Independent, student-run news source for the University of California, San Diego.
Founded in 2015, The Triton is a digital-first, independent, student-run campus newspaper with the goal of covering content relevant to the UCSD community. Created shortly before the defunding of student media at UCSD, The Triton is the sole fully independent student newspaper. In an era where respected journalists are reprimanded for seeking out the truth, we think it’s important than ever to focus on local, laser focused journalism.

“GNX takes a step back from Lamar’s usual hour-long albums with emotionally layered lyricism. Like his fourth studio album, DAMN, GNX is a sequence of mainstream hits with clever and sometimes humorous plays on words.“

On May 16 at 1:00 p.m. approximately 15 UCSD faculty members met outside of Seventh College’s The Bistro dining hall in order to deliver two petitions condemning the police response to the Gaza Solidarity Encampment on May 6 to Chancellor Pradeep Khosla, where they believed his office to be at 3333 North Torrey Pines Court.
United Auto Workers (UAW) 4811 voted to authorize a strike if unfair labor practice charges filed “in response to UC’s actions against peaceful protesters” remain unresolved.
According to a post on X by UAW 4811, “On Friday, the [Executive Board] Eboard will evaluate and announce whether to call the first campus or campuses to Stand Up.”
An internal document obtained by The Triton notes that “the University will explore all available legal options to bring the strike to an end as soon as possible.”

Founded in 2015, The Triton is a digital-first publication created by three disgruntled undergraduates who saw a gap in the information distributed to students, faculty, and staff. While The Daily Californian at UC Berkeley and The Daily Bruin at UCLA each had a staff of hundreds and reach thousands of students daily, no UC San Diego newspaper of a similar scale has existed to cover on campus issues, events, and research.
Since 2015, our staff has grown from an initial three to 60 in 2018. Our coverage has been cited by The New York Times, Quartz, The Union Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, Vice News, The Daily Californian, The Daily Bruin, ABC 10, NBC 7, and Voice of San Diego. In addition to these accomplishments, campus writing courses now use our opinion and news articles as course reference material.
A college newspaper should, like all newspapers, aim to represent its student body and provide a diverse set of voices. A 2015 survey by the American Society of News Editors places the percentage of “minority” journalists at around 12.76 percent. As of 2018, a majority of our staff are women of color. In addition to this, our staff does not just have students who study literature or political science, but also students who study engineering or are pre-med.
Student journalism means holding administrators accountable, having an open conversation about the state of our campus, and rooting out the truth to the best of our ability. For as long as The Triton is around, that’s what we’re going to do.
