This week many Catholic news sites are commenting on the report that former Speaker Nancy Pelosi has appealed to the Vatican to reverse the edict of San Francisco’s Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone barring her from receiving Communion. This commentary is entirely based on a story posted by the National Catholic Reporter, running under the headline: “Nancy Pelosi’s Communion ban to be resolved by Vatican.”

Before we all plunge too deeply into how the Vatican might resolve the case, let me hit the brakes. We don’t know that the Vatican has the case. The Reporter is convinced that Pelosi has filed a canonical appeal. But we don’t know that. The story, as it appears on the Reporter site, does not justify the headline.

Noose tightens on nuns in Nicaragua
'It doesn’t matter if they’re foreign or nationals, they must leave'

Officials from the Ortega regime had a meeting two months ago with the superiors of religious congregations in the country, in which they were told that residency permits would not be renewed for foreign priests and sisters once they expired, local sources told The Pillar.

“They also said that those who insisted on renewing their permits would be charged more than usual for the process and still be denied, so that they should not even bother,” a source close to the bishops’ conference told The Pillar.

L. A. Children’s famous trans doctor sued
Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy fast-tracked 14-year-old's puberty blockers, hormones, double mastectomy

A doctor celebrated as “America’s best-known practitioner of youth gender medicine” is being sued for medical negligence by a former patient — a young girl who underwent a gender transition and now feels she was deeply betrayed.

Twenty-year-old Kaya Clementine Breen accuses Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy of fast-tracking her attempted gender transition, including puberty blockers, hormones, and a double mastectomy, when she was a young teenager.

Her lawyers argue that Olson-Kennedy, the therapist she referred Breen to, the surgeon who removed Breen’s breasts, and other medical professionals are all guilty of medical negligence for rushing Breen through procedures that have deeply and negatively impacted her future.

In a video clip that has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), President-elect Donald Trump vowed to make ending the targeting of parents who express dissenting views at school board meetings a priority of his incoming second administration.

“They called us domestic terrorists, President Trump, for speaking out at school board meetings defending our children,” Moms for Liberty co-foundress Tiffany Justice told the president-elect in the video. She was referring to the outgoing Biden-Harris administration.

Trump replied: “Well, we’ll fix that on the first day, I promise you.”

Facing what he calls the “chilling and frightening reality” of President-elect Donald Trump’s plan for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants in the United States, Cardinal Roger Mahony is encouraging America’s Catholic bishops to raise their voices.

“The pending ominous initiative to round up and deport some eleven million undocumented immigrants across the country is a chilling and frightening reality,” Mahony, the archbishop emeritus of Los Angeles, told Crux, noting the impact deportation policies will have on mixed families in the United States – those where some family members are citizens and others undocumented.

On September 9, 2024, I had the opportunity to speak with Inderjot, a business student at California State University, Bakersfield, outside the Science III building. We delved into the complex and deeply personal topic of the morality of abortion.

🎙️ What do you think about the morality of abortion? 👉 Join the conversation
Inderjot: Based on religion, it’s controversial because all these holy books are tailored to a specific time period. You’re not supposed to update them because it’s the holy scripture and you’re not supposed to touch it.

Seven years ago my spiritual director suggested I read a chapter of the Bible every morning, and I’ve been doing that. Six months ago, however, I finished the Bible (for the third time!) and began reading other things in the morning. I read a spiritual biography of St. John of the Cross, and a commentary on St. John’s Gospel — all good spiritual reading, but there is nothing to compare with the Good Book itself. So last week I opened the large Bible that I keep open on my mantlepiece.

We did not make ourselves, and we do not have to save ourselves. Seven years ago my spiritual director suggested I read a chapter of the Bible every morning, and I’ve been doing that. Six months ago, however, I finished the Bible (for

San Diego State officials tried to quell pro-women’s protests taking place at the college’s volleyball game against San José State University, a team that has made national headlines for including a transgender player on its roster.

Outkick reports that the November 9 game – which San José State lost – drew around 300 spectators, which is three times the typical crowd size. The crowd included pro-women’s sports protestors, who held a “Save Women’s Sports” banner and chanted “No men in women’s sports” during the game, in protest of San José State’s transgender player, Blaire Fleming.

During his 2024 election romp, President-elect Donald Trump won a stunning 46% of the Hispanic and Latino vote, per a national CNN exit poll – posting the best recorded performance among the demographic of any Republican nominee in American history.

According to the same exit poll, Trump won Latino Catholics, a group that in the past has polled as strongly Democratic, by a seven-point margin (53% to 46%) over failed nominee Kamala Harris.

Trump’s historic performance with Hispanics was further bolstered by his winning Latino men by a double-digit margin (55% to 43%) and married Latinos by three points (51% to 48%), also per CNN.

The California Attorney General’s office agreed not to enforce new laws that would have censored the political satire of Babylon Bee and attorney Kelly Chang Rickert, after a federal district court ruled that the law likely violates the First Amendment. The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), representing these plaintiffs, announced that the state’s agreement means both plaintiffs can continue to exercise their First Amendment rights without the looming threat of legal repercussions.
