The Texas Quote of the Day is a story that TOT reader Karen Miller Barnes sent in. It was written by her father, Frank Miller, for a book that he wrote. Apparently, Karen''s grandfather was a man who knew his mules!

"In the spring of 1938 Daddy and Uncle Clyde leased a ranch at Iatan, between Colorado City and Big Spring. They threw the herd together on the big flat just east of the Cedar Crest School. All of us kids were really excited about this because the Miller Brothers had invited the teacher and the entire student body of Cedar Crest (8 kids, mostly Millers) to come have lunch at the chuck wagon. I always enjoyed eating at the wagon because it seemed the food tasted so good. Maybe it was the tin plates. We had fried steak and gravy, red beans, hot sourdough rolls, and stewed dried apples. It was wonderful! Of course, we all rode up to the round-up on our horses and Daddy let us kids hold the herd while the cowboys ate.

Iatan was not much of a town. About all that was there was an oil camp (row houses were workers lived), a little grocery store, filling station, and a post office. We lived in a three-room shack about a mile from there and a half-mile off the highway. There were two classy privies that had been built by the W.P.A. They were set on concrete bases and there was a His and Hers. These were the nicest things about our living arrangements there. There was no water within two miles and so Daddy hauled water with a 500 gallon tank on a wagon from there. He would take the wagon and empty tank down to the windmill and let the mill pump it full and then go back with the mules and bring it up to the house. He had fixed a union and pipe with one faucet coming into the kitchen so he could hook it up to the tank and have at least the convenience of running water in the kitchen.

One morning when he took Barney and Rhodie down to the windmill to get the water wagon, an interesting thing happened. The wind had blown all night and the tank had filled and run over so that the wagon was standing in water about eighteen inches deep. There was a pumper road that came right by the windmill, and as Daddy was wading around in the mud and water to hook the mules to the wagon, a car stopped with a couple of oil field men who were interested in the operation. About the time Daddy got the mules hooked up, one of the men said, "I''ll bet you $10.00 they will never pull it out of that mud hole."

Daddy had great faith in his mules and considered this an insult. His answer was, "I''ll bet you $20.00 that the little mare mule can pull it out of there by herself." The guy said, "You''re on.", so Daddy unhooked Barney and fixed the wagon tongue and doubletree so that Rhodie could pull by herself. Then he walked around beside her, took hold of the reins, and spoke to her. He said, "Take it out of there, girl." Rhodie put her weight into the collar, got low and pulled with all her strength. She rocked the wagon side to side and "took it out of there". Daddy collected his $20.00 from the amazed and awed men and they went on their way. I don''t know what would have happened if Daddy had lost, because I doubt he had $20.00, but he considered it a sure bet because he knew his mules."

Shown here: Barney and Rhodie, mule team.

Thank you, Karen. I love it when y''all write the Texas Quote of the Day!

Note: Iatan, Texas is a ghost town in west Mitchell County, roughly halfway between Sweetwater and Big Spring.

In early 1954, a Supersonic on a Fiat chassis was imported to Chrysler into the United States. Virgil Exner, chief designer, used the vehicle as a base and developed a design for the Chrysler S-19 chassis.

Then, everything was shipped to Ghia in Italy and where the designed body was built. Upon completion, everything was returned to the US and the car was presented as DeSoto Adventurer II on June 16, 1954, at the opening of Chrysler’s Chelsea Proving Grounds (a development and testing site in Chelsea, Michigan). After this premiere, the car was returned to Italy and Ghia exhibited it in Turin and Brussels in 1954. The S-19 chassis was equipped with a DeSoto Red Ram HEMI V8 engine and a two-stage Powerflite automatic. The body, designed by Exner was built by Ghia resembled the supersonic design in the broadest sense. Since the vehicle is much larger than the rest of the Supersonics, the shape had to be adjusted accordingly. It features an Italian style interior. Despite its size, the Adventurer II is only a two-seater. A special feature is the retractable rear window.

You may be thinking that this is yet another photo of a Lamborghini Espada. Nothing wrong with that anyway - they''re another of my favourite cars.

Except this isn''t an Espada; its a Jaguar Pirana (and not a ''Piranha''). Unusually this was actually commissioned by ''The Daily Telegraph'' in 1967 as their idea of an ''ideal car''. Jaguar supplied the drivetrain (from a 4.2 litre E-Type) but the car was designed by Marcello Gandini, the same chap who designed the Espada. However the Pirana was designed a good year before the Espada. In fact Gandini used the original wooden body buck in the construction of the Espada.
Only one was ever made which is a pity as this would have made a very good E-Type Jaguar replacement.

1952 Sears Allstate. There was a recent post of a ''51 Henry which garnered some comments about the version Sears sold as the Allstate so I thought would post this. This is an early ''52 Allstate. Just as the Henry J, the Allstate could be equipped with a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder engine and just as the Henry J the Allstate could be equipped with or without a trunk lid. I know Wikipedia says that Allstates were equipped with a locking glove box but that''s not true. All Allstates were equipped with a glove box but, just like the Henry J, the glove box did not have a lock. Alex Tremulis of Tucker fame was brought in by KF to do the "Make-over" on the Henry J to make it different than the Allstate. Allstates have different grill work, hood ornament and the early ones had tail light lenses which were unique to the Allstate. Any Henry J badging was replaced with "Allstate" badging and all the "K" emblems that identified it as a Kaiser were blanked out. Allstates were equipped with Sears battery, coil, tires, spark plugs and just as the Henry J, heater, radio, signal lights were add-ons and Sears often installed their own. While Allstate cars were listed in the Sears catalog, they could not be purchased through the catalog, you had to go into the store (they were only sold in selected stores in selected states as they were testing the concept) to purchase one. I hope this clears things up.
