We were THRILLED to make this epic music video for Chris Boshuizen's song The Great Unknown but admittedly a bit trepidatious when it came to putting this Behind-the-Scenes Featurette together. Ultimately it came out great and tells the very fun and real story of how the music video came to be. But let me once again reiterate that there's a reason we're on "this" side of the camera and pay our respect to the many people we've interviewed in our career. It ain't easy being on "that" side of it! 😆

Prepping and testing for our first 16mm shoot in over a decade. We miss feeling the film in our hands - been a moment since we’ve had our hands in a changing bag, but it was just like riding a bike again, muscle memory kicked in. Super excited about this project.

Working in the heat to capture interviews, drone and b-roll for a company branding video.

We used a 12x12 with a 1/4 grid to shape our only source of light. This enabled us to create a soft light on our talent and keep the sunny background exposed.

Capturing slider and drone b-roll down at Google early this morning. Using drones in this area is an incredible challenge due to the location’s proximity to a federal/NASA airfield - it’s a STRICT no-fly zone. Clearance takes some time, a lot of paperwork and skilled licensed 107 pilots to be able to get approved to fly. The 7am flight was well worth the work and provided beautiful shots to work with.

Pictures is DP capturing a new art installation on the C300MK3 with Zeiss primed on a Dana Dolly.

for the first episode from season 4 of featuring … We chose to film in San Francisco as it had the ideal setup for the show. We wanted the show to have a natural look as if it was filmed in a home instead of a studio. Cinematographer devised the lighting setup which consisted of an .lighting 1200D in a book light setup for overall fill, and a side key from a 600D motivated by a fake window where we used new ellipsoidal light projecting on the background. A 2L’s were used as backlight and additional front fill.

We had a blast putting this together and can’t wait to release more episodes. Check out the full version on YouTube and be sure to follow for more updates.

Sometimes the architecture of a location does the lighting for you. After scouting for the best angle and setting up the camera you notice the white building outside the window on camera right is creating a nice soft key light. The fill side already has nice contrast and the depth on camera left provided great background separation. It ended up being a really nice shot with no lighting or grip equipment needed. We of course had gear just in case, but sometimes it works out.

3 Point lighting without any lights (besides the BIG light in the sky). Sometimes it’s less about the lighting units you use, and how you control the light you have. For this setup, DP used a silk to soften the harsh sunlight as the key, a flag to add negative fill for contrast and a small silver bounce board for a backlight/kicker.

One of the benefits of companies working on a hybrid model is that it allows us to schedule filming on days when the offices aren’t crowded. This open ups our options for setups and allows us to actually use the depth of the offices without disturbing everyone’s work day. The shots are way more dynamic when you’re not limited to a small conference room or back corner. Having room allowed us to setup an .lighting 600D through a 6x6 silk and bleached muslin. Sometimes finding the right location can be challenging when filming for corporate clients. Office spaces can be visually boring. While we were loading in we came across this sky bridge and thought it would be a perfect location for this interview video. The background added visual interest to keep the viewer engaged. Since it was already pretty bright outside, we only added two bare 6x Astras to balance the subjects with the background. Filmed on two cameras with Canon zoom lenses.
