I live in a house outside the city. Recently, I was coming home from work one evening when I saw a woman lying by the roadside, asking for help. She was dressed quite oddly. As I got closer, I noticed she looked like a typical fortune teller from a fair. The woman was pregnant—and in labor. Luckily, I’m a surgeon. Though not an obstetrician, I knew I had to act quickly. Right there on the roadside, I helped her deliver her baby. "Do you have somewhere to go?" I asked, handing her the crying newborn wrapped in a towel I found in my car. She had nowhere to go; she explained that she had run away from a husband who treated her badly. Feeling sorry for her, I offered her a room in my house, as I have a large house where only my six-year-old daughter and I live. My daughter recently broke her leg in a fall from her bicycle and was on bed rest at home, with a nanny looking after her while I worked. The woman, whose name was Miranda, thanked me and gratefully accepted my help. I drove her to my house and showed her a spacious room where she and her baby could stay. I also made sandwiches, and we had dinner together. The next morning, I got up to check on my daughter, but her room was empty. Worried, I began calling her name. There was no answer. "Ugh! You can't be serious! Are you really making her sit here?" Mr. Newman grumbled as he noticed a mother-of-three approaching his seat. "I'm sorry, sir," the flight attendant replied gently. "These seats have been assigned to Mrs. Debbie Brown and her children, and we can't do anything about it." The rich man became even more irritated. What bothered him most was sitting next to a woman he believed didn't belong in business class, given her modest clothing. Mr. Newman couldn't stop complaining throughout the flight until an announcement over the intercom interrupted him. After the standard announcement, the pilot continued speaking. I'd been away on a business trip, and after finishing early, I booked a surprise flight home for my husband, Ben. I imagined his face lighting up when I walked through the door. We hadn't had much "us" time lately, and I wanted to make it special. The house was quiet, just as I'd expected. Assuming Ben was in his office, I stepped into the backyard — then, I FROZE. Near the garden was Ben, frantically shoveling dirt. And in front of him lay a LARGE BLACK EGG. It wasn't like anything I'd ever seen — huge, glossy, and pitch black, like something out of a fantasy movie. I almost laughed, thinking it might be a prank, but Ben's expression stopped me. His hands were shaking, and he looked around nervously. "Ben?" I called softly. He froze, then turned to face me, full of panic. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!" he asked, his voice trembling and loud. "I wanted to surprise you. What's going on? What is… that?" "IT'S NOTHING!" he said quickly, looking away. "Ben, I don't think that's 'NOTHING.' What is it? And why didn't you tell me you were doing this?" His expression faltered. "Trust me. I'm just doing what needs to be done." But my instincts told me something was off. Twenty years of chaos, and I can't even remember what started it. The Rogers family became our mortal enemies the day we moved in, and it's been a nonstop saga of petty warfare ever since. Fences, weather, snarky comments—we fought about everything. It started small: my dad and Mr. Rogers yelling across the yard while my mom played peacemaker with pies and forced compliments about Mrs. Rogers' garden. But then Mrs. Rogers stomped on my mom's roses, and that was the end of diplomacy. Things got ugly fast. Every day was a battle—petty revenge, nasty fights, you name it. Their son Mike turned my school life into a nightmare, and I eventually had to switch schools just to escape. By the time I left home, I swore I'd never look back. But life's funny. When I was 19, a terrible accident left me unable to walk. My mom had passed away years before, so my dad was all I had left. But he was never the loving, supportive type. What he did after my accident, though? It completely destroyed me. He didn't even show up at the hospital until three days later. And when he found out I needed long-term care, his reaction? "She’s over 18, is'’t she? She's an adult, right? So she's not my responsibility anymore. You take her." And just like that, he walked out, leaving the doctors—and me—completely shocked.
