heat. Consequently, it’s a method that preserves heat-labile compounds such as low-molecular weight terpenes.
For this reason and for the fact that it doesn’t involve any solvent, this method is gaining popularity in the cannabis world.

How is cold press extraction performed?

Cold pressing involves using mechanical force for extraction. Traditionally, this was carried out by hand. That meant using specialized sponges to “squeeze out” essential oils from the plant material. Things have changed and now there are specialized devices for cold pressing.

To make an example, when it comes to citruses the whole fruit is placed in the extraction device and the process begins with abrasion and laceration to break down the citrus peel matter. Hence, cold press extraction has earned itself the moniker “scarification.” It is then followed by centrifuging to separate the compounds by weight.

Interest in all types of cannabidiol (CBD) products has skyrocketed in recent years, with millions of people willing to try CBD products. According to 2022 statistics, it’s believed that although 22% of people say they don’t trust CBD, 68% have said that they use it and find it effective for their needs. [1]

Almost everywhere you go, you will likely come across a CBD product, whether it be an oil, a balm, a tincture, a drink, or a packet of gummies. Yet, even though CBD is becoming easily recognizable for the most part, many people still don’t quite know what the difference is between a tincture and a distillate.

Many know that CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have to be extracted and distilled from cannabis. [2] The extraction process is complex, but once the extraction has occurred, a tincture is produced, and through a distillation refinement is possible to create a distillate. Surprisingly, despite appearing to be similar, a tincture and distillate are two wholly different.

There are many different types of plants that can be used for distillation. Some plants work better than others, and some have additional benefits beyond just the distillation process. Here is a look at some of the best plants for distillation, and what makes them so special.
Rosemary
Rosemary is a great plant for distillation because of its high essential oil content. This means that more of the volatile compounds in the plant will be extracted during the distillation process, resulting in a better final product. Additionally, rosemary has a wide range of benefits for both your health and your home.
Lavender
Lavender is another plant with a high essential oil content, making it ideal for distillation. It also reportedly has a calming effect, which can be beneficial if you are looking to create a relaxing atmosphere in your home. Lavender is also known for its ability to repel insects, making it a good choice if you want to keep your home free of pests.

Herbal extracts are more popular now than ever, but the art and science of extracting them goes back hundreds of years. When extracting herbal compounds, your goal is to both preserve the integrity of what was in the plant and avoid adding chemicals which can contaminate the finished product. In short, you want to get the desired extracts out of the plant without changing much else. It’s a simple concept, but it’s usually easier said than done.

Fortunately, this ancient problem has an equally time-tested solution that’s both simple and relatively efficient. Steam distillation is a fairly basic form of distillation that can be done with relatively low-tech equipment. However, with the benefit of modern technology, it can be made much more efficient, increasing yields and producing a high-purity product.

However, such DIY cannabis enthusiasts are often in for a rude awakening, just like fight sports fans who confuse watching fighting for actual fighting. There are so many little details that go into both fighting and extraction science.

With that being said, cold extraction really is that simple, and more importantly, safe, on virtually all levels. There’s nothing volatile about the process and there’s nothing toxic about the end product, with the exception of potential mold, which you can eliminate singlehandedly. The biggest risk involved is wasting some cannabis in the process of trial and error.

Through steam distillation is possible to separates volatile and non-volatile compounds from a plant matrix. This kind of distillation can be used when the boiling point of the extracted substance is higher than that of water. Moreover this method generally avoid the degradation of thermolabile products contained in the starting material.

In the steam distillation process, water is poured into a flask connected to a condenser: while non-volatile compounds stay in the boiling flask, volatiles are carried through another recipient by the v***r forming a distinct phase after the condensation. [2]

The distillation process gives us essential oils and herbal distillates which are acqueous co-products also known as hydrosols, hydrolates or essential waters. While essential oils will float to the top of the distillate, what stays behind is the watery distillate. These are less concentrated than essential oils and can be more suitable for some topical uses without need of further dilution in a carrier oil or creme: generally there is 1% of essential oil in the herbal distillate and these can be used by pregnant women and children too and they can be .

The recovering of phenolic compounds from plant extracts is particularly important due to their natural antioxidant activity, UV-protection properties and antimicrobial activity. Polyphenols are plant secondary metabolites abundant in fruits, cereals and vegetables. There are different classes of polyphenolic compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, stilbenes, and lignans. The great diversity in polarity, polymerization, conjugation and matrix interactions changes with plant maturation, environmental parameters (climate, soil quality, topography) and cultivar. [1]

The large use in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food supplement industries encourages the advancements of polyphenolics extraction techniques in order to succesfully isolate them. [2] Polyphenolic compounds are generally high molecular weight molecules responsible for the colour, bitterness, oxidative stability, astringency of plants and they contribute to plant protection and defence against pathogens and environmental changes.

When extracting botanical material, the basic steps are generally the same. [1] The plant material is gathered, a solvent is chosen, the extraction method is then implemented. When choosing a solvent, this is where the largest potential for variation occurs. Based on the type of compounds to be extracted and the extraction technique various solvents provide several advantages and disadvantages.

Ethanol

Ethanol is one of the most commonly used solvent for extraction of botanicals. Ethanol can be used to extract both hydrophilic and lipophilic substances. It can be used for large scale extractions, where it is possible to obtain thousands of pounds of biomass extraction per hour. [2] When compared to other solvents, ethanol is cheaper and provide high yields. One of the greatest hazards of ethanol is its high flammability.
