The screening will be followed by a lively conversation between writer and director Mark Decena and NYBG trustee Karen Washington, one of the film’s main characters.

Organized by NYBG’s Humanities Institute in partnership with Kontent Films, this event is free and open to the public.

Karen Washington sits on the Board of Trustees at the New York Botanical Garden and is the board president of Greenworkers Cooperatives, which leads workshops on growing food and food justice across the country. She is also the former president of the New York City Community Garden Coalition and has sat on boards of organizations such as Just Food, WhyHunger, and Farm School NYC.

Mark Decena is a writer, director, and producer of award-winning feature films, television programming, web, and brand films. He is a three-time Sundance alumnus whose work spans from narrative features to documentaries and shorts. Mark’s first feature, *Dopamine*, won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize in 2003 at Sundance. Since then, Decena has built a body of documentary work that spans themes of social justice, sustainable design, and the environment.

6/20/24 UPDATE: Due to the popularity of this event, we will have a stand-by line onsite starting at 6pm for folks who were unable to RSVP due to list capacity. We will release available theater seats to folks in the standby line at 6:55pm!

Event Description:
Bioneers and the David Brower Center present Farming While Black, a Kontent Films production and feature-length documentary film which examines the historical plight of Black farmers in the United States and the rising generation reclaiming their rightful ownership to land and reconnecting with their ancestral roots.

This film screening will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Mark Decena, Director / Writer / Producer of the film and founder of Kontent Films.

The film will be screening under Next City for the EcoMetropolis Film Festival On May 15th. The Film festival tackles the most pressing climate issues of our time - clean energy, land stewardship or sea-level rise. We’re thrilled to announce that Lynn Waymer , our Co-Producer, will be joining at the “Farming While Black” screening at Denton Black Film Festival!

Lynn Waymer brings a wealth of experience, having directed development and ex*****on of communications, community engagement, and social impact strategies. Formerly the Director of Distribution for HBO, Lynn has worked on groundbreaking projects like “The Big Picture: Re-thinking Dyslexia,” “Paper Tigers,” “Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope,” and many more.

With a passion for making a difference, Lynn has collaborated with award-winning documentary film directors and consulted with institutions like The Yale School of Medicine’s Center for Dyslexia & Creativity. Her commitment to national initiatives impacting underserved communities is truly commendable.

Now living in metro-Atlanta with her husband, Lynn dedicates this chapter of her life to making a positive impact through the medium she loves - TV and film.
