The Mariana Trench is located in the western Pacific Ocean, east of the Philippines and south of Japan. Its deepest point, the Challenger Deep, is 10,916 metres (35,814 ft) below sea level, making it the deepest known place on Earth. The trench is located about 200 kilometres (125 mi) southwest of Guam, the nearest main island and part of the Mariana Islands. It is about 2,500 kilometres (1,550 mi) from Manila, the capital of the Philippines. The Mariana Trench was formed by the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Mariana Plate and is part of the geologically active Ring of Fire. Due to its extreme depth and enormous pressure, it remains one of the least explored places in the world.
