In partnership with San Francisco Magazine, weβre proud to present a special interview with Adrian Burrell, who is the cover star of the December 2023 issue.
Adrian Burrell is a storyteller and multidisciplinary artist who uses photography, video, and more to highlight issues of race, class, and intergenerational dynamics.
His work has been featured at film festivals around the country, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has added some of his photographs to its collection.
Burrellβs latest project, a book called βSugarcane and Lightning,β will be released this February.
Early in January of this year, we had the pleasure of interviewing Adrian Burrell at a very special family landmark: his grandmotherβs Victorian-style home in the Lower Bottoms neighborhood of West Oakland.
Meet Adrian Burell!

Have you ever wondered what it was like to grow up in the 1920βs?
This weekβs guest is Anne Marie Bosque Collins, mother of nine children and a retired SFUSD primary grade teacher was born in 1923!
She grew up in the Parkside/Sunset district and attended St. Ceciliaβs and St Brigidβs schools, and enjoyed college at Lone Mountain University.
Her childhood days in the avenues were filled with community and street life, street hockey, go-karts, sliding down the sand dunes, and watching the construction of new houses.
Her coming of age was shaped by Prohibition, the Great Depression and World War II. She saw her children and grandchildren through many cultural phases of San Francisco, and has embraced every moment along the way.
She adores dancing, spending time with children, and continually learning about people around her. In her retirement, she spent time in Europe and joined the Peace Corps. She embodies life long learning and an open minded San Francisco spirit.
You really donβt want to miss this episode. Listen wherever you get your podcasts!
