Like everyone, we have experienced our share of challenges in 2022. Monetizing public service journalism is no easy task. And at the same time, our commitment to bringing you analysis and explanation of the news has never wavered.

Our mantra is: Everything we do is for the reader. That’s you. Every complicated concept we agonize over to simplify in sentence form, every difficult question we ask of a public official, every decision we make—major or micro—is done with you in mind. We’re a public service nonprofit, and you can own a stake in it.

As we continue our end-of-the-year NewsMatch campaign, we humbly ask: Will you support nonprofit news that’s accountable to you?

Give now to invest in news for people, not for profit:

Help us strengthen the democratic process in San Antonio via nonprofit journalism.

Help us kick off our annual NEWSMATCH campaign in person at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at The Dakota East Side Ice House.

Plus, you'll need a drink after this election.

For the third year, the San Antonio Heron has been selected to participate in NewsMatch, a national matching-gift campaign that drives donations to nonprofit newsrooms (like ours!) around the U.S.

This is our largest fundraising event of the year. The money we raise during NewsMatch, which runs through Dec. 31, is crucial to fulfilling our mission heading into 2023.

NewsMatch will match any contribution we receive during this time, whether it’s through our online form, mailed check, or $20 bucks dropped in our collection box at an event such as this one.

Have a drink and some food with current and past Heron contributing journalists, Heron board members, volunteers, and others who continue to help make the Heron a reality.

We’ll also be giving away cool prizes such as H-E-B gift cards, San Antonio Zoo and McNay Art Museum tickets.

Big THANK YOU to The Dakota for $1 OFF DRAFTS (domestics and imports) during the event, and for hosting us.

Our story

The San Antonio Heron is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization, which launched in June 2018. We are dedicated to producing thoroughly-reported and clearly-written stories about the changing San Antonio downtown area. Our goal for every story is to gather all the facts and opinions and present them in an objective way so the reader decides on their own how they feel about the issue.
