Comet 2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-Atlas) rising above the eastern mountains of San Diego, California. After seeing all the hype and clickbait on the "Comet of the Century", I had to see this visitor myself. Yes, it was visible without equipment. Seeing this giant streak of light across the horizon with the warm colors of the sunrise painting the sky was truly neat. But it really wasn't as impressive as C/Neowise in 2020. Maybe those on the Southern equator were able to witness a more impressive show since it is very low on the horizon for us. Comet-gazers in Chile, for example, were able to easily see the comet in the night sky making it appear even more bright.

Stay tuned for mid-October. There will be another opportunity to see this cosmic visitor right after sunset instead of sunrise! Maybe I'll host some type of event...

Spent the night out in the mountains waiting for a comet to rise above the horizon this morning ☄️ although I did get to see it with the naked-eye, I don’t know if it’s as impressive as the comet we saw back in 2020 (Neowise). The window to see C/2023 Tsuchinshan/Atlas A3 is VERY small because as soon as it rises above the horizon, the sun is also rising making the sky brighter.

Right now the comet is going around the sun and will come out the other side in mid-October. This is when it’ll be easily seen after sunset 🌅

Have you ever seen a comet before?

While I waited for the comet to be visible, I was able to capture a few hours of data on the Pleiades star cluster and the Andromeda Galaxy 🌌 results coming soon this week!

Heart & Soul Nebula ✨🌌

The nebula pair are located in one of my favorite constellations, Cassiopeia! Several cosmic structures are hidden within so make sure to point your telescope here next time. Photons from these clouds of energized gas travel for almost 7,000 years to reach us. Make their trip worth it and catch them! 🔭👀🚀

Captured this the night of Sept. 1st, 2024.

Saturn during the night of August 11th, 2024🔭

A lot of room for improvement but not bad for my 1st attempt this year.

Will try again tonight! 🤞🏽🌌🪐

Make sure to not miss these dates in 2024! 🔭
~September 8th is Saturn's Opposition
~December 7th is Jupiter's Opposition
These are the days when each planet appears brighter and larger to us on Earth. This effect is a result of Earth traveling around the sun once a year and passing by other planets also traveling in their orbits.

Here is a composite of 2 images I created from data collected in the summer of 2022. A telescope with a focal length of 2,500mm was used. To better imagine the scale of what we are looking at, the moon would appear to be around 40 times wider than Jupiter if seen in our night sky!

Stay tuned for the next stargazing event if you're trying to see Saturn, the Milky Way galaxy, the craters on the moon, or a far, far, away galaxy 👽🌌

We are seeing photons that traveled for 7,000 years before they were absorbed by my telescope. The Eagle Nebula and the Pillars of Creation can be easily seen here after only 45 minutes of data collection 🌌🔭

San Diego might not have the clear skies that Arizona, Utah, and Texas have but we do have mountains. Although light pollution still gets in the way, driving my equipment to almost 5,000 feet in elevation really makes a difference when imaging the universe from Mount Laguna 🏔️

Did you know…?
Out of the 24 astronauts that flew to the moon during the Apollo program, 12 flew around the moon and 12 men landed/walked on the moon.

Here are 4 of the 6 landings that had boots on the moon 🌙 🚀 Can you see the footsteps left behind? 🤭

"I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night"

This is a picture captured close to 2am. Although it is way past midnight, the moon was bright enough to illuminate everything! Makes me feel safe when I can see my surroundings. Moonless, dark nights are the ones 💀🌠

Anyways, this is an example of what the Stargazing events will be looking like this spring/summer season!🙏🏼 make sure to share with a friend so you don't miss out on a unique stargazing experience in San Diego county!

Syzygy: The nearly straight-line configuration of 3 celestial bodies or more. On April 8th, this alignment was witnessed from parts of Mexico, USA, and Canada. San Diego was not in the path of totality but the partial Solar Eclipse was still worth observing.

Here we have the moon’s dark silhouette blocking part of the solar disk. Notice how the sun is covered with “tiny” dark sunspots? These relatively colder regions measure about 1 or 2 Earth’s across! Swipe to the 2nd and 3rd image and dive into the surface details of solar convective cells known as granulation ☀️🔥

Captured image by attaching a camera to a 12” Dobsonian telescope
AND a solar filter! Stacked 8 frames into a single file to produce an image with less noise and more details.

**Never point binoculars/lenses/cameras/eyes to the sun without the proper equipment**

Solar Eclipse on April 8th ☀️

Here is the first result of many images I captured during this cosmic event. San Diego only got to see the partial alignment, yet the show was still worth looking up (with solar glasses).

Image has several artifacts/imperfections but like I said, this is the first result. More to come!

The Orion and Horse-head Nebulae 🌌🔭
After visiting Arizona for a few days, I managed to capture data on one of the most easily recognizable constellations in our night sky.
What makes this image more special is the people who joined me at 1am under freezing 25F temperatures for some moral support. This one is dedicated to you all✌🏼

“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known” -Sagan

Let’s begin 2024 with a picture of the California Nebula I was able to capture last week.

I visited the dark forrest by myself at the top of a mountain to capture this image in a quick stargazing session before more clouds and humidity rolled through. I was surprised that a simple 1 hr session (but 2hrs of troubleshooting) was able to bring this much detail. I’m looking forward to this week because I’m going on a road trip to visit the dark skies of Arizona 🌌👌🏽

"Dusty Storms in the Guld of Mexico"

When the weather doesn't cooperate for weeks, I start digging into my old astro-data and practice my editing/processing skills...Sometimes, I like the results and submit them for astro-competitions

I'm aware there's a lot more to learn and perfect but I'm proud of the progress that's been accomplished.

I’m not saying my state is better than yours but, is your state represented in the cosmos? 🤭😜
In honor of the state I have called home my entire life, I want to introduce the California Nebula, NGC1499 🌌 This cloud of cosmic dust and gas resembles the shape of the state of California, USA. It’s glowing red not because of its temperature but because it’s filled with energized hydrogen gas.

Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe and is present everywhere including our water, our bodies, and the core of stars! Which is why, when stars go supernova, they explode all their hydrogen guts out into space creating unique patterns, just like a fireworks show 💥
Humans love to find meaning, shapes, and patterns in the clouds above us, the stars, and in this case cosmic clouds.

When the Orion constellation appears in the night sky, stargazers know winter is upon us!
Here is a quick test on the Orion Nebula, without stars. I was able to remove the stars which helped highlight the nebula’s structure itself…again this is only a quick 30 minute test, with terrible collimation and focus but still good enough to share with my fellow Astronerds🫶🏼

After last week’s stargazing event, I spent the rest of the evening and morning testing the capabilities of my Astro-equipment… here’s what my telescope was seeing around 2am after you left! Maybe next time I’ll host a stargazing party from sunset to sunrise 🤣😜
