Interview – Cam Wood ahead of next week’s Olympic Games

How does it feel to be on the prestigious Team USA for Paris 2024?

Representing the United States is such a privilege and a huge honor! It’s something I have never taken lightly in my racing career, and to be able to represent the USA at the Olympic Games is so special and something I have dreamed about for so long.

This past weekend, the USA BMX Tour visited one of the oldest tracks in the US, the 1994 World Championships venue at Waterford Oaks, Michigan.

In the Vet Pro class, there was a gentleman’s agreement to race on flat pedals, which was really cool to see. Barry Nobles clinched the win both days, with Jeff Upshaw following closely on Day 1. It was also nice to see Nic Long, who consistently rides with flats, securing 3rd place on Day 1 and 2nd place on Day 2, earning spots on the podium.

Will we see more Vets on flats again? Who knows, but it was definitely a great move for the weekend.

A very nice gentleman I talked to on Instagram wanted to gift ('BMX Weekly') this lovely memory he made of Darwin Griffin. I think one had already been offered to Gork, but I wanted to make sure we can gift this to a real Darwin friend, family member, or fan. Any ideas?

Thanks to Craig Dutton for sharing this one. Epic shot of the Elite quarter finals last week in Rock Hill. Both Cedric Butti & Cam Woods were looking good from the previous day to move on in the program and contend for the rainbow jersey but went down hard after tangling on the first jump.

Let’s hope both made a full recovery and can be both 100% for Paris as they will be factors for medals.

We also just posted a Podcast wrapping up a little more Worlds talk with Tyler Brown from the cancellation of the race to Joris & Alise taking the wins and more. Check it out.

Joris equals Kyle Bennett with 3 Elite / Pro World Titles.

Niek, impressive from lane 8, could not quite get over on Joris but still he’s a boss.

Sylvain comes back from injury and makes his way back to 3rd place on the Podium and I would think stamped his Olympic card. Not shocked - pack and mental game are next level. He’s the man.

Thirty years ago, at the 1994 World Championships in Waterford Oaks, Michigan.

Thunder Danny Nelson on Powerlite and Balance’s Matt Hadan chasing the rainbow jersey. It was close; Hadan made the move exiting the third turn, but maybe he was a little too nice. A young Danny Nelson went on to win, kickstarting him into an outstanding pro career, winning every major title possible at the time in this era, joining a very select few pros who are members of.

Australia’s Anthony Waye looked set for third place, but he ran into the back of Hadan shortly after this shot was taken and went down, leaving Holland’s Wilco Groenendaal to take the final step on the podium.

To watch the top US Pros & Ams come to Europe to race in the World Championships was a treat for all us young fans who had only seen them in magazines during the 80s.

Photo of Eric Carter (16 x Hutch) here at the 1986 IBMXF World Championships in Slough, England, put on a clinic winning both 16 x and 16-17 Cruiser in Slough, both coming from behind wins.

Stuff like this is still talked about today in our circles. It was a big deal and very inspiring for us young UK/European BMX racers to see this, and I'm pretty sure this was a big deal for Eric Carter himself to double at their Worlds and slap a BIG 1 on his plate (he won the year before in Canada also).

Nowadays, the UCI doesn't even recognize them as World Champions but Challenge Class riders, which is pretty crappy.

Let's hope the very negative outcry the UCI have received this week in Rock Hill will have them rethink Am racing at the Worlds and give them the respect they deserve.

History was made at the World Championships yesterday, though perhaps not for the right reasons due to the weather and the cancellation of the race, a very poor decision on the UCI’s part.

That being said, titles and World plates were still awarded based on the three motos.

The Masters race was one race I was looking forward to watching, perhaps one of the deepest Worlds in this class, featuring riders like Nobles, Brown, Young, Strickland, Baier, Romero, Peebles, Sebesta, Upshaw, and the list goes on.

When all was said and done, Maik Baier of Germany, who certainly appeared to be one of the fastest in his motos, claimed the Rainbow jersey for the second time (having also won in 2019).

Maik took four years off after his 2019 win and essentially returned to racing because his four-year-old son wanted to see him race. Tanner Sebesta, competing in his first Masters race, secured the second spot, with last year’s World Champion Barry Nobles finishing third and Australia’s Corey Frieswyk in fourth.

Day 2 at the Rock Hill World Championships brought more of the older cruiser classes chasing World Titles. Up next, the 40-44 class.

This one is like so many of the older cruiser classes, deep with talent and former World Champions looking to repeat. Noteable on the gate line-up was Venezuelan (The Mosquito) Jonathan Suarez (Now on Stay Strong) who already has 3 World titles to his name, including an Elite Cruiser win at the 07 Worlds in Canada, Olympian from 2008, a USA BMX Vet Title, and more South American / Pan American titles than I can possibly count.

The Mosquito Snaps out of the gate in the final and pulls a lead and looks comfortable to take the win and number 4 for his career total. The USA’s Justin Wike and France’s Anthony Paul both World Champions come in for 2nd and 3rd to top off a World Champions Podium sweep.

The 50+ Cruiser World Championship was expected to be a good one, with a line-up of numerous former World Champions from both the past and present, alongside a group of seasoned riders. Simply making it to the main was going to be tough.

Billy Griggs, World Champion from the 80s and early 90s, Daniel Rojas from Chile, last year’s World Champion Jean-renaud Ducos de Lahitte (The Pink Panther), Chris Kennedy, Jim Nelson, and Aussie Carl Mustchin all had problems and didn’t make it in.

As they lined-up at the gate, Dutch Powerhouse Richard Van Zomeren stood out, having effortlessly clinched numerous European and World Titles over the years looking to add another in Rock Hill to his impressive record.

TP Todd Parry was back racing and listening to a Podcast he did last month on the Lane 8 Podcast he did not come back for a participation Trophy and was looking to repeat what he did the last time the Worlds were in Rock Hill.

Joining them in the main event were 50 Plus 20 inch US dominator, Renato Silva, Arizona’s Jason Silva, along with France’s Swann Delmas (90s Smooth French dude) and Yann Gay, who was also the World Champion (45-49) from the previous year.

As the gate slammed down, Yann Gay took an early lead, only for the big Dutchman, Van Zomeren, to overtake him on the second straight and secure yet another World Title. TP found himself in contention but slipped back to 4th place, leaving Jason Silva to secure a solid second, with Argentina’s Gonzalo Bertolini claiming third after looking good throughout the day.

Rock Hill UCI Worlds 45-49 Cruiser. (90s Pros keeping us entertained)

The last time Andy Contes raced in a World Championship final was in 2000 in Argentina in the Elite Cruiser class.

Twenty-four years later, Andy passes former Elite and Masters World Champion Javier Colombo (who was also back) on the line to win the 45-49 Cruiser World Championships in Rock Hill on Sunday, Day 1 of the World Championships. Despite Javier being so close to another World Title, second place is not bad considering he had never raced Cruiser before and had only built his new GT a few days ago.

I have a sneaky feeling these two will go at it again in the 20-inch category later in the week, along with a certain Mr. Cheeseburger, The Mosquito and a few internationals we don’t know about yet.

Podcast Martin Murray -

It’s been a long time coming, this podcast featuring my good friend Martin Murray, who had spent a few weeks in the US for DIRTYFEST and the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey.

We recorded this episode at Robbie Miranda’s house in Huntington Beach while Robbie was hosting a BBQ, so expect a few guests chiming in with questions for Martin during the podcast.

We delved into Martin’s early days in the UK, including his 4th place finish at the Brighton World Championships in 1996 in the Junior category, which kickstarted his pro career alongside his brother Stephen.

Martin shared insights from his time in the US, including his battle with Dylan Clayton for the UK Pro/Elite title, winning the 4x National Series, and landing a Dirt Magazine cover with Steve Peat, who he now works with at Peaty’s.

We also discussed some of the UK teams Martin and Stephen’s family managed over the years, his time at 6th form college with Scott Beaumont, Martin’s win at King of Dirt at the age of 13, trail riding, participation in Red Bull’s Empire of Dirt, retirement from racing, and more about his current role at Peaty’s.

And, of course, we touched on how Martin’s brother Stephen is doing these days since moving back to the UK after his injury almost 20 years ago, and more.

A little World Cup talk from the weekend that was held in Tulsa, OK at the USA BMX headquarters, if you didn’t get to catch any of the action.

With the Worlds rolling into Rock Hill next week it was good to see who’s on it, not just in Tulsa but that can perhaps carry some momentum into Rock Hill and then later into the Paris Olympics later this summer.

Niek Kimmann has been grabbing World Cup and USA BMX National podiums quietly this year. In Tulsa, Niek kind of reminded me of when Maris Strombergs won the Papendal World Cup in 2012 in devastating form from Lane 8 which gave him huge confidence going into defending his Olympic title in London later that year. With 2 wins over the weekend for Niek this could very well have the same effect for him confidence wise.

Winning from the inside both days again may add in even more confidence that he can do it from both sides of the gate and get put in with the favorites for another World Title when the Elites line up at Rock Hill.

Alan Foster Podcast up next.

Alan talks about moving to California, working at a bike shop, living at the POW house, riding Twin Palms, riding for Elf, TNT, Airwalk, Schwinn and Free Agent.

We talk about Alan winning his first AA race at the ABA Del Mar Nationals in San Diego, being in the mid 90s when sponsorships and the industry caught a good wave, with magazines, company cars and plenty of opportunities as a pro rider.

We also talk about training in the 90s, being race-smart and reading the race. Alan talks about transitioning into the business side of the industry with Airwalk while still racing, buying houses and schools and really setting himself up for his post-racing career and being wise with his money.

We talk about current times, riding bikes, traveling, Dirty Fest and much more. Links below.

First up, the Pro-Am Final, all kinds of stuff going down in this one.

Favorite Jason Morris along with Gary Laurent, both flip the gate leaving it to the other Morris in the main and Jason's brother Jacob (pictured sending it earlier in the weekend) to take the win and cash. Danny Waters and Easton Usher both crash-out in podium spots but still have time to get to the finish line with Easton 2nd and Danny getting the 3rd place purse.

It was awesome seeing Javier Colombo and John Whipperman back on their 20s after so many years, battling it out at the State race in the 45-50 class.

Javier's always been quick, but seeing Whipperman still riding' that same level of skill was seriously impressive. I remember watching him ride at Sheep back in the mid-'90s, way ahead of his time in how he rode. Hope they both stick around a bit longer before they hop back on their MTBs.

Oh, and here's a cool nugget: John was actually the very first official Master World Champion, snagging the title in Canada back in 2007 on Redman, and Javier's gearing up to race in the World next month.
