Friday History lesson: A cautionary tale... David Eggers was THE California golden child in the early 1980’s. He was as dominant as any amateur surfer ever and, with Rusty Surfboards under his feet, was tagged to be the next Tom Curren. He turned pro at 16 and was on the tour by 17 but had mixed results, endured some major hazing and unfortunately, life spun out of control. He mounted a minor comeback but by the late 1990s David faded from scene. The way he surfed the inside left at Windansea and the slabs at Big Rock is still talked about today in the highest regard. David passed away in November of 2016 of natural causes out at his home by the Salton Sea. He was a beloved early team rider of the Rusty family and is still very missed. RIP Egghead.

Here’s a Friday history lesson about one of our favorite Rusty team rides; Vince De La Pena. was a fixture on the Rusty team and in magazines for the better part of the late 80s and 90s. His surfing was fresh and fast and lent itself to winning a few PSAA contests and grabbing some of the better photos of the era. He made his debut in the Rusty Video “Just Surfing” in the “Next” section along with new talents Aaron Chase, Justin Poston, Scott Blake and Todd Chesser. Join us for our Coronado showing of Rusty Revival at the Double Feature at the Del: Presented by the Jamie O’Brien Surf Experience. A Rusty Grom Team throwback of Mark Healey in Surfer Magazine around 1998.

Mark Healey has always been an amazing waterman and has been fearless since the beginning.

When looking for team riders Rusty has always had a deep appreciation for a well-rounded surfer. Someone who has a deep commitment for the ocean.

With his passion for surfing, fishing, diving, and travel, it truly reflects in our team riders.

When thinking about Mark Healy, a story we saw on Stab Magazine a while back comes to mind.

He spoke about how he gave John John Florence his first gun. Which happened to be a Rusty/Rawson.

Rusty and Pat Rawson have been good friends since about 1981.

Pat has helped out with many Rusty team riders for over 4 decades.
