THE NIGHT BEFORE THE BIG SHOOT
'Twas the night before shooting, throughout the whole set,Not a creature was stirring, not even a pet.
C-stands were hung by the grip truck with care, In hopes that St. Gaffer soon would be there.
The actors, in trailers, slept snug in their beds, While visions of Oscars danced in their heads.
I liad on my furniepad after checking each clip,
I had just closed all my apps and settled down for a quick grip nap.
When out near the trucks there arose such a clatter,I sprang from my pad to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen props Gave a lustre of midday to objects and tops.
When what to my wondering eyes who should appear, But a miniature van, and eight tiny grips near.
With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Gaffer, oh so slick.
More rapid than script changes his coursers they came, He whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now Dolly! Now Slider! Now Pan and Tilt! On Coffee! On Bagels! On, Donuts and Starbucks
To the top of the set! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"
So up to the set-top the coursers they flew With the van full of gear, and St. Gaffer there too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the set roof the prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Gaffer came with a bound.
He was dressed all in denim, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and snow.
A bundle of lights he had flung on his back, He looked like a gaffer just opening his pack.
Oh his eyes how they twinkled!
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And rigged all the lights; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his van, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew to the next double dip, as quick as a missile.
But that night, as he flew out of sight, I heard him exclaim!
"Merry Shooting to all, and to all a good-light!"
