We are closely monitoring smoke as a result of Several bushfires burning across Victoria.

Over the next several days winds are expected out of the Southwest taking the smoke well away from Tasmania.

These Bushfires are expected to burn for weeks so the risk of smoke and reduced air quality will continue to be monitored.

Please if you are prone to asthma make sure you continue to monitor conditions and keep medications close by should air quality get worse.

There are currently no significant Bushfires burning in Tasmania.

Public health warning – do not swim in certain locations of the Derwent River.

A failure of a biological treatment process at TasWater’s wastewater treatment plant at Cameron Bay has resulted incomplete treatment of effluent being discharged into the Derwent River near Berriedale, and the potential to cause environmental harm and nuisance.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is working with TasWater and Public Health Services to manage and resolve the incident.

Public Health advises the public do not swim in the Derwent River.

This applies to between Austins Ferry and Old Beach in the north to Sandy Bay across to Howrah in the south.

Sewage in water used for recreational activities like swimming poses a risk to health from viruses and bacteria.

These risks can include gastroenteritis (diarrhoea or vomiting) and infections of the skin, ears or eyes.

This will apply until further notice and advice is deliberately cautious.

Advice will be updated once further water testing is completed to confirm the safety of swimming sites.

Public Health will provide updates when they are available.

People with health concerns should seek advice from their local health professional such as their General Practitioner or Community Pharmacist.

Late December snow but no white Christmas this year.

Nick@tasweatherwatch

The silly season is in full swing; even the weather seems to have indulged in too many rum balls, as it’s spinning out all kinds of weather patterns like that awkward tipsy partygoer at the Christmas party.

Late Sunday a cold front is expected to dash across the State bringing cooler West to Southwesterly flow in it’s take further enhanced with a more broad and deep low that’s expected to form in the Southern Tasman sea Monday.

Light snowfall is anticipated at elevations exceeding 1100m to 1200m on Sunday evening, extending overnight into Monday morning, particularly in the regions of the West, Central Plateau, Ben Lomond, and the Southern peaks.

Snow won’t last long and a white Christmas is unlikely!

With the ground sufficiently warmed and temperatures rising, any snow that managed to settle is expected to melt rapidly by Monday morning. Tuesday and Christmas Day we should see Temperatures increase back into the Low to Mid 20s across the state.

Has it snowed on Christmas day?

Well yes here’s one news article i found:

December 25th 2006: Snowfall was reported on the summit of Mt Wellington as reported by ABC News: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2006-12-26/tasmanians-enjoy-white-christmas/2161310?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_news_web

While I’m confident this isn’t the only instance of snow on Christmas Day, please share any others I’ve overlooked!
