Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco, gave a 17-minute homily on Sunday,July 21.

Jesus wept as he looked across the Kedron Valley at the temple in Jerusalem. The people had turned away from their trust in God.

Paul looked at the seaport of Corinth and saw a lot of immorality – drunkenness, prostitution. He said, “Do not become idolators.”
Like those worshipping the golden calf.

We are idolatrous in the modern world. What do you put your trust in?

Father Illo: accept the thorns.

St. Paul’s thorn in his flesh could have been migraine headaches, sexual temptations, insomnia. He begged for relief.
All of us have thorns – suffering that cannot be eliminated. We are also thorns in the sides of others.
Mother Teresa suffered darkness in her life from 1947 onward. She finally realized the darkness in her life was a gift.

Peter Chanel was sent to the Solomon Islands. He never got the language. Father Joseph Illo, pastor of Star of the Sea parish in San Francisco, gave a 13-minute homily on Sunday, July 7. St. Paul's thorn in his flesh could have been migraine

At the Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux, 42-year-old monk Brother Luis Cortez sits behind two computer monitors in his office, busily responding to phone calls while simultaneously checking website analytics. His long black beard falls over the black Champion zip-up hoodie he normally wears over his traditional monastic robe, as he leans into the screen to update the Instagram account and exchange emails with Californians who inquire about spiritual retreats.

When it comes to the hymns sung at Mass for the celebration of America’s Independence Day, some Catholics may feel considerable discomfort. In many places, of course, this pain is mitigated by priests who are not afraid to preach that Catholics today must adopt an attitude toward patriotism and the State which would have been far more familiar to Christians in the Roman Empire than it was to our parents or grandparents in America in the 1940s.

A group of prominent Brits, including the renowned composer Sir James MacMillan whose Stabat Mater was performed in the Sistine Chapel for Vatican dignitaries, have sent a letter to Pope Francis asking him not to further restrict the Latin Mass, The Pillar reports:

“In a letter to the Times of London, published July 3, more than 40 signatories, Catholic and non-Catholic — including Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, human rights activist Bianca Jagger, and opera singer Kiri Te Kanawa — lamented ‘worrying reports from Rome that the Latin Mass is to be banished from nearly every Catholic church.'”

Our great Covid panic may be gone, but the residual effects of the Covid pandemic are still with us. Call it cultural “long Covid,” it seems to be the great “before-after” dividing line, with some still bearing the scars of the trauma that was endured, including those of us who fought for the right to worship when businesses, museums, and tattoo parlors were all allowed to re-open.

In California each county issued its own health orders, including rules regarding houses of worship. In those initial weeks when everything was closed, I asked my priests to leave their churches open during the day so people would at least have access to a sacred space for private prayer. There was no rule in the local order about this, but I was written up in the local media after being accused by city officials of being in violation of the local health order. Apparently our government officials never considered a church building as a sacred space for private prayer, but simply a building in which to conduct a worship service safe from the elements.

….I don’t remember ever having seen a Rupnik mosaic in person, but these mosaics are found on the facades and interior walls of some significant churches across the Catholic world, including the Shrine of John Paul II in Washington, D.C. There was a time in the not-so-distant past when Fr. Marko Rupnik was deemed an artistic genius, organizing colors and textures with his own unique hands into iconic and enchanting depictions of saints, biblical scenes, and Our Lord. As there are calls now to remove his art, some are likening him to Michelangelo or Caravaggio, a flawed man who sinned but created artwork that, when encountered, elevates the human soul.

Today is Gratitude Day. It is the feast of Corpus Christi, the celebration of “Thanksgiving,” the solemnity of the Holy Eucharist, a Greek word that means “thanksgiving” and a divine liturgy that expresses man’s supreme act of gratitude to our Creator and Savior. In the traditional form of the Mass, which I offered this morning, the priest prays these words from Psalm 116: Quid retribuam Domino pro omnibus quae retribuit mihi?

“It’s the love of the story,” Dennis said. “It’s in an outdoor theater, this 5,000-seat amphitheater, it really gets into your blood when you go outdoors and do this play. They have a few hundred people in the show, we have Native American dancers, Spanish dancers, we have cowboys, and you’re outdoors in this beautiful setting so it just becomes a part of life and the people and the community. I think that’s why its been going on since 1923. When you do it, you just keep on doing it.”

“Not everyone in the cast is Catholic."From April 20 through May 5, the Ramona play returned to the Ramona Bowl Amphitheatre in Hemet for its 101st year. Two local Catholics, husband and wife Dennis and Kathi Anderson, have been an instrumental part of

"The chaplains cannot in good conscience erase the name of Jesus from their prayers."
A California city has been accused of wrongfully ordering two chaplains to stop praying in the name of Jesus Christ, which a legal group argues violates their religious freedom.

The First Liberty Institute sent a complaint letter to the Carlsbad City Council on Tuesday regarding the City Manager Scott Chadwick allegedly ordering fire chaplain Denny Cooper and police chaplain J.C. Cooper to stop praying in Jesus’ name.

May 13 marks 107 years that the Mother of God came from heaven to console three very poor children. If this sounds like a fairy tale to you, it sounds like a fairy tale to me as well. Therefore, all the more do I wonder at what actually happened in a farming village of Portugal in 1917. It would be a fairy tale except for the fact that 70,000 people, including the most convinced secularist news reporters (notably the Lisbon daily O Seculo), saw and felt events that everyone could only describe as “supernatural.” The Lady, so the children said, would provide a “great sign” that would convince most people that she was from God, and that is what happened on October 17, 1917.

"The Church is much stronger in poorer countries , in Africa." (Reuters)Watch Mary Rose and Father Illo talk about the Church of the Poor May 13 marks 107 years that the Mother of God came from heaven to console three very poor children.

St. Mary parish in Fontana is progressing nicely in the construction of a new church that will meet the needs of this growing faith community. This month, exterior framing and completion of the roof are expected along with landscaping and site upgrades.

The new 18,000 square foot church will seat 1,200 people and allow the existing warehouse to be modified into a parish hall and 10 rooms for ministry meetings and catechism classes.

In October 2022, St. Mary’s kicked off the construction process with a groundbreaking ceremony with Bishop Alberto Rojas and about 200 members of the parish community.
