Robert Smith opened up about the notorious stance he took against predatory ticketing practices for The Cure‘s North America Tour last year, recalling his goals to keep tickets cheap as well as his viral Twitter threads calling out the ticketing business from Ticketmaster to scalpers to other artists.

“It was one of those moments I thought, ‘No, I’m not letting this go,’” Smith told the New York Times in an interview on Friday. “And so I didn’t.”

Smith’s strategy remains the gold standard for how artists can keep concert tickets affordable.

ROBERT SMITH contemplates his own demise.

In a recent interview with Matt Everitt, Smith revealed that The Cure’s upcoming album “Songs of a Lost World” was created during a period of grief after Smith’s parents and older brother passed away. This forced Smith to come to terms with the fact that he is getting older himself.

“Death and dying becomes more [prevalent] every day, unfortunately. When you’re younger you romanticise it. Then it starts happening to your immediate family and friends. Then it’s a different thing,” Smith said.

He went on to explain that the title “Songs of a Losts World” came from a sense that humanity peaked in the mid-1970s and has been going downhill ever since. He reflected on when he was 10-years-old and watched the moon landing:

“I still feel like that 10-year-old kid staring at the moon,” Smith explained. “The world seemed to stall at that moment. I grew up in the glorious 30 years from the end of the second World War. The world I was born into was getting incrementally better. It seemed it was on an upward trajectory. The moon landing was part of that. I turned 16 in 1975, and it seemed like the world stalled and it’s been travelling down ever since. That’s the core … that’s the beating heart of the album.”
