Master of Arts in Urban and Public Affairs

University of San Francisco

The University of San Francisco is currently recruiting candidates for our interdisciplinary MA program in Public Policy, Urban Studies, and Practical Politics.

Urban and Public Affairs is an innovative, interdisciplinary graduate program that blends urban studies and public policy, preparing students for careers in government, non-profit organizations, and the private sector. Students participate in the policy process while they study.

What we offer:

· Access to cutting-edge researchers from academic disciplines like urban studies, politics, sociology, geography, and urban planning;

· Hands-on training with high-level practitioners from government, community-based organizations, private industry, and the non-profit sector;

· Practical experience in community-engaged projects and internships linked to a range of policy topics;

· A community of student and faculty who are exceptionally committed to careers as effective leaders in urban policy and community advocacy.

The University of San Francisco’s strong emphasis on social justice permeates every aspect of the UPA program and empowers students to positively contribute to our communities. Now is the time to apply for Fall 2019.

Here is a brand new class that may be of interest to many on this list.
Dear students and colleagues,

We’re writing to tell you about an exciting NEW class in the department of Criminal Justice Studies, CJ 535: Alternatives to Criminalization, and to ask for your help in getting the word out to interested students.

Our course examines the causes and consequences of criminalization with a focus on alternative responses that improve safety and build community capacity without the use of police, jails or prisons. We will study transformative solutions including harm reduction, restorative justice, and grassroots community organizing.

This class includes weekly guest speakers from local social movement organizations so it’s a great way to connect with local orgs for students who are interested in social services, activism, nonprofit work, or the legal field. Those who are concurrently enrolled in senior capstone courses can get credit for optional internships.

Some topics this class will cover include:

· Alternatives to the criminalization of youth

· Border policing and the movement against the criminalization of immigrants

· Community organizing against police violence

· The War on Drugs and alternatives to the criminalization of drug use

· Alternatives to the policing of s*x and gender (for people interested in fighting back against criminalization of transgender & s*x worker communities)

· Gang injunctions

· Movements against the criminalization of poverty & homelessness.

The 3-credit class meets only one day a week, on Fridays, in the fall semester. We’ll have class discussions of the readings with either Professor Dilara Yarbrough or Professor Ché Rodriguez from 4-4:45 pm, and guest lectures from 5-6:30 pm (although we have access to the lecture hall for a bit longer in case folks want to talk informally with our guest speakers). This is primarily an undergraduate class, although we can work with your M.A. or M.S.W. advisers to help you fit this into your program.

Please circulate this message widely, and email us if you have questions: [email protected] or [email protected]

symposium on self-care and community building

Free and lunch provided

The symposium will highlight the significance of community building and organizing by destigmatizing conversations around mental health. This event provides a safe space for students of different cultures to share their stories and/or research of mental health issues and wellness. After the event, students will have the tools to empower their families, peers, communities, and themselves to address mental health.
