San Francisco DJ for over 18 years. Growing up, if you wanted to find Dicky at a Rave, all you had to do was check out the DJ booth. Errrr….next to the DJ booth.
Studying which k***s were being tweaked and when the needle was getting dropped, he slowly worked out the basics of how to spin records and the seeds of mixing music were planted. Trouble was he didn't have any equipment. Or money. Flash forward 10 years, he moved to San Francisco, was thrown behind turntables for a monthly party at The Transfer (RIP), and was officially bitten by the DJ bug; gett
ing residencies at The Lone Star Saloon, Lazybear Week, Western Xposure, KumaSF, Bo**ie Mashup SF, and Bearracuda traveling all over the country playing parties. 17+ years of playing Disco, Bass House, Deep House, Tech House, Mashups, and Techno; anything as long as it gets people moving.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, and one of the things I’ve finally decided to pull the trigger on is changing my DJ name.
Boyshapedbox just doesn’t fit me anymore. It’s never really gained any clout, the story behind it starts with “back when I started my LiveJournal after High School…” and it just doesn’t describe anything about ME. It doesn’t sound fun, or silly, or envoke dancing, so…I’ve changed it.

A fantastic article about the musical pioneer, Tom Moulton, the man responsible for the "Extended Disco Remix." He was the first to take 3-4 minute songs, extract and loop their intro/breakdown/grooves, then use those loops to extend the beginning and ending of the song. That way the song wouldn't abruptly end and clear the dance floor when the next song started playing. With his technique, they now could be overlapped so that the songs would go on an on, building up energy and making it impossible to leave the dance floor. It's a concept that's a no-brainer now and has it's roots in most of the music made today, especially electronic music. With hundreds (if not thousands) of mixes made at his hands, we have so much to thank for this forward thinking music man.

This past weekend, I had the great pleasure of being flown up to Portland to DJ a party. Not just any party but a basement rave. Not just any basement rave but a basement rave with the theme PURE MOODS (like the classic infomercial). And not just any Pure Moods themed basement rave, but one thrown by my lifelong best friend Rob and his lovely housemates. Billowing fabric, inflatable dolphins, Enya lounges, and all night dancing. I DJ'd from 1-3am, and then again from 5-7am. I recorded my first set and here it is! Enjoy! (and if you like it, spread it around!)
