About “Portals & Passages: An evolution of paintings, sculptures, and social magic.”
Portals and Passages is a reflection point, weaving together Laurus’ portfolio of work across disciplines. From vivid colors, patterns, and layered paintings evolving into sculptural forms, Myth leans into art to tell stories of connection and relationship. Myth’s visual language is influenced by nature, technology, and intuition as they use symbols to decode their experience. Portals and Passages transforms Triton’s Warburton Gallery with works that draw viewers through moments of connection. This expansive body of work bridges dualities: technology-nature, movement-stillness, internal-external, and day-night.

Artist Statement:
Laurus Myth is an Asian-American interdisciplinary artist raised in Silicon Valley. A born innovator, Myth follows a creative and intuitive path as she fabricates and curates intentional spaces. Drawn to sacred architecture and mental landscapes, her work is colorful, symbolic, and deeply immersive.

Pastoral Light offers a vibrant, contemporary reimagining of the rural landscape, blending the timeless tranquility of nature with the bold energy of modern abstraction. Influenced by 19th-century masters such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Thomas Cole, Faulkner interprets their classical traditions through a dynamic, abstract sensibility evocative of the more contemporary approaches of Wolf Kahn and Richard Diebenkorn. By blending these influences with his artistic vision, Faulkner’s newest series of “light paintings” explores a fresh take on this historic genre.

“For centuries, artists have depicted pastoral landscapes as serene, idyllic spaces,” Faulkner explains. “In this series, I aim to challenge and expand that tradition by blending the timeless beauty of these scenes with the dynamic energy and complexity of today’s world. Through abstraction, unexpected colors, and bold compositions, I seek to honor this legacy while reshaping it into something uniquely contemporary.”

Join Mitra Fabian for the opening of her solo exhibition, “Seeping Through Domestic Dissonance,” at .

Saturday, January 25, 2025, 3p-5p
106 E. Main Street Los Gatos, CA

Step into an immersive, strange yet familiar world in Mitra Fabians’s Seeping Through Domestic Dissonance. This mixed-media installation reflects on Mitra’s experience with the CZU fires, the natural world, climate change, and human interference. Guests will hear from the artist and get a first look at the exhibition.

In Seeping Through Domestic Dissonance, on view from January 24 through May 18, 2025, Mitra Fabian creates a surreal and somber mixed-media installation that intersects the natural world, built environments, climate change, and human interference. This project will include Fabian’s recognizable organic sculptural forms and the use of resistors, capacitors, and diodes. But it will also reveal animal elements and a wooden shelter ravaged by fire. This installation is an immersive, contemplative conglomeration of her six years living in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where she and her wife encountered first-hand experiences of the CZU fires, catastrophic rain, wind, and downed trees. Concepts around the wildland-urban interface and diminishing animal habitat also play essential roles in this exhibition.

William Johnston is a genre-defying multi-instrumentalist from San Jose. Having played renowned venues such as Great American Music Hall and the Chapel, his show at the SJZ Break Room promises to be a redefining moment in his musical journey, featuring additional players and never-before-heard songs.

Johnston’s candid and delicate vocals float over a bed of his signature greasy rhythm guitar, creating a truly timeless experience. A 2021 Jazz Aid Fund awardee, his music is an original synthesis of many things, including the wry wit of Steely Dan, the rhythmic elegance of traditional Brazilian and Cuban music, and the folky R&B of Al Green.

Join This Saturday for the opening of “Shapeshifters,” a solo exhibition featuring works by Mark Engel, .

Saturday, Jan 11th, 4p to 7p
592 N 5th Street, SJ

Mark Engel is a contemporary artist who navigates the boundaries between the material and the spiritual through his layered and fragmented figures. His paintings highlight how individual experiences, emotions, and connections contribute to an inherently fluid and transient identity.

Mark grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and received his MFA from San Jose State University. His work has been shown in numerous museums and galleries across the US and is in many private collections.

Rooted in transformation, my work examines identity as a fluid construct, reflecting the ever-changing motion of selfhood. I create figures in a state of perpetual flux, shaped by the interplay of external forces and internal experiences. These figures embody the evolving nature of the human self as it adapts and changes over time. My work invites viewers into a realm where the boundaries of the self are porous, unveiling the intricate beauty and complexity of human existence as a constantly shifting mosaic.

Featured Issue 17.1, “Discover,” King157, @1984.yo

Check out King’s latest mural in downtown San José at South First Street and San Salvador, on the south side of .

Local San José graffiti artist King157 has been displaying his heart and soul on walls and trains for over 40 years. He is known for the clean, thin, and complex lines in his lettering, the use of vibrant colors, and b-boy and b-girl characters that harken back to 1970s comic characters Puck and Cheech Wizard.

Though he has witnessed the evolution of graffiti over the past 40 years, King still believes it hasn’t found its proper respect as an art form among the general public. “I represent the old school, using the gift I was given to produce high-quality professional graffiti art…and yes, that name will always be associated with the word ‘outlaw.’”

On View through 3/15/25

The painting exhibition “My Memories of Old Beijing” brings together the evocative works of four esteemed artists from Beijing: Wang Yuping, Zhao Zhunwang, Kao Yi-Feng and Yu Chung-Hsin.
